Nestled in a prime spot that garners accolades for its convenience and breathtaking vistas, the Fairmont Orchid is a popular choice for travelers seeking nearby shopping, beaches, and activities. While the rooms are celebrated for their cleanliness and amenities, some guests have encountered issues with maintenance and noise. The hotel’s cleanliness and manicured grounds are well-regarded, although a few visitors suggest it could benefit from minor enhancements. Patrons often find the pricing steep, feeling that the cost does not fully align with the value received, particularly regarding food and room views.
Despite this, the service at the Fairmont Orchid is frequently commended for its warmth and professionalism. The hotel's amenities, including the pool and dining options, are generally met with praise, yet there are mentions of needed improvements in upkeep and service promptness. Guests are charmed by the serene and inviting atmosphere, which is occasionally marred by dated elements and sound disturbances.

We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for a week, it was absolutely wonderful! The minute we walked into the lobby, we knew we were someplace special. It is a beautiful resort! We were greeted with leis, and every staff person we encountered was friendly and very service oriented. We had booked an ocean view room and because our room was more of a golf course view, Joey, at the front desk was very helpful in finding us another room that had a gorgeous view of the beach, pool, and lush landscape and waterfall right outside our lanai. It was spectacular!
The pool is large and there is a portion sectioned off for adults. They have towels that fit over the back of the chairs, as well as, towels for drying off. There are showers, bathrooms and RO water stations conveniently located throughout the property. The whole property is very clean. A little past the pool there is a lagoon where they have everything you could want for water fun! We really enjoyed snorkeling there and found a variety of fish and turtles near the rock edges in as little as 3 feet of water.
You don’t have to leave the property if you don’t want to as there are places to eat throughout the resort. We ate at Brown’s Deli for breakfast everyday (split a breakfast sandwich, fruit bowl and something sweet.). The coffee there is excellent! We ate dinner 3 nights at Hale Kai and enjoyed all our meals there as we watched the sunset. We did want to get out for dinner a few other nights and highly recommend Merriman’s in Wailea. It was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. Also the food at Tommy Bahama’s 7 minutes down the road was excellent. In the same shopping center, there is a little market to get any incidentals you may need.
The only suggestions I can think of for the resort would be to put more umbrellas by the adult part of the pool and replace the carpetings in the rooms with LVP. Because of the black lava rock in the sand there, the carpeting is hard to keep clean despite the housekeeping staff servicing the rooms twice a day. Those are small issues though, and we couldn’t have been happier with our stay. We will be back!!

Spent 4 nights at the Fairmont Orchid; this was my first visit but had been to the Kea Lani prior and loved it, so wanted to check out the Orchid. Greeted at the door and shown where to self-park my car. Escorted up to the Gold lounge for check-in which was quick and easy. Juliana at the Gold lounge gave me an orientation to the resort, brief tour of the lounge, and walked me to my room. Was excited to have gotten an upgrade to an ocean view room. Room: plenty of space, very clean. Housekeeping was timely and excellent, addressed me by name, did usual cleaning and offered turndown service. Nice view from the 6th floor of the ocean and adjacent golf course, lanai with table + 2 chairs + lounge chair with small side table. Room furniture is a little dated and scuffed, but I believe they have a refresh planned soon. Chiller was nice to store drinks, and 2 nice refillable water bottles provided with water stations everywhere. Towels, sheets, Le Labo toiletries were all great! Lounge: the Gold floor lounge was excellent for breakfast/evening canapes and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks available all day (alcohol paid honor bar if you want). The team was excellent and kept everything well-stocked, gave us a 10-min "last call" before packing up the food, and kept the dessert trays out until the lounge closed. More than enough food, but also enough variety for our 4 day stay. Lounge balconies with nice view of water and sunset if you don't want to go down to the oceanfront. Grounds/Pool: Grounds were lovingly maintained and gorgeous. Pool was large and sometimes busy, but I was always able to get a chair. Easy towel service available. Plenty of other places to sit including for sunset. Short paved path that you can walk by the water, but know that it is just along the Orchid grounds - no paved connection to other resorts, but you can bushwhack a bit in the sand. There is a small cove and beach, but know that it is mostly for snorkeling - only a few feet of sandy area in the water followed by reefs that you should not walk on. It's protected cove so very few waves if that is what you are looking for, but amazing for snorkeling. Service: everyone was wonderful and kind. Did self-parking so did not use the valet. Self-park is about a 3 min walk and convenient in and out and included in the resort fee. I did not try any of the other restaurants given access to the Gold lounge. Random other nice amenity - complimentary washer/dryer and detergent. I did a load of laundry which was very helpful on a weeklong trip to 2 islands. Overall: I would definitely return. Fairmont service is top notch and the convenience of the gold floor was well-worth the extra investment. Very excited to visit again!

