An excellent location near the centre of Buxton and opposite the gardens attracted me to the hotel, but on first arrival one felt apprehensive with the remains of what looked like an annexe at the side of the building and an entrance disfigured by two unsightly rubbish bins on either side. The room was spacious enough in its dimensions and...

The conservatory pictured is non existent and resembles a building site. Alot of work needs carrying out at this hotel. No hairdryer, small towels, shower very poor. Heating not on in the day time. Lack of parking even though we reserved a space. Silver ware on tables never seen a bottle of silvo. Over priced. One small bottle of water...

We stayed at The Portland for one night. It is conveniently located in walking distance to bars and restaurants, with parking available on the front of the hotel or adjacent street. The reception was staffed by a very pleasant man who showed us to our rooms. First impressions of the hotel was that it had seen better days. Our rooms...

Buxton per se is well worth a visit. The location is inspiring and relaxing, and full of history and sights. But if you find a place to stay like the Portland you will have found the epitome of a perfect holiday. Perfect value for the money, brilliant breakfast, super host. The place may look unspecatcular from the outside, but wait...

This was a beautifully quirky hotel with fantastic staff who really made you feel welcome and attended to your needs. We drove up on Friday and were worried about late check-in however upon ringing the gentleman on reception was supremely helpful. Upon arrival he helped us with luggage and gave us good advice with regard to food and entertainment in...

Hotel is very tired and the excuse of its keeping its charm is just an excuse not to deal with the repairs that need doing. although i will state if your looking for a hotel in buxton ALL of them are like this. The bed was comfortable but that is the only real positive i can make. The breakfast was...

I have stayed here several times before but had not been for a few years. This is the polar opposite of the modern chain hotels as this is a family run business in an attractive old building. The hotel has changed little over the years but retains a charm in keeping with its period. This is not a soulless modern...

From bad to worse, Went for one night in January, got offered two rooms (the one we'd payed for and a cheaper one) when we actually got to our room it was freezing cold because the heating wasn't on and hadn't been all day, the rooms itself wasn't too badly decorated although smelt of mold which surrounded one of the...
