Property's Favourite Review
A wonderful estate property and fantastic staff from the owner down. Food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. When I realised I had given my daughter my wife’s passport, she being 200km away, the staff swung into action and sent a member of staff to swap them back. Above and far beyond…
This place is so much more than a home stay. You become part of the place for a few days. Perfect for a quiet getaway as part of your Kerala trip. Some lovely walks around the estate if you’re feeling like a gentle stroll.

Vanilla County is a great place to spend a couple of nights in rural Kerala - it was one of the highlights of our trip to Kerala. It is located in the lower Western Ghats not far from Kochi – a nice break on the way to or from Thekkady or Munnar. This homestay has several rooms in the main heritage (70 year old) house – renovated but keeping with the traditional style – plus a couple more located a minute walk away across their garden. (We stayed in one of the two rooms on the top floor of the heritage house – both were very nice.) The owners, Baby Mathew and Rani, are gracious hosts, very easy to talk with and to hear of their lives and the history of their home.
Vanilla County is located in a less touristed part of the Ghats, surrounded by rubber trees, various spice trees and plants, and nature. We took the long walk (3-4 km?) along a small dirt road up to a small nearby village, and then were picked up to go another couple km to an isolated rock pool for swimming. We were also taken about 25 minutes away to a high hilltop with a small Hindu temple (which you cannot visit) and a church, to watch the sun set.
Meals were quite good and we ate in their outside courtyard – a great place to meet with a fellow travelers. They do not have an alcohol license, but if you bring wine or beer you can drink it with your meal.

Vanilla County was outstanding in every way from the moment we contacted them for availability till we waved them goodbye!
Booking and asking questions was very easy via WhatsApp. Their business account on WhatsApp allows you to browse the catalogue on the App and check out the different room options. Mathew was super helpful in providing good clarity on multiple questions I had and so responsive. For non Indians being able to interact via WhatsApp makes things very easy, since there is no requirement to have an India phone or have cellular coverage. He also coordinated our pick up from Kottayam railway station via Siby, the taxi guy.
From the moment we arrived at Vanilla County, Maju, the manager, coordinated all our activities. Maju was excellent, always with a smile on his face and a can-do attitude! We also got to meet Mr. Baby Mathew and his lovely wife, Rani. Everyone was so friendly and warm, felt like we were visiting family and friends!
The food at Vanilla County was excellent! Again home like feel, but resort like presentation and service. Amazing variety for both vegetarians and meat lovers!
The room we stayed was in the main bungalow on the upper floor. The room was clean and well provisioned. The bathroom was very clean and fitted with modern amenities.
Location wise, Vanilla County is about 13 km / 8 miles from Vagamon proper, which suited us perfectly since we were away from the usual tourist crowds. Took long walks on the road that runs through the coffee and rubber plantation all the way to the village. Really lovely place for a 3 day weekend trip!

We felt so welcomed from the moment we arrived, this is a superbly maintained homestead with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Baby Matthew and Rani are such gracious hosts, with a truly wonderful team who made our stay the highlight of our travels.
The trips to the rock pools were a firm favourite with the kids(and adults alike), and it was wonderful to walk through learning about the plantations, spices and various fruits grown in the area, incredible to see so much in such a relatively small area!
The food was superb, we were spoilt for choice and all beautifully prepared meals with a great variety to our groups varying tastes.
I genuinely will be looking to return one day, and highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break away in a beautiful setting with wonderful hosts.

I felt proud about my selection after the 2 nights stay at Vanilla County. We wished to have a couple of days away from busy schedules, noisy roads and polluted surroundings. Vanilla County was the best choice.
We could walk thru comparatively untouched soil and water streams. Cool, Calm atmosphere, birds, butterflies, variety of plants and Kannilthulli brought out the kids in us. I will never forget her gorgeous smile in satisfaction when I applied kannilthulli in her eyes.
Quality and variety of food served for every meal was exemplary. Some of them brought childhood memories.
Hospitality of team Vanilla County, especially Maju and Sojan was really amazing. Response for each of our needs was the Malayalam word "Pinnentha", means "Why not".
We wish them good in everything and wish to go back when possible.
Anyone who loves nature, we recommend Vanilla County.

For the 4th time I have come to this marvelous destination, now under the management of the new generation of Mathew and Silu. They have taken the place to a new level bringing together foreign and domestic tourists in the warm hospitality of the vintage plantation bungalow, offering amma Rani’s excellent Kerala home foods with all local organic products. In house program including plantation walk, jungle and rock pool bath. Jeep safari and toddy shop visit are complementary. Rooms are spacious, ornately furnished with homemade mahogany and teak furniture and flooring. Terrace and balcony give a wonderful view of the wide variety of plants and birds. Staff is very diligent and eager to please. The hosts are so warmhearted and sincere that you won’t want to leave. A paradise for families including kids and grandparents, couples and single travellers seeking good company.
We can’t wait to be back - see you next time!

From kumily to teekoy on a wonderful minibus drivin by saji, through tea plantations, terraced plantations and the most obscure places for a supermarket., We arrived at vanilla county. How to describe beyond wow. A bungalow built by baby Mathew father at one end of his plantation, surrounded by rubber trees, palms, jackfruit, pineapple and an immense array of spices and tree nuts. The property lends itself to relaxation, veranda for coffee courtyards for breakfast and dinner with lunch around the long table out of the heat. Well appointed bedrooms with ensuite. We had 3 parents and 7 kids between as all under 12 and the hosts gave us so much freedom and choice of activities. A home away from home
And the food, sensational Kerala focused delights. If you visit anywhere in Kerala and especially Teekoy stay here. Birdsong for the morning wake-up the odd mooing cow and rockpools for swimming. Paradise, Thank you.

What a wonderful relaxing few days spent up in the hills away from the bustling city of Cochin. We saw lots of exotic herbs and spices growing, witnessed the latex being collected from the rubber trees, sampled the 'palm toddy' at the local toddy shop. Ate marvellous home cooked food , swam in a couple of beautiful natural pools and generally had the most relaxing few days after being on the go for a solid month of sightseeing trips throughout India.
Highly recommended!!

Vanilla County hosted my family from Spain and my now husband family. We were around 20 people. They took care of every single detail, made us feel at home, hosted us as family, and helped us to explore the beauty of the surroundings. Every meal was a feast. They treated us with such a warmth and care. It was an unforgettable experience we will cherish for the rest of our lives!

Baby Mathew, his wife Rani and assistant Maju made our stay here truly memorable. The food is the best we have tasted in South India - quite a feat.
The warmth of their hospitality meant that nothing was too much trouble. Trip to an ATM. Trip to the Toddy Shop (hic!). Trip to the barber, the rockpool, coffee factory, sunset walk in rubber plantation etc.
Rooms are gorgeously authentic with mahogany floors and antique furniture.
We cannot recommend Vanilla County highly enough.
Many, many thanks
