we were in room 40 a river view room with a balcony which was very nice and cosy with a lovely powerful shower, we had supper there last night and it was very nice and large portions with super attentive service , and the wine selection was very good and reasonably priced.
We were very impressed with the hotel's covid attention whereby you needed to reserve a table to even have a drink here , and tables spaced apart accordingly made us feel safe whilst enjoying our pre new year few days away.
The breakfast was excellent also.
Well done to Matt, Sally and the #team Royal Hotel you really made our stay a great pleasure once again, and we look forward to returning someday soon.
Best wishes to all for 2022
This hotel is beautiful, has stunning views and in a brilliant location to explore the area.
I stopped and had dinner in the restaurant, ordered via the app, a very simple process. The food was perfect, the gin amazing! Service times were spot on and the young girl doing the cleaning was being very thorough, which made me relax during these uncertain times.
I will not hesitate to return, nor hesitate to recommend.
Can't fault the service we received, all the staff were great and there was a lovely atmosphere both in the bar and out on the terrace, food and drinks were served quickly and it was really handy being able to order on the app. Unfortunately, as this is a Greene King establishment the quality of food on offer was quite poor - not a criticism of the kitchen, just the Greene King chain.
Breakfast staff were friendly and cheerful, even when it was very busy - the staff in this hotel really are outstanding. I was surprised and a bit concerned to see a buffet at breakfast as this is not ideal when we should still be taking precautions to avoid the spread of Covid. I would have much preferred full table service even if this would have meant fewer options.
Free parking is a bonus, we didnt have any problems finding a space although it can be a bit tight if you have a larger vehicle.
We certainly hit the jackpot with location , the hotel is on top of the hill with superb views in all directions and a one minute walk to the town centre .
Extremely good value compared to what we’ve seen recently.
Restores my faith in British hospitality .
The attention at check in was spot on and we found all the staff to be attentive and friendly. The Supper in the evening was extremely delicious and excellent value for money with a huge choice far better than we have encountered elsewhere when taking d.b.b. and the breakfast was also excellent, and personally to my liking as it was served to you rather than a buffet basis.
The car parking arrangement which by the way is f.o.c. was also a great advantage, i would not hesitate to recommend the Royal Hotel and we will be back.
The rooms were clean and comfy but could really do with redecorating though they were not scruffy, just a bit tired. The bathrooms are adequate but take your own toiletries as there’s not much provided other than some liquid soap, towels were fresh and clean as was the bedding. The food was good though not outstanding and the restaurant service was very good plenty of choice at both dinner and breakfast with Veggie options available.
My only niggle was the wi fi connection which was useless, its run by Sky Cloud but it needs to be ditched, everywhere else I’ve stayed in the last 10 years has been able to provide a broadband connection I can easily connect to but having spent an age filling in details I still couldn’t connect to SkyCloud, we were only staying one night so I didn’t bother reception about it but looking at other reviews it seems to be a recurring issue and to be frank it’s something that could be easily and cheaply resolved, shame nobody has.
Overall a pleasant stay and we all agreed it was good value and we would stay again, the staff really are a credit to this hotel.
Upon arrival, we explained that one of our group was joining shortly and that we would like to eat there but not immediately. We were told that this was fine and were seated outside. After one set of drinks, our friend joined us and we ordered additional drinks and food. We received our drinks but someone came out shortly after our order and said that there would be a 45 minute wait on the food as a wedding group had just arrived and they were struggling to prepare the food on time. We said this would be fine as the children were really hungry and we thought it would take longer to go elsewhere. After another wait, someone then came back and said that actually it would be over an hour and would we like to cancel our order for a refund. It was made pretty clear that they wanted us to do this so we cancelled. After the refund was issued we were told that we would not receive it back into our bank for three days. The meal was quite expensive so it effectively meant that we were left out of pocket.
The refund issued was for the food alone, despite the fact that the second batch of drinks were only purchased so that we could wait for the food. We left most of these as it was getting late by this time and we needed to feed the children.
We are not unreasonable people and understand that the wedding party should take priority, but they were aware of the situation when they seated us and when they accepted our order. Most places would refund the drinks in such circumstances - nearly all of us were on soft drinks and overpriced shandy so it wouldn't have been a great loss to them.
If they had seemed anything near apologetic we wouldn't have felt so annoyed but the uncharismatic staff who dealt with us really didn't seem to care. I think they probably weren't coping with the demands of the wedding but being polite and apologetic costs nothing and takes no time at all.
I just hope that the wedding party was dealt with more sensitively than us but I suspect not. They were expected to share the same area as the general public and the organisation looked to be chaotic. Even my 16 year old daughter commented that it was a pretty poor set-up for a wedding and suggested that it would make sense for different staff to be dealing with the wedding than the public.
It was such a pity because the hotel is set in a beautiful place - but if you want a dream wedding I would seriously consider choosing somewhere else. You can have a wedding in a beautiful location but if the staff haven't got a clue how to run a business it could end up ruining your special day.
On a positive note, we went down the road to The Man of Ross Inn to eat. We were greeted warmly, they moved tables around to accommodate us and the food was significantly cheaper. Maybe the staff at The Royal Hotel could go there for some lessons on customer service.
We made the most of the hotels central location and wandered along the high street taking in all the quirky shops.
We later returned for dinner which did not disappoint, all served piping hot and cooked to perfection.
Lovely quirky twin room at the top of the building with again fab views. Wish we could of stayed longer.
Thank you to The Royal for such a relaxing stay.
The hotel is central which is great and they provide parking which is a bonus and easy to find on the sat nav, however this is where our positives end.
We found that the photos of the rooms were misleading as on entering our standard double room we were disappointed to find that the room was very dated. The bath was full of dust and appeared not to have been cleaned for a while and when using the bath/shower it's extremely slippery when trying to get out. We are both young and able bodied and we struggled.
Our toilet seat was broken and so unstable when trying to use it.
The bed was extremely uncomfortable and it was hard to find a spot on the bed without a spring poking you in the back.
The windows are old fashioned windows that you have to lift and they were extremely heavy and hard to push up. The room was extremely warm and we weren't able to plug the fan in close to us as there weren't many plugs in the room and they were all at the other end of the room.
Finally, after arriving at the hotel we received a call to our room saying the card details I entered on booking.com weren't correct. This made us feel slightly uneasy as we weren't told we were being charged straight away. This made for a slightly poor start to our visit, whilst we didn't receive and thank you or farewell when leaving and were simply told to place our room key in a box next to reception.
The day we arrived we decided to eat at the hotel to save finding somewhere at short notice and unfortunately there wasn't much choice and when it arrived it was very underwhelming. Frozen chips and fish/scampi and this put us off having breakfast there in the morning as we had planned.
We also ordered drinks which took 25 minutes to arrive at our table, therefore we don't think the Greene King app is being used to its greatest effect. However it was nice to see staff regularly cleaning tables and the bannisters.
