The Monsal Head Hotel is situated at the peak of the Monsal dale. The hotel itself is steeped in history whilst the Stables bar which has stood the test of time for over 200 years still holds the quirky values today as it did then. Offering a fine selection of beers supplied by local micro breweries. Food is of the highest offering with everything from light bites to hearty meals with an enphasis on good quality local produce all made on the premises.

We stayed for a long weekend recently. The staff were all very friendly and helpful except for one (which I’ll come back to). Some general disappointments though::- we were told on arrival that the restaurant and lounge was closed and that meals would be served in the Stables Bar next door (presumably due to Covid). I think this should be mentioned when booking, not on arrival, as the roaring fire advertised and small lounge area and big dining room was one of the reasons we chose the place. The stables bar was ok but closed at 10pm and was empty well before that and had 80’s pop music on constantly.Even when the restaurant is normally open it seems odd to have a huge restaurant AND a big breakfast room - so two dining rooms, but nowhere really for guests to sit and relax. We spent all our time before and after walks and all evening after dinner just in our room as a result. Which was disappointing. I’d suggest that one of the dining rooms could be a lovely guests lounge wjth coffee facilities or something. I also just have to mention the one member of staff who was rude and really ruined one evening for us. Having walked over to the stables bar where we had booked a table for dinner, upon waiting outside before entering, he came marching over and was completely unnecessarily antagonistic in demanding we put on masks before entering (which we were about to do anyway) and register using the NHS app. His manner was atrocious after which he went back over to people he was talking to and apologised to them as if he’d had to deal with some badly behaved small children. I was completely wound up and shocked at his attitude Later that evening, when we had finished our meal and got up to leave the bar to walk the two yards from our table to the door. (We haven’t been out during Covid apart from this holiday so were not massively familiar wjth the regs) he yelled ‘ er, excuse me can you put your mask on please’ in a really aggressive tone making us feel really embarrassed, which was presumably his intention. I was absolutely fuming all evening after that and having looked at other reviews on here and on the stables bar itself (which is listed as a separate venue) I can see that we are not alone. Have a word ! ? I’m sure all the other staff know exactly who I’m talking about - everyone else was lovely and I’d like to thank them for all the effort they made to make us feel welcome and looked after. Shame the one guy lets you down

Have just returned from a very pleasant stay at the monsal head hotel. The decor is a little dated in places but our rooms were newly decorated to a good standard and the view from our room was fabulous.Thank you to all the friendly staff and a special thanks to Kevin who looked outside for us when we had trouble finding it .Food at breakfast and in the evening was very good and the stables bar is very interesting to be in.I would have felt a little more relaxed had the staff been wearing face masks but i understand the guidance has now been changed and the wearing of masks is mandatory in hospitality settings.

Perfect place to stay, area very picturesque some of the rooms in the Hotel Are slightly dated, but didn’t deter from wanting to return again. Bar menu fairly reasonable but the special dinner menu we felt was perhaps a bit expensive @ 19.95

Visited hotel/pub whilst on our travels spoke to lady as wanted to use bathroom before our walk then come back to eat. She was lovely but busy so bumped into Gentlemen asked him the same thing and he was rude and made me feel awful on our first holiday to the peaks! Just wanted to make people aware!
