We booked this trip up very last minute BUT were totally delighted with our choice. We found ALL the staff to be so helpful and we soon felt very 'at home'. As other reviewers have mentioned, the bathroom was a bit outdated but the overall feel about this hotel was wonderful. The buffet breakfast was amazing and we could not fault it in any way. Two years seems a long time to wait to experience the refurbished hotel but we shall make every effort to be back!
Why bother with a review when this hotel closes tomorrow for major refurbishment? Simply because we wish to record our thanks to all concerned for the opportunity to spend 9 days in an old, charming hotel in Menaggio in a beautiful, peaceful part of Italy. From Paulo through to the chambermaids the staff were exceptional, always helpful and friendly while being professional. Yes, if the hotel was not closing we would have pointed out several faults and omissions needing attention in the refurbishment, ranging from the hopeless showers to consistently luke warm scrambled eggs. But our abiding memory of the Grand Hotel Victoria will be very positive. We would love to return in two years time but, sadly, we may not make it.
I read reviews that say this hotel is disappointing which baffles me but I see many like it too as we did.
This hotel was part of a relatively last minute booking. We therefore felt lucky to have such a lovely location. The hotel is not on or above a main road like many, sure there’s a road but it’s not the main thoroughfare. The hotel does have lovely views and also brilliantly located for Menaggio with the C10 buss to Como, ferry’s to everywhere on the lake and a lovely square with bars and restaurants with a lovely feel to the place.
Ok we know the hotel needs a refurb but this we knew when we went it was plane to see in the reviews. However this didn’t affect our stay as the positives so out way the negatives. The staff were ALL fantastic, warm, friendly, helpful and attentive. The grand frontage the lovely entrance/reception and dining areas were faultless and showed the grandeur of its age. Ok so I booked a lake view room, 203 and this wasn’t obscured by trees, it was small but I guess that’s the compromise. If we had gone garden view the rooms would have been bigger. All exceptionally clean and cleaned every day. The bathroom was perhaps dated but functional and clean.
We went half board and the four course meals were all of good quality and not buffet style which you often expect to find. An individual menu was presented each night and if there was a course there which wasn’t to taste an alternative was offered. We went out one night and the staff commented next day, we were clearly missed and demonstrated their attentiveness.
The pool location was at back of hotel in a small garden and was pleasant enough.
We stayed here for 3 nights. Reception and housekeeping staff were all delightful. Breakfast waiting staff less so. All they had to do was serve tea or coffee but no smiles were forthcoming. Our room was comfortable enough, although small and dark. The bathroom had no natural light and had an unpleasant, musty smell. There was an old fashioned, hand held shower over the bath and there were no grab handles, which we felt was potentially dangerous. Also no shower screen, so the floor would get very wet. We understand the hotel is closing at the end of September for a major refurbishment. It is much needed.
We've just returned from a long weekend at the Grand Hotel Victoria and already we want to a return trip! We're gutted it is closing for a refurb for so long but can't wait to go back and only hope the refurb doesn't change the character of the hotel which is like stepping back into a glamorous time gone by. Menaggio has lots of lovely restaurants and bars - we never had an 'average meal', every meal was fantastic! The hotel has the best location in Menaggio and is perfectly located a couple of minutes from the main square area and right on the lake front. Our room was a garden view which had a separate lounge area with balcony and double room with balcony also and lovely views of the mountains behind, the pool and to the right, the lake itself. Definitely recommend a visit to Villa del Balbaneillo, the gardens were so beautiful. We walked from the ferry upto the Villa and then got the river taxi back having lunch at the hotel just where the ferry drops - def recommend. We also hired a boat (ABC) from just outside the hotel and again would highly recommend. You have to swim in lake Como too - the water is so clear and warm and definitely something you should do. All in all, we loved the hotel, the staff were great, the location perfect and really there was nothing to fault at all. Can't wait to re-book when it re-opens...

Hi, we used rent car. You can ask Hotel arrange for you pick up ( about 180-190 EUR) each direction). You can use public transportation: train to Como or Varenna, take ferry to Menaggio and taxi inside Menagio.
