A lovely 'castle' hotel - great for visiting Orvieto. Great staff, good pool and very nice and clean rooms.

What a pleasant place to stay! It is only minutes from the main part of Cortona. The grounds are quiet and peaceful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Don't miss the restaurant. It is a terrific value, and the food was the best we had on this trip to iTALY.

Lovely 17th century house with superb large rooms, windows and river underneath. Only for those with car willing to drive around. We stayed 7 nights in mid May. Orvieto center ten min up the hill, in May paid parking easy to get. We have been here before but wanted to come back as the setting is just unbelievable and city...

In the oppressive heat, it was like finding an oasis including a pool. The villa is wonderfully restored with delightful rooms--if you don't mind stairs. The restaurant served an excellent reasonable dinner. The AC worked well.

We stayed here one night and were very disappointed. The bedroom was fairly clean (apart from the dusty flowers) however the bathroom was grubby. I did ask for the bathroom to be cleaned when we went out for the afternoon however the request was ignored. There didn't seem to be any communal area or bar (or we were not told...

I came for a long getaway weekend but did not resist going further the next morning. The name of the place is Ristorante Albergo Villa Ciconia but the restaurant has been closed since some time. The front desk was friendly giving some indication where to eat but they were completely outdated, 2 out of three indications were closed for a...

My wife and I stayed at the "Villa Ciconia" with other friends as part of a mini-break and to attend a wedding in nearby "La Badia". The hotel is an old stone manor house with lots of character and an impressive stone staircase leading to the rooms above. Our room was of a decent standard if not particularly opulent and...

First, the Ciconia was spotless, with large rooms and roomy bathroom. Nicely renovated to keep the feel of the old manor house but not over-decorated. I liked the feel of the plain stucco walls, wide hallways and old woodwork, which gave a slightly monastic feel. Set in a small park, the Ciconia gate is right on the highway louping around...

We were attracted to this hotel firstly by the fact that it was included in the "Charme and RelaX" guide, an Italian guide to hotels and guest houses of a generally very high standard. The blurb started by describing the hotel as being "In the green of the Umbria country and just outside the beautiful town of Orvieto"- Wrong: it...

An interesting building with beautiful grounds and pool. The rooms are extremely large and the ceilings are way up there. Furnishings and beds were OK. Staff was helpful, but not very welcoming. The restaurant is closed Monday, the night we were there, so the staff directed us to a restaurant just up the road. It was probably the best dinner...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It is an elegant Villa which dates back to the 15th century and it is surrounded by an age-old park at the confluence of the river Chiani and the Carcaione. Local Historiography tells us that the structure was originally a tower, “La Turchinetta”, and was property of one of “Monaldeschi” of Cervara associated with Catherina of Sweden. This enlargement was commissioned to Ippolito Scalza (1532)by the then owner of the tower Vincenzo Butius. It was said that Butius, suffering from bad health, was advised by doctors to live near a river. The villa was built, so that the Carcaione stream ran under one of the arches which upheld the structure. River deposits, with time have caused the ground floor of the structure to become submerged and therefore the “piano nobile” is now on the first floor. The hotel which is situated on the 2nd floor, it is of only 12 rooms, with old style furniture and canopy bed,the windows of which look onto the villa’s park.Recent reconstructuring retained all the original characteristics of the villa (thick walls, large beams, and terracotta paving) Although guaranteeing every comfort, the atmosphere is typically tranquil. The restaurant on the ground floor has two large halls. In the main hall there is a lacunar ceiling with engraved and decorated strips, painted with allegorical motifs and landscape scenes. One can admire a stone fireplace which is thought to be the work of “ Ippolito Scalza”.The excellently run Restaurant presents high class genuine Umbrian culinary cuisine. The wine cellar is well stocked with high qualitywines and of course Orvieto classico. In the Hotel we have a outdoor swimmingpool but at about 1000 m. there are also a indoor swimmingpool, football ground, tennis-ground to public use.In our Villa's park there is a free parking area.Villa Ciconia is situated at about 2 Kms from the Florence-Rome motorway exit, 1 hour by car far from Rome,1 hour and half by car from Florence. You can find the train-bus station at about 1km from our hotel. The nearest airport is"Fiumicino" located near Rome, you can arrive there in 1 hour and 30 minutes ... more   less
