We simply drove in having had to beat a hasty retreat from where we had been booked in. No matter. Colonel JP welcomed us with a firm handshake and soft smile. 'Show them the rooms,' he said with pride, and as we found out, for a work of love and labour of one family, he has plenty to be proud of. The rooms are in a row, each with a porch, in a single storey building set in the middle of a garden. Each one has distinctive interiors, even distinctive 'personalities'. And each one is immaculate and with that one thing i like - attention to detail. Even so it is the hosts' hospitality that makes this gem shine; making the meals to our taste and sharing them with us around a bonfire along with a favourite from his cellar, making sure the kid does not go hungry and is tucked into bed, inviting us into his residence for morning tea. When we leave, the colonel asks us to stay in touch. We will.

What a wonderful place to spend a week! The room was very comfortable and clean, the bathroom and shower room too!We had our own little place to sit outside and spot the different bird life. The Col and his wife Pratibha where very attentive and looked after us very well.We also loved their little dog 'Dash' and of course Frisky too, along with the two horse's! (who needs a lawn mower!)The food and choice was very good and we loved the Col.'s tea, the service and staff were excellent. The area is great for site seeing especialy going up to Billing where the para- gliders where, what a view! 8000 feet up and it took 45 minuets to get to the top!.We had a really wonderful time there and would not hesitate to go back.

Colonel (JP) and Pratibha are the most amazing hosts I have been with. Colonel resort is a home away from home at Bir, a place you would fall in love with. The staff certainly know their business and are so welcoming. If you are looking for pure relaxation and detoxification, Colonel resort is it.

I think anyone looking for a quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of the city should visit this resort. It's a place for people of all age groups. Paragliding, trekking, ecotourism, and meditation... you will find it all here and Colonel and Pratibha are the best people to help you explore the place.

A beautiful location - I would love to be here every year. I stayed here for 4 nights, and I thought I was in heaven. The gardens and rooms are beautiful. Food, especially the desserts, was delicious and cooked to perfection.

We went to Bir on recommendation from close friends, they had praised it so much that it was impossible to resist it, and usually such stories end in anti climax but we returned with memories of one of the best holiday we have ever had. And this was all thanks to JP and his lovely wife who run the colonel's resort.
With an army man running the show the resort works with clockwork efficiency, you never have to ask for anything the staff is thoughtful, efficient and friendly. Colonel (JP) and his wife Pratibha treat you like their personal guest. Making sure you are comfortable and well taken care of. (They will surprise you with spl meal of your preference without you specifically asking for it)
Your day will start with JP guiding you on morning walks to the nearby forest, villages and valleys. His family has been part of Bir's history for more than 400 years and he has a different route to take and a different story to tell everyday. It is good that that you start your day with some exercise because the food is so delicious that you are bound to over eat, they grow all the vegetables in their organic farm so you want to make the most of this health treat.
For animal lovers their are enough four legged friends on the resort - Frisky (adorable labrador and JP's co guide on morning walk), Simba the royal guard, gorgeous horses Namta and Chun Chun they all make the resort feels like a beautiful farmhouse.
During the day one can go for Paragliding (Bir is supposed to be one of the top 3 paragliding sites in the world), a trip to Tibetan monasteries or just walk around the village.
Colonel's resort is a place where you will meet a lot of interesting ppl from all over the world and JP & Pratibha will ensure you get to know them better over evening bonfire.
We would recommend this place to everyone and I can assure you its the kind of place you would always go back again and again.

We were having a terrific holiday, having spent time in Chateau Garli, Dharamshala and Palampur. Decided to spend a day in Bir at Colonel’s Resort on a friend’s recommendation.
Booked on phone. 7500 a day per Superior room. Two rooms
On arrival find there is nothing superior or deluxe about rooms. These are terribly kept like army barracks. Beds are makeshift which creak and are ready to fall apart. Bare furniture. Dirty bathrooms with insects
Toiletries picked up from footpath. No hand towels. Terrible with zero care for basic hygiene
We were told food order has been placed as per colonel’s choice. Ripped apart when we got the bill for these home meals. A Paneer dish at Rs 650 - what do they feel- they are running an Oberoi property?
Next day it’s raining heavily. But we start getting phone calls at 9 am- when are you checking out? After three calls were practically forced to leave in heavy rain.
No sign of host.
The only good feel we had was the son- he was polite and helpfully guided us.
At 7500 per night it’s a terrible experience.
One feels fleeced and it seems the management has devil may care attitude.
A blip on perfect holiday we are continuing in Manali and now Zanskar.

The location of Colonels Resort, Bir Billing, nestled in the foothills of the Dauladhar mountains is picture perfect. The buildings, dining room, meadow with horses, walkways blend into the landscape. This is off season in February but it’s a beautiful time- mist rolling in, chill, a bonfire begging to be lit! The rooms are snug and welcoming, the food is delicious and Col JP and his family are excellent hosts. Walking trails, para sailing, monasteries- you never want to leave!

Lovely sprawling property in the midst of nature. Obviously a labour of love by Colonel and his family. While it is has all the comforts of a resort, it also the caring personal touch of the owners. We spent a wonderful 2 days there, especially memorable evenings around the bonfire. Special mention and thank you to the Colonel for his concern and reassurance during our journey from Manali as our son taken taken ill on the way!

After booking more than 1 month in advance and also paying 50% of our stay in advance we arrived from a long car journey with our family to be told we were not booked in and also rudely told that we had not paid! After insisting from our side that we had in fact paid and proving this from the bank statement they told us they were full and we could not stay! Very disappointed and it ruined our trip to Bir! Would not recommended to anyone to stay here! Very rude staff!

At Bir we stayed at Colonel's Resort. It had been highly recommended by friends who had stayed there. And it did not disappoint. The resort is in the Bir Billing Road and is tucked away from the road. There are both rooms and cottages. We took the two rooms on the first floor which had lovely bay windows which trapped the warmth of the sun and gave a spectacular view of the sunrise. The hospitality of the Colonel and his wife is warm and very generous. His wife personally supervises the meals which are delicious as many of the vegetables are sourced fresh from their own fields. Its an ideal spot to spend one 's time in Bir as it is walking distance to the market and is on the way to the take off spot for paragliding. You can sit on the rolling lawns drinking endless cups of tea (made from ea from their tea gardens) and lazily watch as the paragliders lift off from the mountain in front.Bir is a lovely, quiet place with excellent Tibetan monasteries to visit.A stay at The Colonel's Resort makes it perfect!

We booked 4 deluxe rooms from 27-29 May 16. We arrived at the location on 27 May 16 at about 1500hrs after a long drive. Had to tell them especially for lunch as it was not catered for nor does the website give any details. Other than one room the balance 3 rooms were not even ready, so had to wait which I brought to the notice of thee owner. Then on 29 May 16 the owner requested us to vacate early as he had other bookings. Imagine....most unprofessional attitude. It is not actually a resort but a family property being run like a resort. Not happy with their attitude. And we paid Rs 4000/- per room per day.

The best and the most comfortable way to reach here is by flight. There are a large  number of over night trains from Delhi to Pathankot and then a taxi (3hrs) to Bir. There is a Volvo Bus service from ISBT to Baijnath (11 Kms from Bir). Room rates are between INR 3000 - 4000 + taxes with meals & drinks on actual basis. Sightseeing is arranged with many Buddhist Monastries to visit including Dharamshala & McLeodganj ( Dalai Lama's residence ) 2 hours drive .
