Our room was the top of the pick with lake front view and balcony . There was a sauna in the bathroom ( useless to us ) but the worst part is the shower . Shower head ( removable ) is mounted on the wall inside a large tub at tummy height so to have a shower we had to sit down in the tub !!! Very strange indeed ! Bathroom tiles are rocky at places and water pressure is very low . No tea and coffee making facilities. Balcony is wobbly on the side and could potentially be a safety issue
On the other hand the LOCATION IS UNBEATABLE and the old world decor has lots of character . The waterfront restaurant is very nice and the staffs are good . But they prefer booking so you must book , particularly if you don’t stay in the hotel ! Breakfast selection is average ( from 8-10 only) and they are very understaffed in the morning . The hotel is in the pedestrian zone when we arrived late at 6 pm at the town gate and tried to call a taxi but they aren’t really interested. In the end we had to drag our luggage 600m on a level waterfront street to the hotel . On our departure , taxi wasn’t metered and charge 20$ for a short 1 Km ride !

The hotel itself is gorgeous. The receptionist made our check-in process a breeze. We stayed on the top floor (3rd floor) corner room, while the kids had a regular room on the second level. Both rooms offered stunning views of the lake.
We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the hotel, where the service was excellent and the meals were delicious.
Although the hotel lacks air conditioning, the provided fan and open windows at night ensured we had a comfortable night's sleep. The beds were very comfortable as well.
Though a tiny town, this is the perfect location if you arrive by train/ferry boat. Hotel is barely a minute walk away. It’s located on Marktplatz, so you see the square every time you enter/exit hotel. And you have the beautiful lake bordering the hotel on the other side.
Not sure of front desk hours, but when I was there felt they were open from 8:00-22:00. During stay dealt mainly with Abhi who was welcoming and as helpful as anyone could possibly be. Checkin and checkout process was easy. Would note 2nd ferry boat in morning leaves at 8:15, so good idea to speak with front desk about it the night before.
Hotel is not inexpensive, but thought it was well worth it from a comfort and convenience standpoint. Cost varies significantly by type of room, so hopefully you can find the right trade off level for you.
The hotel was renovated about 10 years ago. My room was well furnished and had all the amenities I look for and more, other than no AC. Found the bed/pillows comfortable and had 2 great nights of sleep.
Unfortunately we did not have the best experience at dinner. We booked a table in the hotel for the 2nd of our 2 night stay and looked forward to it.
However, after an initial friendly welcome into the restaurant, the service went downhill after that. We were never checked on to ask if we wanted anything and had to chase the dessert menu. Not once did they come to check if we wanted more drink, if the meal was ok etc so finally we just got up and left. We then asked at the bar for a hot chocolate to take to the room and were told no, the bar closes at 9.00pm but it was only 8.10pm at that point! Begrudgingly they made us a hot chocolate.
Even though it was only 7.45pm, they were laying up the breakfast tables in the dining room room and you felt like you were in the way. All the staff were focusing on that and were not bothered about the diners. My sister in law did complain to the reception staff after the meal and we were told to email the hotel which we did but after 2 weeks have had no reply. In fairness, the staff at breakfast were very good indeed. Apparently, other diners complained also.
Considering the cost of the hotel and as my sister in law had travelled from the States to make a special visit to Hallstatt which was on her bucket list, the meal and service were a huge disappointment compared to the beautiful location of the hotel itself.
We were visiting Austria for a week, firstly in Vienna, then down to Salzburg and finally Hallstatt. Throughout the week, the service and food in hotels and restaurants and cafes had been exceptional but this was not the same
in Hallstatt.
We returned at 12:30 only to find a sign in reception that they were closed 12-3, which was not relayed to us when we left them, and there sat out luggage and others bags out in the open room with absolutely no security. We were unable to find an employee except for down in the restaurant and they had no idea who or how to call. We walked over to Heritage House Hotel who did have employees manning the desk and the manager called the shuttle for us which saved our evening plans in Venice.

Our table was on a platform extended from the hotel’s terrace. It was a cool day in late Spring. We watched the sun go down (note: it was a cloudy day, no sunset photo in case you are wondering).
It was a lovely experience to enjoy the views of Hallstatt, the lake and the mountains that I couldn’t remember too much of the food.
A white swan came to us to say “hello”!
I think the swans must have been so used to seeing tourists all the time. They didn’t disturb the guests at all.
We ordered a chicken soup and pasta dishes. The food was good and the service was great.
It was our best dining experience in Hallstatt.

We ate dinner at the terrace restaurant and had a wonderful meal and experience. Our server, we cannot remember her name, but she let us know that she was from Croatia, also she had long blue hair, was one of the best server we have ever had. Excellent attitude and personality. She was on top of everything. We could see an excellent teamwork between the staff, even though they were short that evening, because there was a large group of 30 in the main restaurant.
The only minus we have to point out is that unfortunately large groups book this hotel and that makes it a bit uncomfortable for the rest of us. They put (throw) their luggage everywhere in the entrance when they check in and when they check out. They expect the rest of us to just deal with it. The hotel needs to take control of this situation.
We went to have breakfast 20 minutes after the restaurant opened and almost all food was gone. Each table had 4-6 empty plates on them while people still eating. The cups to get a hot chocolate or cappuccino were all gone. That happened every morning we were there. The staff did as much as they could to keep up, but it was impossible.
These large groups don't care about the rest of the guests, it's just about them. This was not just at this hotel, it was everywhere we went in town. They will push through you and get in front of you as if you don't even exist.
This would be the only reason we may not return to Hallstatt. It was not a pleasant experience, whether you were taking a photo or trying to buy something. Even walking around was a challenge.
We saw signs in some restaurants saying that they only accept cash. We asked about this and were told that 80% of the businesses in Hallstaff require cash payment. This kind of tells us that they have had problems with credit cards.
We do appreciate having been to Hallstaff and hope someday the town will take control of these groups to allow other tourists to have a wonderful experience. By the signs we saw all over town, we can tell they are aware of this situation. Hopefully some day they will be able to do something about it.
"Just know that as outsiders, you can not drive yourself directly to the hotel. You'll love staying here. Just like us, you won't want to leave.❤️"Read full review