This is a lovely, well-located resort, and every member of the staff that we interacted with was gracious and friendly. The rooms were clean, but perhaps a little tired around the edges. When there was an issue with the toilet in the room, the front desk was very responsive, and sent a tray of sweets and apology card the next day. The housekeeping staff went out of their way with special touches, and left notes to show appreciation for a tip. My only criticism for this resort would be the food offerings. The room service menu and hours were pretty limited, and on the one night that we did order it, it was incredibly expensive and simply not good (I also thought it was a little odd that they didn’t bring iced water or even glasses with the meals). For us, the restaurants just fell short. The menus were really standard, and felt like a missed opportunity to showcase Hawaii’s healthy, fresh food. The breakfast buffet was really expensive and nothing special. We ended up getting a lot of meals at the beach deli, and the food there was just a step above airport food. We traveled offsite to find better places to eat, and liked Tommy Bahamas, which was a 20 minute walk away, and Obisic for shaved ice. Overall, a solid place to stay. But if this Fairmont revamped the food situation it would be hard to beat.

I have enjoyed all of my stays at Accor hotels in multiple countries. I also had extraordinary experiences staying at Fairmont properties in the past and I reached Gold Member Accor status so I chose to stay at the Fairmont Orchid in Waimea, Hawaii for my honeymoon trip at the end of November 2024. I hoped for the advertised 5 star experience for this special trip, which I received with the breakfast buffet at the Orchid Court. Aside from that, the stay fell below expectations.
First, I inquired about early check-in when I arrived at around 2 PM. The front desk staff seemed tired and rushed and just said that they will notify me when the room was available. I waited until past 4 PM (standard check-in time) but I still did not hear from them so I went to the front desk to ask about the room. They informed me that the room had been ready for awhile but they forgot to notify me. This was disappointing because I arrived from an early long flight and hoped to be able to rest in the room. I tried to shrug it off because I did not want a negative start to my stay.
However, when I walked towards the room, I noticed that the wallpaper in the hallway was stripped and scuffed. Inside the room, metal hardware in the bathroom was rusted, the bathroom fixtures and decor were dated, cobwebs were in all corners of the drawers and shelves, and table and counter tops were sticky. There were minimal amenities in the room-- not even room slippers were available to wear when walking over the dusty floors. Moreover, very few guest activities were complimentary, e.g., the s'mores making kit cost $25 (this was complimentary at the Autograph Collection, Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu in Kauai as of July of this year).
I don't usually write reviews but I realized how far this stay fell below 5 star standards when I arrived at the Marriott Vacation Club in Waikiki for the second leg of my honeymoon trip. Even though that hotel is marketed as 2 stars, every single staff member was friendly and welcoming and entire property was modern and spotless with plenty of amenities in the rooms and complimentary activities for guests. I regretted not booking my whole honeymoon trip there or even at a 3 or 4 star Hilton property in the Waikoloa Village just a few miles away from the Fairmont Orchid where I can make use of my Hilton Diamond Member status benefits and pay only a third of the price of the Fairmont Orchid. I hope that my feedback will initiate improvements at this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback and for choosing us for such a special occasion as your honeymoon. We sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations and fell short of the high standards we aim to provide. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the breakfast buffet at Orchid Court, but we regret that other aspects of your stay did not reflect the five-star experience we strive for. Your comments about the delay in your room readiness, as well as the condition of the accommodations and amenities, are concerning. Rest assured, we will review your feedback with our team to address these issues, including the attentiveness at check-in, room cleanliness, and the presentation of our hallways. We also appreciate your insights regarding the availability of complimentary activities and the comparison with other properties. While we aim to offer unique and enriching guest experiences, your feedback is invaluable in helping us understand where improvements are needed to provide better value and service. Our family just enjoyed a fantastic wedding week at the five-star Fairmont Orchid Hotel, and it exceeded all our expectations! We hosted around 90 guests for the three-day event, with most staying for at least five nights.
I want to extend a special thank you to Celeste Tremblay, the Director of Catering and Conference Services. Her detailed communication and expertise throughout the planning process as well as during the three day event were instrumental in making our events run smoothly despite a hurricane bearing down on us. We had a Welcome Luau on Friday evening at Coconut Grove; the Wedding Ceremony at Turtle Pointe, a Cocktail Reception at the Tennis Pavilion, and the Wedding Reception at The Plantation under a beautifully lit tent on Saturday; and a Post Brunch in the Paniolo Lounge on Sunday morning. Chef Jesse and the kitchen team, along with the service staff led by Diamond, worked tirelessly to ensure everything was perfect. As requested, the hot food was cooked perfectly and served hot, and the champagne was ice cold!
Now, about the hotel itself: every staff member, from the valet to the front desk to housekeeping, was incredibly friendly and professional, making our guests feel welcome. The rooms were world-class, with most recently renovated, and I understand the remaining rooms will be updated by the end of September or early October. The addition of refrigerated drawers in each room is a fantastic new perk! The lobby and many public areas have also been renovated, with new artwork on the way.
Regarding dining options, it’s wonderful that there are three different restaurants available in the evening, catering to various price ranges and offering diverse menus. I have posted more detailed reviews on two of them.
Ultimately, we are thrilled that we chose the Fairmont Orchid Hotel for our son and daughter-in-law's wedding. They could have selected any venue on the island, but they chose this hotel for its exceptional offerings, and they were not disappointed!

