Detailed Reviews
Lovely resort with great staff. Food and treatment were exceptional. Lovely beach room but pretty basic for the price (very high for Sri Lanka)
The resort uses far too much plastic. The beach is stunning but depressing as it is covered in plastic and other rubbish. It would cost so little for the business along the beach employ beach cleaners. One member of staff, for example, spent the whole day sweeping around the pool staring at young women. I’d put him on the beach! Why not some signs telling people not to litter?

Surya Lanka re-opened on the 1. of April and we were there from this day on. We were very impressed by the extensive preparations they had done to fullfil the criteria for Level 1 hotels (Covid hygiene). It was our fifth visit and we had the great fortune to be there with only 6 other guests. This allowed us to experience the treatments very intensively. The service and food were excellent as always. Overall, very few tourists were there, but we want to encourage people to come visit Surya Lanka and experience the atmosphere, treatments, food, and the amazing landscape.
We want to thank the whole staff for their extreme dedication. They had to stay on the grounds of the resort during the whole time.
Despite the locked up situation, it is possible to take long relaxing walks on the beautiful beach.

Located near Matara, right by the sea at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. We were able to enjoy an authentic Panchakarma of 7 days, and of the 4 Ayurvedic resorts we have visited so far, this is certainly the most professionally run resort. Everything is perfectly coordinated and organized, in a fantastic beach location and with very delicious Ayurvedic food. The large freshwater pool and the yoga courses (12 times a week, separated into beginners and advanced) are particularly worth mentioning, as is the new condition of the buildings and rooms. The sea in this bay is not as rough as practically everywhere else in Sri Lanka, and you can also watch the coastal fishermen at work every day.

+1
The resort is beautifully situated, the beach is idyllic, the garden has great old trees.
The facility is however puristic overall!
The feel-good character is missing in almost all areas.
The buffet is simple, the place for afternoon tea in a back area is rather unloving. The tables and chairs are made of wood without seat cushions. You don't want to linger there.
If you like to be quiet and be on your own, you stay that way.
Guests travelling alone sit far away from each other and behind each other.
Almost like a punishment at school - but maybe that's part of the philosophy of the hotel.
The treatments can certainly keep up with other hotels, but in some areas the privacy is insufficient because there are sometimes 2 guests in one room, which I found absolutely disturbing!
The treatment rooms are also simply and not tastefully furnished. Especially because there are lots of plastic bottles and medicinal tinctures lying around.
Other hotels are really good at that!
The worst thing was the heat in the rooms. Even if you think that air conditioning is not a good idea for an Ayurveda treatment, healthy sleep and nightly rest are part of a successful treatment.
There were a lot of room changes during this time.
They make an effort, but there are now resorts that really pamper their guests during an Ayurveda treatment!
The excursions were a particular highlight (safari, Galle, etc.). Here, they also took the dates into consideration.
My conclusion: it can be better!
Even if the hotel is one of the pioneers, at some point the time comes not to rely too much on it.
I would prefer another resort under these circumstances!

I had a blissful experience during my stay at the Surya Lanka Ayurvedic resort.
The room was very well kept, spacious and equipped with all the comforts I needed.
The highlight of my trip was definitely the amazing staff. They were so kind and I felt very well looked after yet not intrusive which was what I wanted during my Ayurvedic retreat.
The food is exceptional. Being a complete vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly impressed by the options offered. It was some of the best food I had in Sri Lanka.
Lastly, the location is unmatched with a delightful oceanfront setting and well kept gardens. Amazing for a peaceful stroll in the evenings.
I am very grateful to everyone at the Surya Lanka Ayurvedic resort for my stay and look forward to visiting again in the future.

Beautiful garden area on an idyllic stretch of beach. Clean, slightly reduced rooms, matching an Ayurveda treatment. Treatments and med. Department very competent and caring. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Food is great...you don't miss anything. An absolute recommendation.

If you are looking for authentic ayurveda this is the place to be. I loved the vegetarian food. Nothing was too much hazzle for the Chef, it was every day delicious and he would even cook special wishes if you missed one of the foods because of your treatments. If you stay two weeks and you decide for an intensive cure then be assured it's quite a lot of treatments! I had 64 in 12 days...The ayurvedic clinic was very simple but the treatments and the doctors very good!!!!
The hotel itself is not more than maximum 3 stars. The rooms are okay but my bathroom was not.
The owners are not open to feedback...they have their point of view and that's it. I felt like in a prison sometimes there. The beach is beautiful and they try to protect it however it was so deserted that i felt unsafe and in a way always observed...which was confirmed on my second last day by an exhibitionist...I would do again an ayurveda cure BUT for me it's clear that i want to have more confort and have also the possibility to leave the hotel without justifying myself. So my recommendation is if you are looking for very good treatments and good food this is the place to go, but if you are a luxurious traveller as I am and a free spirit i do not recommend. I will for sure do another cure but in another hotel. Thank you very much to all the staff you were very sweet!!!!

Response from Derick S, Manager at Surya Lanka Ayurveda Beach Resort
Responded 16 Dec 2014
Dear Guest We’re glad you appreciated the food and our excellent medical treatments at Surya Lanka. Unfortunately exhibitionists operating on Sri Lanka beaches is a regrettable but reasonably prevalent feature of tourism. Definitely not pleasant, especially for female guests. Action has been taken to stop this man so that the Talalle bay remains a safe, pleasant beach to enjoy. As to your comment that you felt like in a prison. Most Sri Lankan hotel properties are walled. This however, does not stop any guest from leaving the property to wherever they wish to go, at whatever time they wish. We also offer weekly ½ day excursions to near by places of scenic / cultural interest, so that guests can see something of this beautiful island as well as twice weekly transport to Matara. There is really no reason for guests to feel “imprisoned”. We run Surya Lanka on very definite lines and according to a unique philosophy, which is the result of many years in the hospitality industry. This is recognized and appreciated by the vast majority of our guests who know that their wishes and needs are at the care of Surya Lanka. I’m sorry that you did not feel that this was the case. Kind Regards Manager – Colombo Office

Very quite, relaxing atmosphere, great Ayurvedic treatments, simple but comfortable and clean rooms, friendly service, professional care. Right next to the beach. The only thing what was very unpleasant for me, as a dog lover, were stray dogs on the beach, actually everywhere in Sri Lanka. They are very friendly though, not aggressive at all. Unfortunately only local government could fix this very sad problem by neutering them.

Surya Lanka is a rare little gem that overwhelms you with serenity as you walk in. From the warm, friendly staff to the lush, scenic gardens that allow you access to the untouched beach - it's a place you will never forget. The Ayurvedic treatments exceed expectation through professionalism and authenticity. There are many treatments to choose from personalised to your own needs. I received a full body and head massage with a steam treatment after and cannot advocate Ayurveda more. The vegetarian buffet is delicious with sincere staff looking after your every need. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful resort as I've now been there twice and can't wait to go back again!
