The Glen Orchy is a converted Edwardian Convent located two minutes walk from Lerwick city centre. We are situated in a quiet neighbourhood with views which overlook the town and both Lerwick and Breiwick Bays, across the street from us is a golf course along the coast which also boasts great walking routes. We are family owned and operated with a few specially selected staff. We do our very best to make our guests feel welcomed and valued, we want everyone to have a pleasant stay and leave with good memories. We try to make the extra effort for our guests because we know they have come great distances to stay with us.
This is probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed. I arrived to be ‘greeted’ by the very grumpy and unfriendly Thai owner who really couldn’t have cared less. The room was up numerous stairs (I had a lot of luggage) and was lack lustre, in desperate need of re-decorating and some decent furnishings. The towels were thread bare, the duvet too small for the bed, the pillows were smelly and bed linen only fit for recycling. I couldn’t face breakfast as the breakfast room smelt musty and grubby and was in desperate need of a deep clean. I do not recommend this establishment and couldn’t wait to leave.

Booked a last minute room for the lowest price in Lerwick (by quite a margin) and was very satisfied. Great location in a quiet residential area, just 10 minutes walk from the town centre. Staff were lovely and very helpful. My room was basic but clean and everything worked. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space and tea/ coffee provided. Definitely a solid budget option and I'd certainly stay again.

The low point of my uncomfortable week at this hotel was witnessing the Thai owner ignore a fire alarm and turn her back on concerned guests. The alarm went off after 11pm on 30 September, we guests gathered in the main hall ready to evacuate. The owner came out, turned off the alarm at the panel stating it was room 3. Her only reaction was to stick her head around the corner and sniff the air. She then announced that room 3 must be smoking, and without making any further attempts to check on the safety of room 3 or any possible fire, made to return to her staff quarters. We guests all clamoured with concerns, asking her to at least knock on room 3's door in case they had for example fallen asleep with a cigarette. The owner completely ignored us and went back ot her quarters. It was left to one of the guests to knock on Room 3's door and ask about their wellbeing. Appalling negligence of fire safety and I left the next day to move to a different hotel as I no longer felt safe. This was after putting up with more than a week of erratic and indifferent housekeeping (I don't think they changed my bedding once), a bowl-shaped bed ineffectively propped up with a sheet of plywood, worn-out pilly bedding and threadbare towels, unfriendly staff whose English is not great, and the paper-thin wall between my room and next room's bathroom - I could hear absolutely everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, it was as if they were using the toilet in my room. The only pros here are the convenience for the town centre and Wool Week events, and the breakfasts were good.…

When I booked this hotel it offered the best value for money, so my expectations were not high. It's a traditional, straight forward guest house with very few frills. Situated in a quiet area within easy reach of the town centre. The parking was good and the room offered everything I needed. The staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was good too.

This guest house was on a good location for visiting Lerwick. Breakfasts were OK and parking was good. Rooms were very tiny - and there was no lift - so upper accommodation required hefting your baggage. Overall - the accommodation options in town were quire limited - and this choice was quite OK

The cleaning of the room could be much better. We got absolutely no cleaning of the room during our 4 night stay. Not even the bathroom. The hotel in general needs an update. The staff were friendly and helpful as we arrived late in the evy and needed something to eat.

What an experience. They seemed surprised when we arrived and asked us if we were checking out! Well, not yet, we have booked for 2 nights first. And old hotel who reminded us of one in Torquay... Clean beds and possibility to have the window open 24-7 made it ok enough. A little better cleaning in corners is recommended. Good breakfast is a +. Paper walls and floors is a minus. Thanks to the breakfast lady, You made our day.

I'm glad others had good experiences here. Sadly I didn't. I was given a single room which smelled of cigarette smoke, in the ground floor near the smokers area outside the back of the hotel. The view outside my window was of a large skip. The room itself was dingy, curtains damaged and the bedside table was very scratched. The bathroom shower arrangement was a challenge. The only upside was lashings of warm water. I wasn't able to relax didn't sleep and won't leave refreshed.

We had an amazing stay at Glen Orchy abd we will diffently stay again, rooms are lovely and plenty of room. Breakfast was the best abd scrambled egg was the best I’ve ever had, lots of fresh fruit and yogurt and plenty of choice. The general manager Brad is really lovely and helpful and deserves a pay-rise as he works so hard and is so polite and helpful and smiling… Thank you for being you And all your staff we will see you again very soon….

I was greeted by a very helpful and friendly member of staff, who explained in detail all I needed to know regarding my stay. My room was basic and dated, with an uncomfortable bed. I'm not sure when the bedding was last renewed. There was no hair dryer. The bins were emptied daily but tea/coffee facilities were never replenished. I found a cut toe nail on the floor. The shower was ancient and very temperamental. If I got the temperature right somebody else in the building used their shower and mine went cold, or off completely. Breakfast was served between 6.30 - 8.30 which I felt was a bit early when you are on your holidays. Service was slow and the chef spoke little English. The selection of hot food was good, as was the cold. The only downside was some food stuffs were not covered and were tired looking by day four. They do not cater for anyone with an allergy, which is poor in this day and age. Today I only received one slice of toast as Tesco had run out, apparently. This was quite expensive and therefore I did not feel it was value for money. If my husband had been with me I'm sure he would have asked for another room. There was ample parking and a good situation, handy for the town.…
