Olaulim Backyards is a homestay with a difference. Situated in a small, peaceful Goan village, it’s a perfect get away from the busy coastal area but close enough to combine your stay with a day on the beach. Our three cottages are very rustic, and very exclusive, set in a coconut grove with a beautiful view on a lake. You can laze around the swimming pool or get active on kayaking, bird watching or cycling.

We were going back after five years. We had visited Savio and Pirrko in 2016, but never managed to return since then due to a combination of reasons. I wanted to work from Goa for a couple of weeks and we stayed at Olaulim for 10 days. 2 adults, a 8YO and one Golden Retriever ! The experience was top notch, Savio and Pirrko are just superb hosts. The room was great, the open to air bathroom enabling you to see Crimson backed Sunbirds feeding on nectar as you go about your morning ablutions 😊. We had a great time swimming, kayaking, visiting local restaurants and generally chilling at the in house bar. There is a in house restaurant – and you must try their prawn curries, specially anything with coconut milk. You must also try Savio’s homemade feni, which he whips into a neat cocktail with local spices! Savio and Pirrko know all the best local eating joints, specially the hole in the wall joints that the residents favour. If you want to see the village side of laidback goan life and have really cool conversations with the hosts and other guests, Olaulim is a great place for you. Specially if you have adventurous children and dogs !! We will return, and not in another 5 years !

We chose Olaulim Backyards as our holiday destination after more than six months of grueling work in Delhi, and after ten days there, we left wondering how quick we can get back here again. Full disclosure - we re-booked for October 2021, also thanks to a sale on a flight-booking website. Short points first: 1. We stayed when Pirrko wasn't around, so we've been told by repeat guests/ friends of Savio, and by reading reviews that we've only had 50% of the experience. That 50%, was itself outstanding, with Savio performing the role of CEO/ CFO/ Chef/ Morning Walk-guide/ Bartender/ Concierge, and taking personal care of us. Some examples are - (A) morning messages for personalized walks depending on how tired we were, (B) evening get-togethers with Savio's friends (who would be picked by him based on how we would get along with them), (C)super cocktails made from local Goan produce, (D) making food for my wife (and arranging vegetarian food for me) right from when our flight got delayed at the time of our arrival, to when we would randomly mention pakoras in the rain, to find bajjis made by the lovely lady who helps with breakfast; (E) complaining about how we shouldn't have rented a car at the airport and driven his car around (!); (F) ensuring that our friend who reached Olaulim at a time when we were out, was also adequately fed and entertained. All in all, if Savio is just 50%, we CANNOT imagine what 100% at Olaulim would be like. 2. It was perfect during the pandemic because: A. The rooms are far apart, as are places to chill in the property. One can choose to be physically distanced from another group, as and when required. B. If you think that being in the pool when others have dipped themselves in is not your cup of tea, then there's an entire waterbody right next to the property to go swimming/ kayaking/ paddle boarding in. C. The food area is also open, with cats, a donkey, a pony, and several dogs visiting the place to chill, and spaces between tables are adequate to distance between groups. D. The property itself is cleaned regularly, and persons visiting the cafe next door (for lunch or dinner), are also seated at tables which are distanced. 3. Food - we got delicious and nutritious breakfast everyday, with a daily set of fruits of choice.- jackfruit, mango, bananas, pineapple, papaya, other local fruit that I can't now recall, egg and poi/ bread of choice with fantastic preserves and butter. For lunch, we would do a half hour drive to anjuna/ vagator/ parra to get to our favorite Goa meals (specially since shops would shut around 4pm). Dinner would be food at the lovely cafe next door, or take away, or some of Savio's own lovely wares for dinner. I realize I've gone into such detail because that's really what Savio does- pay attention to detail. If I wrote about all that he did for us, this would be a doctoral thesis. Anyway - this is a must visit, and absolutely must be stayed at when you're in Goa. It allows persons staying here to do anything you want - get a drink from the honesty bar and grab a chair with a lovely book, and an even lovelier view, or spend your day chatting away with other guests or with our dear friend Savio. Note - even though there was no AC, a warm June with moderate showers still saw us need to turn off the fan at night. Well- ventilated fabulous independent rooms, and even better outdoorsy bathrooms will make you wonder why AC?

