Detailed Reviews
Overnight stay during our Southern Upland Way walk. Humid, damp, cold, somber rooms. Not very friendly owner. Evening dinner had to be at this place, because no alternatives in the village : meager meal for 15 GBP.

The standard of accommodation we have experienced over the past 2 months+ in the UK has been excellent but ,alas, this establishment wasn't one of them.
Our room and adjacent bathroom were dark and damp. Our evening meal ( provided because sole local pub closed on Mondays and we were on foot and couldn't go further afield to seek sustenance) was pleasant but overpriced and breakfast was basic.
Aforementioned hotel would seem to be a preferable option.

Arrived cold and wet to be met by an equally cold welcome. Room was damp and heated by a radiant heater which had just been switched on. Although the house has central heating the radiators were stone cold. No heating in shower room which was bitterly cold. We had to drape our clothes over various waste paper bins and dry them using the oscillating heater! Although porridge is on the breakfast menu it wasn't available and the only sandwich choice was cheese. Every other accommodation on the route offered more in terms of comfort, choice and hospitality. We compared notes with others doing the SUW and they all had a similar experience! Not a good advert for Scottish hospitality.

The photos online of the property do not match reality. They look bright but it is very dark. Main bedroom looks into a wall. Long corridor with little light. The so called courtyard is actually the parking area. The furniture is traditional, dark and old fashioned though perfectly usable. One armchair totally worn out. Bedroom doors only shut using a Yale key. Property also cold in August. . Laundry was in main bathroom with no heating. Would have paid extra £35 for extra heating if rest had been up to standard. Web site stated TV in every room. A lie. Only 1 in the tiny sitting room with only 3 able to view comfortably. Also stated Wi-fi. NO Wii=fi. Could not possibly recommend.

Lovely cottage situated in the village of New Luce
Cottage has two double bedrooms, one with a four poster double bed, the other a double bed, both of these bedrooms have a freesat TV, plus a twin bedroom
All bedrooms are spacious.
There is a small sitting room with freesat TV, and has two chairs and a sofa.
There is a large dining room/kitchen, looking out onto fields and forest
Wildlife everywhere, red deer, roe deer, red squirrel, grey squirrel, dozens of different birds (forgot my bird book) and night sky is not "light polluted" so stars on clear nights are beautiful.
Owners are very nice and helpful, and locals are very friendly
Will definitely be back and will recommend to all

We booked this as we needed some last minute accommodation in the area and this had the dates we needed. When I read the reviews my heart sank. Anyway we arrived and I went armed with air fresheners etc.
What we found- when we arrived Peter the owner met us and showed us around - he was very welcoming and informative. Yes there was a fusty smell so we opened all windows and doors and made some judicial spraying of air freshener. By the time we had settled in it was pretty much gone and remained so by simply opening windows and doors each day. The accommodation was much larger than we expected and the owners had thought of everything. The welcome pack including biscuits milk, flowers and a lovely card was very much appreciated. Yes the snug is that - however I simply rearranged the furniture and it was perfectly comfortable. The bedrooms were clean comfortable and welcoming. The large bathroom also housed a washing machine and separate dryer with everything provided. The area was beautiful and we had a good visit. The owners garden was available to us to use as we wished and was lovely, the WiFi was perfectly usable and adequate even for us all using devices.
We would certainly return and I am sure that the owners by airing out the accommodation between lets and perhaps checking for any signs of damp could address what is really the only aspect letting the accommodation down a little.

Positives first -comfortable beds, a welcome pack with biscuits and milk, basics such as toilet roll, washing up liquid, dish cloths and laundry pods provided, knowledgeable owner with lots of information about surrounding area, well placed to explore Dumfries and Galloway and southern Ayrshire. Wifi worked well.
Cons - when first entering we were met with a smell of damp fustiness, although the place didn’t feel damp. This smell clung to everything. Everything we brought home smelt and had to be washed - even things that hadn’t left the cases.
It was cold, the halogen heaters were woefully inadequate at heating the spaces they were in. The extra heaters made it more bearable, but still not really warm and we were asked to turn the heating off when going to bed and going out. With no timer this meant that when we got up or came in from a day out we had to wait for the rooms to warm up. The halogen heater was enough to warm the lounge, as the room was so small. The only t.v was was in here and also tiny, only 2 people were able to sit in a position to watch it at a time. The hallways between living room, bedrooms and kitchen weren’t heated at all, so whenever you left a room it was cold. The kitchen diner was well equipped and bright, but also took ages to warm up. We were told we were able to go outside, but only to walk the narrow path around the building - no mention of the advertised garden visited by red squirrels and many birds. We were able to see this garden only from a bedroom window. The owner did ask us at one point if it was warm, we said it was ok as he’d made it clear on arrival, when we asked about the central heating, that further heating was out of the question as he wasn’t prepared to pay extortionate electricity bills.

I was brought up "if you cannot say anything nice - say nothing at all", therefore, the only positives of this cottage is that they have red squirrels in the garden but unfortunately we did not stay long enough to photograph them. There was a large bottle of milk in the fridge (again we didn't stay long enough to use it) and flowers from the garden in a vase on the kitchen table. No sign of bread and biscuits as mentioned by other reviewers and the shower gel etc. appeared to be left behind by other visitors. The layout of the cottage was somewhat confusing and I would say that the review left by Herman-Patricia is a good one and mirrors my thoughts exactly - even though they might have stayed in the house rather than the cottage.
