This hotel is NO AIR CONDITIONING! ( luckily we stayed 2 nights early September so it is not that hot )
Our room was the top of the pick with lake front view and balcony . There was a sauna in the bathroom ( useless to us ) but the worst part is the shower . Shower head ( removable ) is mounted on the wall inside a large tub at tummy height so to have a shower we had to sit down in the tub !!! Very strange indeed ! Bathroom tiles are rocky at places and water pressure is very low . No tea and coffee making facilities. Balcony is wobbly on the side and could potentially be a safety issue
On the other hand the LOCATION IS UNBEATABLE and the old world decor has lots of character . The waterfront restaurant is very nice and the staffs are good . But they prefer booking so you must book , particularly if you don’t stay in the hotel ! Breakfast selection is average ( from 8-10 only) and they are very understaffed in the morning . The hotel is in the pedestrian zone when we arrived late at 6 pm at the town gate and tried to call a taxi but they aren’t really interested. In the end we had to drag our luggage 600m on a level waterfront street to the hotel . On our departure , taxi wasn’t metered and charge 20$ for a short 1 Km ride !

Dear guest, Yes, we don't have air conditioning. We live in the middle of the mountains, on a lake and don't need this additional environmental impact. The walls of the hotel are 80 cm thick and insulate very well in both winter and summer. You can also open the windows to ventilate. There is also a Dyson hot & cold in every room, with which you can also regulate the temperature. In the living room there is a Nespresso coffee machine with which you can make both tea and coffee. There is an infrared cabin in the bathroom, which many guests really appreciated. Concerning the transportation from the hotel to the parking lot, this is an issue of the community and not of the hotel.

This boutique hotel in the heart of Hallstatt is a gem, though be prepared for no on-site parking or car drop-off. You'll need to park at P1 and take a shuttle, which is well worth the slight inconvenience.

The hotel itself is gorgeous. The receptionist made our check-in process a breeze. We stayed on the top floor (3rd floor) corner room, while the kids had a regular room on the second level. Both rooms offered stunning views of the lake.
We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the hotel, where the service was excellent and the meals were delicious.

Although the hotel lacks air conditioning, the provided fan and open windows at night ensured we had a comfortable night's sleep. The beds were very comfortable as well.

Totally enjoyed my 2 days spent here in mid-June, and would not consider staying anywhere else the next time I visit Hallstatt.

Though a tiny town, this is the perfect location if you arrive by train/ferry boat. Hotel is barely a minute walk away. It’s located on Marktplatz, so you see the square every time you enter/exit hotel. And you have the beautiful lake bordering the hotel on the other side.

Not sure of front desk hours, but when I was there felt they were open from 8:00-22:00. During stay dealt mainly with Abhi who was welcoming and as helpful as anyone could possibly be. Checkin and checkout process was easy. Would note 2nd ferry boat in morning leaves at 8:15, so good idea to speak with front desk about it the night before.

Hotel is not inexpensive, but thought it was well worth it from a comfort and convenience standpoint. Cost varies significantly by type of room, so hopefully you can find the right trade off level for you.

The hotel was renovated about 10 years ago. My room was well furnished and had all the amenities I look for and more, other than no AC. Found the bed/pillows comfortable and had 2 great nights of sleep.

The beautiful hotel is an ideal location in the centre of the town and close to the boat station. It has fantastic views over the lake from the rooms and restaurant terrace overlooking the lake. We had a junior suite with the largest terrace, probably the best room in the hotel for a two night stay. The views and experience were magnificent.

Unfortunately we did not have the best experience at dinner. We booked a table in the hotel for the 2nd of our 2 night stay and looked forward to it.
However, after an initial friendly welcome into the restaurant, the service went downhill after that. We were never checked on to ask if we wanted anything and had to chase the dessert menu. Not once did they come to check if we wanted more drink, if the meal was ok etc so finally we just got up and left. We then asked at the bar for a hot chocolate to take to the room and were told no, the bar closes at 9.00pm but it was only 8.10pm at that point! Begrudgingly they made us a hot chocolate.

Even though it was only 7.45pm, they were laying up the breakfast tables in the dining room room and you felt like you were in the way. All the staff were focusing on that and were not bothered about the diners. My sister in law did complain to the reception staff after the meal and we were told to email the hotel which we did but after 2 weeks have had no reply. In fairness, the staff at breakfast were very good indeed. Apparently, other diners complained also.

Considering the cost of the hotel and as my sister in law had travelled from the States to make a special visit to Hallstatt which was on her bucket list, the meal and service were a huge disappointment compared to the beautiful location of the hotel itself.

We were visiting Austria for a week, firstly in Vienna, then down to Salzburg and finally Hallstatt. Throughout the week, the service and food in hotels and restaurants and cafes had been exceptional but this was not the same
in Hallstatt.

While the hotel is very nice and a great location we were told after check-out at 11am we could leave our bags secured in reception and upon our return they would call the shuttle to return us to the parking lot.
We returned at 12:30 only to find a sign in reception that they were closed 12-3, which was not relayed to us when we left them, and there sat out luggage and others bags out in the open room with absolutely no security. We were unable to find an employee except for down in the restaurant and they had no idea who or how to call. We walked over to Heritage House Hotel who did have employees manning the desk and the manager called the shuttle for us which saved our evening plans in Venice.

