We stayed in this hotel on our way to the Vendee. We wanted to see the Chateau at Fougeres. The hotel was typically French and charming. Excellent value for money and far nicer than staying in one of the modern chains. The breakfast was excellent. There was free public parking nearby although no parking at the hotel. It was very... My husband, 3 children (4 months, almost 2 years, 3.5 years), my Mum and I stayed in the Balzac for 1 night and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We needed a stop over on the way back from St. Jean de Monts campsite back to Cherbourg ferry so I picked Fougeres as looked like from my internet research a nice... More

We really enjoyed staying here. The proprietor was very welcoming, friendly, directed us to an excellent restaurant, speaks very good English and was just fun to talk to. The hotel is a traditional european hotel with a lot of character. Our room was larger than most of the other hotels where we stayed, with a large bath with a shower... More

Continuing a cycle trip from Cherbourg to La Rochelle I arrived in this charming old town on the first night, not really sure what I was going to find. The location couldn't be any better, centre of the old town, the hotel was French traditional & full of character. The staff were v friendly & helpful. Highly recommended, it was... More

My husband and I stayed for only 1 night at the Hotel Balzac during our drive from Normandy to the Loire Valley. We considered it only a "stopping off" point during our plans, but were pleasantly surprised by both the beauty of the city and the concern and care displayed by the manager/madame at the hotel. For 54 Euros, our... More

We had a very nice stay at the Hotel Balzac. The room was small but very good value, right in the middle of Fougeres and the proprietor welcoming and helpful. The town was buzzing with a big carnival and the hotel was a quiet haven.

This hotel is a good 2* but is very centrally located, and the owner is extremely helpful. The rooms, we had number 3 are small but clean, adequate, and well provided, good bathroom. The breakfast again is adequate for 6 euros, but we did enjoy better elsewhere for a slightly increase in cost. However no complaints at all. Dine at... More

At our arrival I liked the exterior and the position of the hotel .. It was on the main street of the city..It was good to find an internet point that you can use. It is not very frecuent in that area to find internet cafes .but... In the ourside it looked nice, but as soon as you get in... More

We stayed in this hotel for one night on our way home to England. We booked it because of its location and the reviews on here. We found it without too much trouble and parked on the road outside the hotel and received a warm welcome at the desk. We had a quadruple and a double room on the top... More

We needed a stopover en route from the Pyrenees and Fougeres is a lovely place to visit. The hotel is ideally situated for a wander around the town but don't expect a modern establishment. The rooms are small, the en suite bathrooms separated by a shutter rather than a door but the location and welcome more than make up for... More

“If there are rooms not facing the street these would be a better choice if staying on a Friday night”

“We had a room at the front which overlooks the main street. There was the early morning noise of the market setting up, but to be honest, it added to the experience of being in this charming french town. The church bells mentioned on other reports can be heard from all parts within the hotel, but again, did not aversely effect our stay. They do sound a bit 'tinny' mind you.”
