This was a break I was looking for and this place made it more than vacation for me. One of the greatest attractions of the Back woods Camp is the incredible diversity of birds, including endemics of the Western Ghats and migratory one like the Indian Pitta right near the camp kitchen. Rest assured, if you are a birder, you are going to be one happy camper and if you are not a birder then answer here is enjoying the wilderness as it is, thick and unpenetrable perhaps in vision, but thrumming with full of life The smaller life-forms abound here, with a multitude of species of spiders, dragonflies, damselflies, and over 15 species of butterflies and moths. The reptile and amphibian diversity here needs further documentation, but there can be no question that the area is a potential hotspot for the same. Back woods Camp greatest strengths is the incredible location. The proof is in the roaming herds of deers, curious wild boar that might surprise with their close approach, the absolutely stunning variety of birdlife which would make you question whether you should leave the camp at all for birding also nocturnal visitors including the Sri Lanka frogmouth and predators indicated by the nightly alarm calls. Combination of flash light along with bundle of luck, may help you spot the spotted feline form too. All of this within the grounds of backwoods camp. As I winded my way back.. I was full of gratitude for my enthusiastic bird mentor at the camp Loven. His passion and patience towards birding is amazing. He is one who can identify birds just by their flights and can sight those which are so well camoflauged. This fellow has contagious passion which he has passed on to his caretaker Sandeep. Thank you for making my stay safe & wonderful and as a birder for making my hands full by helping me spot more than 75 species.

We had an excellent stay at Backwoods Camp. Saw a large variety of birds far beyond what we had imagined we would see. Loven is excellent in finding birds and in focussing on them in a jiffy. Would highly recommend for any birder and nature lover.

We spent 5 nights at Backwoods Camp in early February 2019 as part of a 6 week trip to North and South Goa. It is difficult to do this excellent place justice in this review and we can only thoroughly recommend that people go and experience it for themselves. If you are interested in birdwatching, nature, wildlife and spending quality time in the amazing jungle setting, you won’t be disappointed! We stayed in a room in the main building which was great. We cannot fault the hospitality of Sandeep who looked after us so well, always with a smile and time to talk, and the daily provision each evening of the bucket of hot water for showering was always very welcome! The food was delicious and plentiful, cooked outside by 2 lovely local girls who always were friendly and helpful, although sadly we cannot remember their names. As for Loven the main bird guide - well, what can we say? We learnt he has been at the camp for around 20 years since it opened and he has lost none of his passion and enthusiasm for sharing his expert knowledge with birders. We were taken on 3 guided birdwatching walks each day and learnt so much from Loven and saw a huge array of different species in a variety of habitats. He really is a tremendous guide and is friendly, patient and trustworthy with a great sense of humour! The whole Backwoods experience was a something that we’ll always treasure and we are so grateful to have discovered this very special place. We had only one criticism - that is, we had to leave! We would however, not hesitate in returning. ,

Recently returned from 3 weeks in India and one of our highlights was our short stay at Backwoods. Fairly basic amenities, but very clean and efficient. Pramod took us birding on all our trips and although he wasn't able to find us an Indian Pitta, we saw a good deal of other birds including a pair of Frogmouths. Full marks to the kitchen staff too for the lovely food. Sandheep who served us so nicely was also a keen bird enthusiast and 'guardian' of the resident Frogmouths. Highly recommended.

We’ve never been but birding before so it was a whole new experience. No internet or phone signal, just surrounded by nature. I was totally out with f my depth especially as the other guests were experienced bird watchers, but I needn’t have worries, Lovem took us out and opened our eyes to a whole new whole. I found myself living in the here and now, not even considering tomorrow, the birds were stunning and so fun when you spotted something special. We loved our time there and especially Lovem and Sandeep, thank you so much for opening our eyes to a whole new experience. I’m now really enjoying the birds in our garden!

How can I possible describe the 3 days that I have just enjoyed at Backwoods Camp? The place is fantastic, superb, amazing but even those words hardly do it justice. I went there to do a little bird watching, not only were my bird watching needs thoroughly met, Loven possibly the best guide I have ever came across, but the place itself was situated in a most wonderful tranquil place. I so much enjoyed being at Backwoods Camp itself, the different mammals that visited the camp, the different birds that visited the camp. The guided walks were fantastic, Loven bird knowledge and patient in showing them was truly outstanding. My only negative was that I had to leave. Birder or non birder, simply go!

We’ve just had a brilliant time at Backwoods Camp. From the minute Loven picked us up from our hotel in Panjim, we were struck by how friendly and relaxed everyone at the camp is. Loven is incredibly knowledgable - what he doesn’t know about birds isn’t worth knowing - and how he finds them hidden from any other human eye is beyond belief! We saw 74 types of birds - and we were there in low season - and seeing them through the telescope and binoculars is just such a thrill. If you’re interested in birds and like to spot, or you’ve never looked for a bird in your life but are keen and interested, you must go: Backwoods is a delightful experience and one we won’t forget. The food is also fantastic. Thanks for an amazing time, Loven, and to your colleagues too. We hope to be back!

My wife and I made a very last minute decision to go to Backwoods and were collected from the Panjim Inn by Gaja. Although we are very amateur bird watchers with rudimentary equipment we saw over 70 birds knew to us. Loven and Pramod were very patient with us. They have amazing memories for birds both visually and in terms of their calls. The accommodation with hot bucket showers suited us and the food was excellent. We had 3 weeks in India and our 3 days at Backwoods was one of the highlights. Strongly recommended!

Backwoods camp is truly a camp, with a great guide and three nature walks a day. The camp employs local people and the house is built with natural materials only: you can see the woodpecker marks in the wooden windows. My sister and I enjoyed the exotic birds and the tranquil life of the local village people: they use elephant turds to expel mosquitos and all kinds of religious decorations to expel bad luck from their houses. A journey back in time that I enjoyed very much. The absence of WiFi and the not so soft matress is part of the camp experience I suppose. Openminded India at its best.
