The Royal Hotel garners praise for its exceptional value, especially the cost-effective meals and accommodations, although a minority view the food as slightly pricey. Guests laud the spacious, clean rooms with stunning views, though a few mention maintenance and privacy issues. The hotel's central location is celebrated for its picturesque river vistas and proximity to attractions. While the overall atmosphere and cleanliness receive acclaim, some suggest certain areas could use improvement. Service at the Royal Hotel generally receives high marks for the staff's warmth and efficiency, with few noting occasional lapses.

Just got home today from a 2 night break at the Royal Hotel our 4th stay here, the team at the Hotel are truly excellent and are genuinely happy to look after your every need.
we were in room 40 a river view room with a balcony which was very nice and cosy with a lovely powerful shower, we had supper there last night and it was very nice and large portions with super attentive service , and the wine selection was very good and reasonably priced.

We were very impressed with the hotel's covid attention whereby you needed to reserve a table to even have a drink here , and tables spaced apart accordingly made us feel safe whilst enjoying our pre new year few days away.

The breakfast was excellent also.
Well done to Matt, Sally and the #team Royal Hotel you really made our stay a great pleasure once again, and we look forward to returning someday soon.

Best wishes to all for 2022

I decided on a night away and Ross on Wye was the location I had chosen for a couple of days in the Wye Valley.
This hotel is beautiful, has stunning views and in a brilliant location to explore the area.
I stopped and had dinner in the restaurant, ordered via the app, a very simple process. The food was perfect, the gin amazing! Service times were spot on and the young girl doing the cleaning was being very thorough, which made me relax during these uncertain times.
I will not hesitate to return, nor hesitate to recommend.

We spent two nights at the Royal Hotel and really enjoyed sitting out on the beautiful terrace enjoying the views and the sunshine. We stayed in a "superior room" on the second floor which was very spacious and had amazing views. The room was clean and comfortable but lacked the extras I would expect in a "superior room" There was only basic coffee and tea provided and no toiletries other than a large dispenser of hand soap in the bathroom.

Can't fault the service we received, all the staff were great and there was a lovely atmosphere both in the bar and out on the terrace, food and drinks were served quickly and it was really handy being able to order on the app. Unfortunately, as this is a Greene King establishment the quality of food on offer was quite poor - not a criticism of the kitchen, just the Greene King chain.

Breakfast staff were friendly and cheerful, even when it was very busy - the staff in this hotel really are outstanding. I was surprised and a bit concerned to see a buffet at breakfast as this is not ideal when we should still be taking precautions to avoid the spread of Covid. I would have much preferred full table service even if this would have meant fewer options.

Free parking is a bonus, we didnt have any problems finding a space although it can be a bit tight if you have a larger vehicle.

We stayed here for 2 nights and were really pleased with it. The accommodation was clean and there was evidence of sanitizing stations as well as extra cleaners around the place cleaning banisters, bar area, etc...In the room we had tea & coffee included although soft furnishings were kept to a minimum. We did not have breakfast so cannot comment but ate in the restaurant. Again felt safe throughout the meal. Food was good and portions plentiful.

After two days in the Cotswolds in appalling accommodation, The Royal is a breath of fresh air . An old building superbly maintained, excellent staff and great food .
We certainly hit the jackpot with location , the hotel is on top of the hill with superb views in all directions and a one minute walk to the town centre .
Extremely good value compared to what we’ve seen recently.

Restores my faith in British hospitality .

My wife and i came to Ross on Wye on Monday 30th December and stayed at the Royal Hotel on a dinner bed & breakfast basis. We had room 42 a lovely balcony room overlooking the gardends and the river wye , it was a lovely view and the room was large and nicely appointed with a great bathroom.

The attention at check in was spot on and we found all the staff to be attentive and friendly. The Supper in the evening was extremely delicious and excellent value for money with a huge choice far better than we have encountered elsewhere when taking d.b.b. and the breakfast was also excellent, and personally to my liking as it was served to you rather than a buffet basis.

The car parking arrangement which by the way is f.o.c. was also a great advantage, i would not hesitate to recommend the Royal Hotel and we will be back.

