We booked our room with Marriott points, and the room bookable with points is a standard room with a golf course view. We are Platinum members with Marriott and when we checked in, we were told that we had been upgraded to a beach front room on the second floor (Room 209). We couldn’t have been happier with the room assigned to us. We had a beautiful view of the beach, ocean and the hotel grounds. Our room had a large bathroom with a separate shower and tub, separate toilet room, and double sinks. Our room included a large closet with a safe as well as a small refrigerator, coffee machine and coffee. Also included was a very large television and desk area, king size bed and a chair and ottoman. The patio was large with two comfortable chairs and a nice sized table. We received a lovely bottle of champagne from the hotel manager in celebration of my birthday which was very kind and much appreciated. The grounds of the hotel are large and beautifully landscaped. It is a hike from one end of the resort to the other. We didn't mind at all but someone with mobility issues might have a hard time if their room is at the far end of the beach front rooms. The pool was nice and not at all crowded. In fact, it was never difficult to find lounge chairs on the grounds. We valet parked ($30 per day) and the valet workers were very friendly! Check-in was very easy, quick and friendly! On the Big Island, nothing is within walking distance outside of your resort, so you need to get your car and drive wherever you would like to go. We were so pleased to be staying at such a beautiful resort with great dining options during our visit because we didn't want to leave this lovely resort. As Platinum members of Marriott we were given complimentary breakfast buffet each morning in the Manta Restaurant. The staff in Manta was always very friendly and attentive. Floyde was the omelet maker and always greeted us with a smile and warm regards. We also enjoyed the Hau Tree which is the beachfront bar and restaurant. Jacque is a great bartender and made us feel so welcome. We really enjoyed talking with him. In the evening, be sure to check out the manta rays that come out about 7:30 just past the Manta Restaurant. The Mauna Kea is an outstanding resort and we hope to visit again soon!

Our visit to the Mona Kea was a lifelong dream come true. The setting is breathtaking and the staff was wonderful but it was the worst overpriced food I had ever come across at a "luxury" resort. Also the constant shuttle service dropping off guests from the Westin doesn't make for it feeling like an exclusive destination. Why pay high room rates if you can bus in from a cheaper place? $15 per hour to use a boogie board also feels like highway robbery. The $18 drinks are nothing special and filled with corn syrupy fruit juices. The rooms are spacious but the amenities are few and the l'Occitane products contributed to the general mass market luster associated with the Marriott brand. This hotel definitely misses the little touches which were probably cut out by number crunching management. That said the beach is beautiful and the concierge Melanie put together an outstanding itinerary for our family.

We had a most memorable time at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii. It started with our contact with Amy Joy at the Concierge Desk. She is the a epitome of hospitality and the aloha spirit. From my first contact with her before our visit, I became very excited to stay at the hotel. Her kindnesses and thoughtfulness made our stay so special and memorable.

I’d also like to thank Michael Hofstedt for making our private dining experience at the Vista Deck one our family will cherish for a lifetime. If anyone is celebrating a special event, you can trust Michael to plan it for you and create something better than you even envisioned. And the culinary skills of the chefs are outstanding.

Lastly, I’d like to extend a big mahalo to Margarite at the Front Desk, Esther from Housekeeping, Myrna at the Logo Shop & Marlene from The Club. They each touched us with their very special caring. Actually, because of our amazing weeklong stay, we joined The Club to continue our connection with the hotel, their staff, and the beautiful beach with the softest sand and spectacular sunsets.

Lastly, I’d like to mention that I always felt safe from Covid at the hotel. The hotel is built in a magnificent open air design with atriums throughout. There are no enclosed corridors, and outside stairways make taking the elevator unnecessary. Every other umbrella at the pool is closed to insure social distancing. There are hand sanitizer stations all over the hotel and at entries to any stores or restaurants. All the dining facilities have outside seating on terraces or are on the beach. For true Hawaiian hospitality, come to the Mauna Kea.

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is a long-time favorite of our family however on our most recent visit we were disappointed. The location and beach are unparalleled, and the soaring brutalist architecture is as pleasing as ever, but this hotel cannot rest on these attributes alone.

The evening food and beverage service in both Manta and The Copper Bar were abysmal. On one occasion the manager actually told us they were slimming their staff (at 8pm!) so he wanted to be sure to put us in a place we’d get good service. We didn’t. All four evenings were beleaguered by long wait times for lackluster service and greasy food that was not adequately hot. The family joke became “Do we want cold food, or bad service?” Either restaurant would suffice. At the prices charged this is particularly unforgivable.