Arriving on property the reception staff were very courteous and helpful. The room was clean but had an odd setup. The room came with a shower and a regular tub and shower head. Most resorts have a large or jacuzzi style tub and an adjoining shower. Not the Fairmont. The grounds crew, bartenders and maids were very nice. However, it seems the maintenance folks were not cut from the same cloth. One of our sinks in the room was clogged. I noted it to the maid who said she had seen it too an had contacted maintenance. We were there Friday, through Tuesday, but the clog still remained. Additionally, one of the elevators was out of commission on arrival at the south tower and it too was still inoperable when we checked out. Another minor note was that the beach yoga instructor never arrived for class. Nor did any other classes take place. The food was good, but I did feel we were paying resort prices as a Mai Tai was $24 and hamburger was available for a mere $26. We went to other restaurants on Kona and Mai Tai's ranged from $13-$17.50 So much more expensive. Overall, I gave the resort a 3-star rating. Of the nearby resorts Marriott, Hilton and Fairmont...I enjoyed the Marriott the most.

We went over the Christmas holiday. Overall we really enjoyed our trip - was very good but not perfect.
Pros: beautiful property, gorgeous landscaping, kept very clean, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, great pool, fun extra activities on property. The young guys who ran the activities were terrific (kudos to the two guys at beach shack, and the main bartender). Hotel left everyone little gift bags on Christmas, which was a really nice touch. Easy parking, great location near shopping and many restaurants. Attracts nice family oriented clientele. Great service at pool. Epic sunsets, free bike and snorkel rentals, swimming with turtles!! Small private beach completely swimmable regardless of tide level. (Note for those comparing properties: Fairmont has more pool and less beach than neighboring hotel Mauna Lani. But the Fairmont beach was big enough for the number of guests.)
Cons: The room. We stayed in north tower section (2000s). Two elevators, one out of service during busiest week of the year = annoyingly long waits (we were there a full week and it was out the whole time). Room had significant drawbacks. There were no drawers for clothes! Hanging space only. Terrible design: the dresser in the room has one drawer occupied by Nespresso and electric kettle, another drawer taken up entirely by coffee capsules and tea, another for wineglasses and another for dishes and ice bucket. These have built-in sections so you really can't take the stuff out and use them for clothes. In the middle is a refrigerator (that was very useful). Literally the entire dresser was used for things that could have easily gone on the top. As a result, for a family spending a week in a room, with nowhere to put underwear, socks, pjs, bathing suits etc. things got messy quickly and we were constantly looking for things. Bathroom: nowhere to hang towels; needs overall updating.
Food: On-site deli and cafe food overpriced and mediocre at best. We utilized the nearby supermarket heavily for breakfast and lunch (which is why the room fridge very useful). Food at nearby Mauna Lani is also expensive, but much better quality.
Small complaint: There was zero lighting in the stairs on the path behind our room. Totally dark section of the path. (This is the path behind north tower, not far from the tennis courts.) We used our phones to walk the dark stretch when we walked down to the pool/ lawn area at night, but for elderly people it could be dangerous.
All in all I enjoyed the stay very much but for what we paid I think next time I would try another resort or rental where I can unpack our undies and socks! It sounds trivial but with kids it becomes yet another obstacle to getting out the door when you can't find what you need.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your recent stay with us over the Christmas holiday. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed many aspects of your visit, including our beautiful property, attentive service, festive touches, and the abundance of activities, especially the private beach and snorkeling with turtles. It’s wonderful to know that the efforts of our team members, including the beach crew and bartender, helped make your stay memorable. We sincerely appreciate your honest feedback about your room experience. We understand how important functionality is, especially for families during a weeklong stay. Your comments about the lack of clothing storage, towel hooks, and the elevator outage during a peak period are noted and will be shared with our team for review. In fact, we are currently evaluating ways to add more storage options in our guest rooms to ensure a more comfortable stay for our guests. We’re also sorry to hear the dining options didn’t fully meet your expectations. While we strive to provide excellent offerings, we recognize there’s room for growth and will share your feedback with our culinary team. The mention of the unlit path behind the north tower is an important safety concern, and we’ll ensure this area is reviewed and addressed to improve nighttime visibility. Thank you again for sharing both the highlights and challenges of your stay. We’re glad you enjoyed many aspects of your visit but regret that some areas fell short of your expectations. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience. With warm aloha, Barbie Nakamura Director of Quality