The Royal has possibly the best location in Ross on Wye, perched majestically on top of the hill it overlooks the beautiful river Wye and is close to the main shopping areas of Ross, there’s plenty of parking but it’s a bit of a squeeze and you may need to do a bit of manoeuvring to get a space. The welcome was friendly and having paid for our stay upon arrival (unusual but not a problem) we were given our room keys and dinner and breakfast arrangements.
The rooms were clean and comfy but could really do with redecorating though they were not scruffy, just a bit tired. The bathrooms are adequate but take your own toiletries as there’s not much provided other than some liquid soap, towels were fresh and clean as was the bedding. The food was good though not outstanding and the restaurant service was very good plenty of choice at both dinner and breakfast with Veggie options available.
My only niggle was the wi fi connection which was useless, its run by Sky Cloud but it needs to be ditched, everywhere else I’ve stayed in the last 10 years has been able to provide a broadband connection I can easily connect to but having spent an age filling in details I still couldn’t connect to SkyCloud, we were only staying one night so I didn’t bother reception about it but looking at other reviews it seems to be a recurring issue and to be frank it’s something that could be easily and cheaply resolved, shame nobody has.
Overall a pleasant stay and we all agreed it was good value and we would stay again, the staff really are a credit to this hotel.

We visited with a party of six today and received terrible service.

Upon arrival, we explained that one of our group was joining shortly and that we would like to eat there but not immediately. We were told that this was fine and were seated outside. After one set of drinks, our friend joined us and we ordered additional drinks and food. We received our drinks but someone came out shortly after our order and said that there would be a 45 minute wait on the food as a wedding group had just arrived and they were struggling to prepare the food on time. We said this would be fine as the children were really hungry and we thought it would take longer to go elsewhere. After another wait, someone then came back and said that actually it would be over an hour and would we like to cancel our order for a refund. It was made pretty clear that they wanted us to do this so we cancelled. After the refund was issued we were told that we would not receive it back into our bank for three days. The meal was quite expensive so it effectively meant that we were left out of pocket.

The refund issued was for the food alone, despite the fact that the second batch of drinks were only purchased so that we could wait for the food. We left most of these as it was getting late by this time and we needed to feed the children.

We are not unreasonable people and understand that the wedding party should take priority, but they were aware of the situation when they seated us and when they accepted our order. Most places would refund the drinks in such circumstances - nearly all of us were on soft drinks and overpriced shandy so it wouldn't have been a great loss to them.

If they had seemed anything near apologetic we wouldn't have felt so annoyed but the uncharismatic staff who dealt with us really didn't seem to care. I think they probably weren't coping with the demands of the wedding but being polite and apologetic costs nothing and takes no time at all.

I just hope that the wedding party was dealt with more sensitively than us but I suspect not. They were expected to share the same area as the general public and the organisation looked to be chaotic. Even my 16 year old daughter commented that it was a pretty poor set-up for a wedding and suggested that it would make sense for different staff to be dealing with the wedding than the public.

It was such a pity because the hotel is set in a beautiful place - but if you want a dream wedding I would seriously consider choosing somewhere else. You can have a wedding in a beautiful location but if the staff haven't got a clue how to run a business it could end up ruining your special day.

On a positive note, we went down the road to The Man of Ross Inn to eat. We were greeted warmly, they moved tables around to accommodate us and the food was significantly cheaper. Maybe the staff at The Royal Hotel could go there for some lessons on customer service.

Dear Guest. We apologise for your experience. We felt it was the appropriate action to take as your order came through much later than expected baring in mind your seated time. The kitchen team received your ticket just as starters for the wedding were being sent and knew it would not be possible to deliver your meals until after the 40 wedding mains had been served. Rather than leave you waiting we felt we needed to communicate and offer you the choice. They were not struggling to serve the wedding on time as they had been seated on time with a full pre order. We have been hosting weddings for over 8 yrs and have never received anything but fabulous feedback. On booking guests are aware that they will share our bar area and external areas with hotel guests and local non residents and book their special day with us regardless. We received excellent feedback from all wedding guests yesterday both regards service , food quality and environment with both bride and groom thanking the team for making it their dream wedding, so I am not quite sure why you felt the need to suggest otherwise. We would of course love the luxury of having separate teams to look after the wedding and non wedding guests but unfortunately the reality of Covid with many team members having to self isolate, did not allow for this. I am proud of the team on duty for managing to look after both through team work, organisation and hard work. We are frequently praised for our levels of customer service but apologise that we did not meet your needs on the day.

