Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the first floor in the building adjacent to Colonel's residence.
The service was also great with fixed buffet meals (no ala-carte). Now this is one thing I was not aware of when I made the reservation, nor was I informed of this by the staff till I inquired myself after checking in. The limited buffet menu had one non veg dish and 3 veg dishes with roti and rice. The food was fresh and tasty for sure. You can carry your own alcohol and consume on the property even around the bonfire in the evening/night.
Paragliding was organised by the Resort staff itself. The Colonel and his wife who manage the Resort were on a vacation at the time and their son was overlooking operations.
Just one thing that we did not appreciate. On the first night when we sat right outside the restaurant around the bonfire, we asked the server if there were any snacks that we could order. He suggested a few things including Chilly Chicken which was already on the buffet menu. It was odd to order a snack and pay for it separately when the same thing is already on the buffet for which we are in any case going to pay. Though we did order a starter that night, we thought of just eating a snack of the buffet the next night, only to be told that the son of the Colonel had instructed the servers that no food will exit the restaurant area, not even 3 steps out near the bonfire. This was a little weird considering the fact that we have no other option in the night in a place like Bir to eat outside the property and so we are going to pay for the buffet anyway. Then how does it matter if we consume our food inside the restaurant or on a chair 3 steps outside of it. Not like we were loading our plates and taking the food to our room.
Apart from this little thing that left a dent in our experience, the place is a must visit for a super comfortable stay at Bir!
Pros- Good location, decent rooms ( there are different types of rooms). wi-fi is good!
Con- key ones to highlight
1. The food options are strictly okay. The dinner buffet is not great . the bad part is it shuts at 9:30 pm ... but even worse the food get's over by earlier!!! So there is a need for demand management . I don't see a reason why they cannot manage it well. The breakfast spread was strictly okay bordering towards poor! And when we raise the issue it is not really well accepted by the owners. No Apology given , just a cold shoulder... along with a rectification nevertheless
2. While the hotel staff has good intentions , they are generally slow. My ire is more towards the owners of the hotel who generally are in the place throughout. They are kind of cold ( I know I am getting personal here) but I truly feel if they named it after themselves then they better know how to add that personal touch especially if this is a holiday retreat.
The food served up in the resort's very lovely diningroom is absolutely delicious, probably some of the best, if not the best that we had in three months in South Asia. The diningroom has a glass wall looking out over Kangra Valley and conveys the genuine peace and quite of the spot. Often the family's horse are grazing on the tiny meadow just beyond the terrace outside the diningroom adding to the overall pastoral feel of the place.
If you are about, tea is served on the terrace between 4.30-5.30pm, and the family often join, which is really nice. I believe that this is out of a genuine like for people and interest in what holiday-makers are doing rather than any gimmick or false motivation.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Colonel's Resort and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and peaceful place to spend some time.
