I booked the resort for our 26th wedding anniversary using my Bonvoy Titanium Elite Points for a standard golf view room. Using my Suite night rewards the resort upgraded us to a deluxe golf view. The room was great with an amazing bathroom comfortable bed and walk in closet. The balconies were enjoyed as well. We enjoyed the "Big Island TV" channel to see what there is to do around the resort and island. My wife and I don't tend to spend alot of time staring at the view from our room so the beach view isn't that important to us. The restaurants at the resort were great. We enjoyed the breakfast at Manta. My wife liked the continental breakfast and I upgraded to the full buffet as I'm more of an eggs and bacon guy. We had a nice dinner at the beach restaurant one night. For our anniversary night we had dinner at Manta and it was amazing. Our server even comped desert because it was our anniversary. Two must dos at the resort is the snorkeling with the Manta Rays and the Luau on site. The Manta Ray snorkeling was probably the highlight of the trip. You are so close to them sometimes they bump into you! The Luau is a great show and the food was delicious. The beach was great and the water was very clear. We ended up snorkeling every time we went. The reef was full of fish to observe. The beach staff was great and all the gear to snorkel, paddle board, surf is included with your stay. It did seem that some guests tried to hog the umbrellas and chairs. It looked like there were alot of towels on chairs that weren't being used. Even with that we never had a problem finding a set of chairs to use. Even though you need to pay for parking I recommend having a car so that you can go out and explore the area, lunch, shopping, etc. We had a great time exploring the island and seeing the area. Housekeeping was great and kept the room in great shape. Overall I would highly recommend this resort to anyone coming to the big island! Thanks Mauna Kea for a wonderful anniversary vacation!…
We stayed as a family of 3 for the week of the 4th of July. Things have vastly improved since our stay last year. All elevators were functioning, more staff were on site, and the whole place really came back to life. You’ll have a hard time finding a nicer beach anywhere in Hawaii. Waves are usually minimal, and the water is clear, warm, and calm. Beach chairs and umbrellas are included for no fee, as are SUPs, kayaks, and snorkel gear. There’s also no “resort fee”. However parking is $30 per night. There’s a laundromat on site which offers free washing and drying and even includes free detergent. So it’s an expensive place, but you don’t get nickel and dimed here. Granted, it was a holiday week, but I was somewhat surprised by how aggressive chair-saving was at the beach. The entire front row was typically reserved by 7 am, and there was a day when no chairs were available by 9am. Something to be aware of. The hotel has a timeless elegance, and is a true architectural work of art. Amazing views can be had from about anywhere on the property. Photos don’t do justice. The room was luxurious and comfortable, and best of all perhaps was the large balcony with a view to the ocean, complete with plush reclining chairs. We ate at Manta, Copper Bar, Hau Tree, and. No. 3. Food overall is pretty good, but is not going to compete favorably with the many excellent eateries around the island. Still, for convenience we are most meals here and we were happy with the food and service. Overall what has to be understood is that the hotel is, true to its name, oriented around the beach and the beautiful outdoor surroundings. It compliments its setting perfectly in an unobtrusive way. You don’t come here to be ensconced In modernity, or to be waited on, hand and foot. It’s instead a classy, laidback, peaceful vibe here, and we absolutely loved it. Where else can you go swim a short distance from your hotel’s beach to snorkel with a manta ray before retiring to your quarters?…
The photos are incredible. We had such a lovely experience. Thank you so much Cynthia and Karly! They were so accommodating for our large group. We will cherish these. Highly recommend them and Pacific Dream
Mauna Kea has a unique location which is a great place to relax and enjoy the beach and grounds. Families return here for generations. The umbrellas can get crowded on the beach, but that is a minor drawback from an overall excellent experience.
We had an awesome experience with Cynthia at Pacific Dream! We had 117 amazing photos and Cynthia is all over everything. We would highly recommend anybody who visits here give this a shot. One of the best parts of Mauna Kea! 5 stars!! Loved it!
Had a great time with, Carly commemorating our trip. She made it fun and we love the photos! We got our photos taken while we were visiting and had a great time. The beach and property are absolutely beautiful here and we had a great time. Would definitely recommend for a family looking to relax and enjoy the beach.
Mauna Kea hotel was wonderful! A perfect relaxing vacation. We did pictures with Pacific Dream Photography. They were wonderful to work with and we highly recommend them. Cynthia was our photographer and really knew how to naturally capture our teenage kids. Karly was so patient and helpful selecting our photos at the picture preview. You can’t go wrong with the hotel or pacific dream photography!
Cynthia did a great job taking a family photo session. We have a two years old and she knew how to get our son attention and get him to smile for the pictures. Karly took her time reviewing the pictures with us and allowed us to take our time. We recommend PDH, Cynthia and Karly at Mauna Kea Hotel.
We’re still here and pretty disappointed by the entire experience. My family used to come here a long time ago and pretty much every except the beach has devolved into a rather run down experience. The food is bland, the employees seem disinterested, and the property is desperately in need of a major renovation. The grounds are not well kept. None of these issues would be worthy of complaint, but paying $15k for a trip warrants better. The luau uses plastic cups and ran out of food within 35 minutes. If your read this, do not book here. Go to the Mauna Lani. At least the place is updated and the staff are professional. It’s so sad to see a beautiful property fall into shambles.
I was a bit concerned that the Mauna Kea would feel dated after so many years but still an incredibly lovely hotel on an amazing bay. Views and the beach are the tops! We were upgraded to an awesome spacious suite and we couldn’t have been happier with our stay. The staff was extraordinary and the service friendly and attentive.