Stayed for one night with friends. What a lovely hotel with great character, sat on the top of a hill with breathtaking views. Our check in was straightforward, with COVID rules followed we immediately felt safe and our minds at ease. We chilled on the extensive outside patio taking in the views. We made use of the app to order our drinks which were quickly delivered. The staff were friendly and welcoming.
We made the most of the hotels central location and wandered along the high street taking in all the quirky shops.
We later returned for dinner which did not disappoint, all served piping hot and cooked to perfection.
Lovely quirky twin room at the top of the building with again fab views. Wish we could of stayed longer.
Thank you to The Royal for such a relaxing stay.

Decided to visit for our first trip post lockdown and we were slightly worried about how social distancing guidelines would be managed. (We are Welsh so they are different here).
The hotel is central which is great and they provide parking which is a bonus and easy to find on the sat nav, however this is where our positives end.
We found that the photos of the rooms were misleading as on entering our standard double room we were disappointed to find that the room was very dated. The bath was full of dust and appeared not to have been cleaned for a while and when using the bath/shower it's extremely slippery when trying to get out. We are both young and able bodied and we struggled.
Our toilet seat was broken and so unstable when trying to use it.
The bed was extremely uncomfortable and it was hard to find a spot on the bed without a spring poking you in the back.
The windows are old fashioned windows that you have to lift and they were extremely heavy and hard to push up. The room was extremely warm and we weren't able to plug the fan in close to us as there weren't many plugs in the room and they were all at the other end of the room.
Finally, after arriving at the hotel we received a call to our room saying the card details I entered on booking.com weren't correct. This made us feel slightly uneasy as we weren't told we were being charged straight away. This made for a slightly poor start to our visit, whilst we didn't receive and thank you or farewell when leaving and were simply told to place our room key in a box next to reception.

The day we arrived we decided to eat at the hotel to save finding somewhere at short notice and unfortunately there wasn't much choice and when it arrived it was very underwhelming. Frozen chips and fish/scampi and this put us off having breakfast there in the morning as we had planned.
We also ordered drinks which took 25 minutes to arrive at our table, therefore we don't think the Greene King app is being used to its greatest effect. However it was nice to see staff regularly cleaning tables and the bannisters.

Dear Guest. Thank you for your extensive feedback. I apologise that there were certain elements of your stay which you were unhappy with. With bookings.com bookings guests are advised that the payment will be taken straight away and when card details fail we are required to ask for alternative details. With new Covid -19 precautions all bookings are charged on arrival and all procedures explained to enable the reduced contact promise to be fulfilled. This is why guests are now asked to drop their key in our new drop box on departure. On arrival I was the lady who checked you in and explained all procedures . I always ensure that guests are aware that if they need anything at all to let reception know. We keep rubber bath mats behind reception should guests require them. We have an on-site handyman who would have tightened your toilet seat immediately. We also hold extension leads behind reception should guests require them. As we are a 17th century building our features are oldie worldly including our windows. With regards to our menu choice we are one of the few businesses who have reopened with a full menu, which offers 28 main courses. I apologise that this selection did not meet your needs. I will of course speak with housekeeping regards dust as this is not acceptable at all. Again I wish you had brought it to my attention at the time. With the government eat out to help out scheme and the hot weather resulting in double the volume of guests our drinks dispense team did struggle to keep up with demand which resulted your wait for drinks. Again we apologise for this. Many thanks Sally.

Hi there, It would depend entirely on the type of booking you have made with the hotel, as we have both refundable and non-refundable rates. Your confirmation paperwork or email will let you know if your rate is refundable, but if you are not sure feel free to contact the hotel directly. Rob Lead Receptionist

HI There, I'm afraid to say that we do not currently have any ground floor rooms here at The Royal Hotel, nor lift access to bedrooms. We have one double and one twin room located on a mezzanine floor of our annex - these are six steps from garden level. We recommend giving us a call at the Hotel should you have mobility needs and are wishing to stay with us. Rob, Lead Receptionist