This was our second visit to the Fairmont. Our last stay was in 2018, and we had been thinking about returning ever since. This time, we upgraded to the north building, which offered a stunning view of the water (and the glorious evening sunsets), and we booked a rate that included breakfast each morning. Both were excellent decisions. The rooms appeared to have been updated since our last visit. I would describe the décor as laid-back luxury with an island influence. The accommodations were well-equipped with everything one might need. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, the bathrooms were spacious, and the furnishings included a small sofa with an ottoman, along with another comfortable chair. The one odd thing is that the hotel doesn’t have Netflix or anything similar on their entertainment system they have movies on demand instead. That seemed very 90s. One of the Fairmont’s greatest assets is its staff. Everyone we encountered was friendly and consistently went out of their way to be helpful. We dined at nearly all of the on-site restaurants. While none were truly exceptional, the food was good, and we enjoyed each experience. A couple of times, we rented beach beds, which made for the perfect beach day. One tip: when renting snorkels and masks at the beach (the first hour is complimentary), they offer masks with corrective lenses—an excellent option for those who wear glasses, as it makes it easier to see the beautiful fish. Lastly, I must mention the stunning gardens and grounds, which contribute to the hotel's wonderful atmosphere. We look forward to returning in the future.

Fairmont Orchid was beautiful! The food at Hale Kai was really good (went back for Lobster Fried Rice Twice and the Chicken sandwich was wonderful) and Brown’s was even better. The breakfast buffet was super good with tons of variety and replenished right up to closing of breakfast hour. The location and views took our breath away. The only constructive criticism we can offer is that the room furniture needs some repair and updating. Loved the large tub and separate shower in the room as well as the spacious balconies! We went in a shoulder season last week of July with Backroads and lounge chairs (even in shade) were available through mid-morning. Our favorite activity was renting snorkel equipment from the beach shack-the variety and abundance of fish was incredible. A very special shout out to Momi at the front desk. At check in she went above and beyond to make sure our two rooms were allocated properly and when we were faced with a very late flight Momi took care of arranging things so that we could enjoy our last day instead of worrying about how to shower at 7pm after a day in the sun.

We had 3 rooms at the Fairmont Orchid towards the end of December. 2 rooms were Garden View and one was Ocean view. We did have a sideway view of the ocean which was beautiful. The rooms are very large and clean, and all of our 3 rooms had balconies. The bathroom is also very spacious; the toilet has a separate door and there is a separate shower and a separate tub with a shower head so 2 people can shower at the same time. The service was very good but not excellent. Breakfast options are buffet or a "deli" where one can pick up coffee and ready to go sandwiches. We tried the Brown Beach House restaurant for a fancy dinner--the view is breathtaking but not the food! The walking pathway both directions is stunning. We ended up walking to the Auberge and having lunch there twice.

Thank you for sharing such a detailed review of your recent stay. We’re delighted to hear that your group enjoyed the spacious and clean rooms, the stunning views, and the convenience of the balconies in all three rooms. The comfort of our guests is our top priority, and we’re so glad the layout of the bathrooms and other amenities contributed to your positive experience. It’s wonderful to know that the scenic walking paths and the beauty of the Kohala Coast left a lasting impression. Exploring the surrounding area is such a special way to connect with the natural beauty of Hawaii. I appreciate your honest feedback regarding our dining options and service. While I’m thrilled you enjoyed the breathtaking views at Brown’s Beach House, I regret that the food did not meet your expectations. Your comments are valuable, and I’ll be sharing them with our culinary team to ensure we continually strive for excellence. We’re grateful for your thoughtful review and hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and your group back in the future for an even more memorable stay. With warm aloha, Barbie Nakamura Director of Quality

I guess they don't provide umbrella but fronting the pool has a lot of shade but it gets crowded 12nn onwards but if your early you can get a sun chairs. Too hot though advise to please always put sunblock. Fronting the beach also has chairs but no shade though. There's a rental fee for sun chair with shade.
I can confirm the rooms have Nespresso coffee makers; we are big coffee drinkers and asked for extra pods which housekeeping delivered. I do not recall seeing a kettle; however the concierge may be able to provide one.
Don’t know if you can eat vegan. We only had the brunch breakfast at the resort. By the way, best place we have ever stayed. Superb facilities and service. No one else comes close in our experience. Caution, you will definitely need a car if you plan on going anywhere besides the resort.
There are more places to choose from in the Puako area.