Housekeeping was timely and efficient in our room, and the front desk and valet stand staff were always welcoming and accommodating, but whoever is in charge of F&B should be replaced, or forced to eat dinner in house.

This is one of the best beaches in the world and we have stayed at the Maura Kea hotel many times over the years. This trip, as well as a week in March, has forced us to find other accommodations on the Big Island. It is sad. The hotel was crowded the first week we were there. Housekeeping was only every other day (every third day in March!) We were told this was due to COVID. I can see reducing staff if there are fewer guests but you should always have proper staff to provide daily housekeeping. The hotel looks to be dirty and in disrepair. Dirty elevators (when working) and a toilet at the beach that was out of service for the entire two weeks we were there are examples of the problems but there were many more. The chair situation at the beach has been pointed out in other reviews but suffice to say if you didn't get up early and put a towel down you didn’t get a chair on the beach. Since the Beach is their biggest asset you would think they would try to make the experience perfect. In addition to the fight for chairs, we found there were cleanliness issues as well. Straws, cups, and old lemon garnish pieces were often seen in the sand. The chairs were left out overnight and were stained with bird droppings and spilled food.

The hotel staff was friendly and accommodating for the most part. The manager seemed "put out" when we asked to speak to her. I overheard her speaking to another guest about an issue and her tone was not what it should have been for good customer relations. Even when you cannot satisfy a customer request you can show empathy and find some way to help the customer come away with a positive feeling about your efforts or solution.

Many of the hotels in the area were half the price ( we paid $1,100+ per night) and were much cleaner and although the Maura Kea beach is second to none in the world, if you have to fight for a chair it takes the fun away!

Hopefully, Marriott will upgrade this property soon. The beach is a jewel.

Just do not stay in this property spend your money elsewhere there’s alot of resort out there.

First, once I arrived the valet/bell guy gave me
An attitude because my baggage was heavy to carry and no one was there to greet us.

I stayed two weeks and this property staff doesn’t greet customers no aloha no hello whatsoever. Unbelievable that with this price and rank people so unpleasant no hospitality.

This property GM need to get Reprimanded not doing his job.

Second, room was full of mold and dust. AC filter was just nothing but dust and mold with some rust on it my respiratory system got compromised and later week found out it was because of the AC filter.

Towels has blood stains on and door was broken bathroom has molds..

Third, housekeeping maids was nice and pleasant however every time I order something like towels and ice the male housekeeping people doesn’t even answer when I say thank you

Don’t get me wrong some staff were nice but almost 98% of staff was unpleasant to deal with and there’s no hello no aloha unless you greet them first.

Restaurant: manta was ridiculous price is high which is whatever but the service and food was not match to the price especially service is like just regular restaurant no high end they do not know how to serve as fancy restaurant..

Just go to Tommy bahama at least their bread is eatable and fantastic..

I paid $20k and this place was joke..

Breakfast: no buffet ridiculous options and quality

We love the big island and have stayed for at least a week three times at the Mauna Kea.

Our last visit was June 2019, and it wasn’t a good one. We decided to go back to the big Island in April 2020 and try a different hotel. Since we have a very late flight home I booked a room online for one night using Marriott points so we wouldn’t have to kill 12 hours from checkout to departure. I thought we would give the Mauna Kea a mini trip, stay there that last day and leave the same evening.

So after I made the reservation I sent a copy to the concierge at the hotel. I explained that we would appreciate early check in. This seemed like a reasonable request.

It isn’t hard to answer an email...takes a minute. I did not receive a response, so I cancelled and made arrangements for a very late checkout that is guaranteed at the hotel we will be staying for a week.

Frankly I could say it is disappointing not getting a response, but honestly it didn’t surprise me. We have watched this hotel slip over the 4 years we have been going there. It is a shame, but Marriott needs to step up their game and have specific requirements for their employees.

So folks, the beach is beautiful without a doubt, but don’t expect anything as simple as a polite response to a simple request. Aloha.

