There is always something special about visiting Matjiesfontien, and while the history and character of the town lends its own "flavor" to the experience, the setting in the Karoo adds to an always memorable stay.

Unforgettable experience. We have stopped at the coffee house multiple times during transits. The apple tart was always a favourite but the quality of it seems to have lowered and was very commercial on this last visit. The rooms were very clean and quite comfortable. The absence of a fridge was very regrettable. We loved the twin baths but one...

Thank you very much for your review and for the detailed feedback on your stay. I had a talk with our chef about the apple tart and to look at the recipe from scratch. Glad you enjoyed the rest of your stay and experienced a lovely overall service from our staff. We look forward to your next visit in Matjiesfontein....

We stayed in the Olive Schreiner Cottage which was so quaint we even had people trying to explore it thinking it was part of the museum! The whole village is a big museum. There is a great audio walking tour you can download to your phone which, using GPS, takes you round with some fun historical facts. The transport museum...

Dear Valerie, Thank you very much for a lovely review and looks like you had an awesome time with us. I would like to establish a bit more about your shower of your room, as we did not pick that up during your stay. If you would be so kind as to email me directly at werners@lordmilnerhotel.co.za . Old hotels where time passes slowly behind heavy curtains. Love them. Friendly, unofficious staff and a resident cat are important too, and an oasis of a garden. The latest in luxury is not to be found here; what there is to experience will hopefully be unchanged a quarter of a century from now.

Dear Mark, Thank you very much for your review and glad you enjoyed your stay with us. I am glad to say that we aim to have Matjiesfontein to stay the same and keep its old world charm. We felt the dinner was not up to standard. However we will definately return for another visit. We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. The gardens were very neat and tidy and the swimming pool was pristine. We really enjoyed the transport museum and thoroughly enjoyed the bus ride and singsong in the pub.

Wonderful isolated location in the Karoo. Fantastic garden and grounds. Old Victorian buildings have been renovated in the last few years, looking much better than some years ago. Quiet and peaceful..

Excellent. Enjoy being welcomed by Ingrid and Cindy. Of course Gert is a super star! Karoo lamb a favorite and sing along with Johnny is special. You should consider having a VIP list of guests who have been coming to Hotel for many, many years and who knew the old chap who owned it for some may years. This place...

This little town is smaller than my high school and looks like something out of a Clint Eastwood movie. The hotel is cute like a cat, worth admiring but I wouldn't advise lingering around. There is really nothing to do there, the hotel has no entertainment fascilities, and it's too close to Cape Town to be a stopover on a...

We have always enjoyed our stay at Matjiesfontein and would highly recommend to anyone. Accommodation, food and general experience has left us with great memories. We enjoy the quietude, stepping back in history, visiting the museums and making new discoveries with every visit. This oasis in the middle of the Karoo is something to behold - Thank you!

Food needs serious attention, more home-made fresh produce is needed, also you cannot serve the cheapest shop bought meat and advertise and charge it as high quality karoo lamb. The local gardens are beautifully kept, perhaps its time to introduce a veggie garden and serve your future guests food from the garden? Incredible bar but the barman needs to cheer...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