Situated away from the city (the tourists, crowds, traffic and beaches) and in the lap of nature, Olaulim Backyard makes for the ideal retreat, complete with stunning views and a host of offerings designed to soothe the body, mind and soul. In fact, there’s so much to do right on the property, you may never want to leave, although you should really get out and explore a little, with the Charao Islands and Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (if you're interested in capturing some really pretty birds) practically at your doorstep. Before we get into the specifics of the beautiful property, it would be apt to mention one of the most wonderful set of hosts one can pray to find- Pirko and Savio. While Pirko's caring and affectionate nature will remind you of your mother, Savio's wit and charm will throw you off-balance (girls beware :P). Let's begin with the property now. There’s the Olaulim river for taking a swim and indulging in kayaking (with all the proper safety gear obviously!), an outdoor swimming pool, bicycles to ride in and around the beautiful property, hammocks to settle down and soak in all the bliss! And of course you won't even realise how time will fly once you decide to make yourself friendly with Pirko's 9 four-legged babies- 4 dogs, 2 cats, 1 pony, 1 goat, and 1 donkey (mind you, the donkey is not to be messed with!) All of those calories you’ll be burning means you’ll need some good fuel, and, fortunately, Olaulim Backyards comes through in a big way when it comes to dining (and drinking of course). For breakfasts, you can look forward to the delicacies (prepared by the in-house team) made out of organic and natural ingredients picked up from the property and surrounding areas. The well stocked "Honest Bar" managed by our very own Savio will keep you satiated with a good buzz. A lovely restaurant run by the super efficient Nikita and her team on the property itself will ensure that your cravings for fresh sea food is taken care of. Last and not the least by any count, we will talk about the rooms. The rustic but comfortable cottages will remind you that it is indeed a luxury to sleep peacefully amidst the beautiful natural landscape watching the dark clear star-lit sky experiencing the whiff of the cool breeze every now and then, and listening to the music of the insects. To sum it all, Pirko and Savio have done an absolutely marvelous job in trying to give the ever so busy urban folk a feel of what they are missing out on in their daily hustle and bustle.

Olaulim Backyards is one of a kind. It isn't for the faint-hearted who wish for nothing more than a sunset on the beach when in Goa. Oh no Sir...here you become one with the place. We didn't just stay here for a week, we lived here. We were the pretend owners of Savio's make belief world and it was magical. Imagine having a donkey that eats cigarettes, a flying cat, three goofy dogs and a boat. Which do you put first on this boat? You're next to the river (not sea). You could dip your toes in it, swim in it, or just row row row your boat gently down the stream (that's the best way to experience it in our experience). We kayaked under Savio's watchful eye and I don't even swim! You could also go fishing here. Try your hand at pottery. Or poetry. I did both. There's fresh fruit and fresh fish and fresh bread and a bunch of smiling faces serving it to you. The rooms are spacious and comfortable but the bathrooms is why you really come to stay here. There's antique furniture a hundred year old writing table red floors walls made of laterite and stone and medical waste and lots of little eco friendly things to appreciate but again the bathrooms. There's just something about a hot shower out in the open under the coconut trees that has to be experienced and not explained. The property also has spice and fruit trees and plants and flowers and a good ol' rubber tyre swing. And a pool. There's butterflies in the day and fireflies in the night. The place is straight out of a book.

Words cannot describe just how amazing olaulim backyards is. It is an ideal homestay for families who want to experience the beauty and joy of nature. Located in a lovely village surrounded by palm trees, organic farms and stunning flora and fauna, this is a home away from home. My daughter and I got to bond like never before, and actually got closer on this trip. Pirko and Savio treat you like a family member, and the animals at the farm are a delight! You wake up to the sounds and sights of birds you have probably not seen before. The hornbills and the kingfisher sighting on the kayak plus the riverside sunrise and sunset are a definite bonus. The inland experience of what goa truly has to offer is best witnessed at olaulim. And not to mention farm fresh fruits, veggies, homemade goan delights are not to be missed. If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, and experience the divine bounty that nature has to offer, you must come stay with pirko and Savio. And my personal favourite is the hornbill cottage :) make sure you ask Savio for his evening cocktail mix and smoked mackerel, and if you are really lucky, pirko's banoffie pie is the best I've tasted so far!