Despite a number of complaints, I gave this resort 5 stars due to the stunning location. The beach is fantastic. I could hear the surf from my bed at night and we had a perfect time each day on the beach. The waves are fun without being dangerous and the sand is smooth and soft. We even snorkeled with Manta Rays at night from the hotel which was amazing. My complaint is that service overall had a very distant, impersonal feel. The exception to this was housekeeping and check in/check out. Otherwise, it did not seem like anyone cared. There were no beach attendants, restaurant staff did not really care (except for the beach hut) and I never received a call back from the Keiki club when I left a message regarding possibly sending my child there. I received no help from the concierge either on this. When I walked by the cultural room, the lady there did not want to get up from her seat to talk to me and told me to check on my phone by using the QR code- this was annoying. We could not get into Manta or Copper for dinner as they were either fully booked or closed. I would have had to make a reservation over a week in advance and put down a hold of $50 pp. Since I was on vacation, i was not sure if we would want to eat at 6pm on a wednesday , 3 weeks prior so I did not make a reservation and we could not get in anywhere at the last minute. We wound up eating at the beach hut and it was better than the reviews suggested. Service was good too. I liked the free laundry facility = that was super helpful. My biggest complaint was the beach lounge chair situation. Usually, you go to the beach when you are ready, the attendant helps you find a spot and that is it. Here it is self serve and people get up at the crack of dawn to claim a seat. There is a large space reserved for club members which often had availability but hotel guests could not sit there. It was frustrating to set my alarm to claim a seat that I was not going to be using for hours. On my first day, we did not reserve and got there at 10= there were no towels and no lounge chairs. By our last day, my husband was going down at 6am and all of the front rows were claimed which was frustrating as we had young kids and would have liked to be able to see them play. A lot of people have the same rights to a lounge chair as hotel guests- westin, condo/villa renters who pay a daily fee, etc. I would like to see preference given to hotel guests. I was not asked once for my room number. I don't like the policy of having people claim a chair for the day that they are not using. I did not want to participate myself but the hotel's policy makes this the only option if you want a chair. Mauna Kea needs to revist this = if they did , the hotel would have been perfect.

The hotel is a leisurely 40-minute drive from Kona airport. Check-in was concise, and the agent explained my benefits as a Bonvoy elite member. The welcome leis were a nice touch as well. We were upgraded to the Beachfront wing, which was appreciated since the location was quiet, and the walk to the beach only took a few minutes. The Kauna'oa beach was just breathtakingly beautiful. The waves were mild, the water perfect, and the area was never crowded. There were plenty of lounge chairs, and I did not have a problem securing front seats every day we were there. The on-site laundry at the Beachfront wing is a plus, as it was nice to wash those sandy swimwear after each dip. Copper Bar was the best restaurant in the property, and the food was delectable. Service was friendly, with a proactive attitude, and the staff always greeted us whenever we walked around the hotel. There are plenty of other luxury hotels in the area, but we will be back at the Mauna Kea, if ever we return to the Big Island.

We stayed as a family of 3 for the week of the 4th of July. Things have vastly improved since our stay last year. All elevators were functioning, more staff were on site, and the whole place really came back to life.

You’ll have a hard time finding a nicer beach anywhere in Hawaii. Waves are usually minimal, and the water is clear, warm, and calm. Beach chairs and umbrellas are included for no fee, as are SUPs, kayaks, and snorkel gear. There’s also no “resort fee”. However parking is $30 per night. There’s a laundromat on site which offers free washing and drying and even includes free detergent. So it’s an expensive place, but you don’t get nickel and dimed here.

Granted, it was a holiday week, but I was somewhat surprised by how aggressive chair-saving was at the beach. The entire front row was typically reserved by 7 am, and there was a day when no chairs were available by 9am. Something to be aware of.

The hotel has a timeless elegance, and is a true architectural work of art. Amazing views can be had from about anywhere on the property. Photos don’t do justice.

The room was luxurious and comfortable, and best of all perhaps was the large balcony with a view to the ocean, complete with plush reclining chairs.

We ate at Manta, Copper Bar, Hau Tree, and. No. 3. Food overall is pretty good, but is not going to compete favorably with the many excellent eateries around the island. Still, for convenience we are most meals here and we were happy with the food and service.

Overall what has to be understood is that the hotel is, true to its name, oriented around the beach and the beautiful outdoor surroundings. It compliments its setting perfectly in an unobtrusive way. You don’t come here to be ensconced In modernity, or to be waited on, hand and foot. It’s instead a classy, laidback, peaceful vibe here, and we absolutely loved it. Where else can you go swim a short distance from your hotel’s beach to snorkel with a manta ray before retiring to your quarters?