Dear guest, Yes, it is correct that our reception is currently closed from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. It is incorrect that your luggage was left unattended. We have video surveillance and can also control this from the offices. There is also a back office next to the reception, which is available to our guests during this period. Your luggage was never in danger.

Our booking (bed&breakfast) was not even in the hotel’s system although we had already paid a month ago and also had the booking confirmation. For a hotel that has a small number of rooms this was unacceptable and it was purely due to inefficient hotel management. We had no other option but to stay in an apartment (not even a hotel) which is not in Hallstat but 20’ away by car. The price of the apartment was the same as the hotel’s but you can imagine that it would be a lot lower if we had booked the apartment more than a month ago as we did with the hotel. Also note that we decided to have dinner at the hotel so as to avoid further trouble and time lost but they did not even have the decency to offer it to us for free or even have a discount as a form of compensation. The only good thing they did was to show us the road to the apartment booked. Highly disappointed.

We had dinner at the lakeside restaurant of Seehotel Gruner Baum in May 2024.

Our table was on a platform extended from the hotel’s terrace. It was a cool day in late Spring. We watched the sun go down (note: it was a cloudy day, no sunset photo in case you are wondering).

It was a lovely experience to enjoy the views of Hallstatt, the lake and the mountains that I couldn’t remember too much of the food.

A white swan came to us to say “hello”!

I think the swans must have been so used to seeing tourists all the time. They didn’t disturb the guests at all.

We ordered a chicken soup and pasta dishes. The food was good and the service was great.

It was our best dining experience in Hallstatt.

We were in Hallstatt overnight with our adult daughter and chose Gruener Baum based on TA reviews. They were spot on as the hotel is in the PERFECT location for Hallstatt with gorgeous balconies and views. We had reserved a Deluxe Double with Balcony and a Superior Suite with a Balcony but they upgraded our daughter to a Suite as well. Both suites were HUGE with very elaborate bathrooms and we had the biggest balconies in the hotel which we just loved. Great for relaxing after a day of travel and touring. I will note that the furnishings are a bit dated but the bathrooms are more modern. And there is no air conditioning but they supply fans and that was fine. We ate dinner outdoors and enjoyed it and the breakfast buffet is extensive. All in all, a great place to visit and a great hotel to stay in.

The location cannot be beat. From check in with Herr Abhi to check out, the staff was very professional and caring. We booked a junior suite with a big terrace overlooking the lake. We were able to enjoy some amazing views.

We ate dinner at the terrace restaurant and had a wonderful meal and experience. Our server, we cannot remember her name, but she let us know that she was from Croatia, also she had long blue hair, was one of the best server we have ever had. Excellent attitude and personality. She was on top of everything. We could see an excellent teamwork between the staff, even though they were short that evening, because there was a large group of 30 in the main restaurant.

The only minus we have to point out is that unfortunately large groups book this hotel and that makes it a bit uncomfortable for the rest of us. They put (throw) their luggage everywhere in the entrance when they check in and when they check out. They expect the rest of us to just deal with it. The hotel needs to take control of this situation.

We went to have breakfast 20 minutes after the restaurant opened and almost all food was gone. Each table had 4-6 empty plates on them while people still eating. The cups to get a hot chocolate or cappuccino were all gone. That happened every morning we were there. The staff did as much as they could to keep up, but it was impossible.

These large groups don't care about the rest of the guests, it's just about them. This was not just at this hotel, it was everywhere we went in town. They will push through you and get in front of you as if you don't even exist.

This would be the only reason we may not return to Hallstatt. It was not a pleasant experience, whether you were taking a photo or trying to buy something. Even walking around was a challenge.

We saw signs in some restaurants saying that they only accept cash. We asked about this and were told that 80% of the businesses in Hallstaff require cash payment. This kind of tells us that they have had problems with credit cards.

We do appreciate having been to Hallstaff and hope someday the town will take control of these groups to allow other tourists to have a wonderful experience. By the signs we saw all over town, we can tell they are aware of this situation. Hopefully some day they will be able to do something about it.

Beautiful cosy hotel with the greatest scenery. Facing the lake on one side and the market place on the other side it has a lot of authenticity. You feel you are hosted in a charming house with flower vases on tables decorating the floors . With its refined food and service too, I believe it has the best location in this wonderful small city that is Hallstatt

Hello. I recently did a ver late reveiw commenting about my concerns about "stored" luggage. I see the hotel has commented on a previous review saying hat they are watched from the office. I'm not sure how that is acceptable. But to answer your question - there isn't anywhere you could lock your luggage to. I think petty thieves would be more interested in pickpocketing in the crowded street. We chose to arrive after check in and leave in the morning. Maybe it might be worth enquiring in the information centre about luggage storage. We found them very helpful. All the best! Hallstatt is beautiful but staying overnight (in our vase - a few nights) helps you enjoy it's beauty.

Dear guest, thank you for your request. There´s a good size table provided on the terrace of our Junior Suites, big enough for a drink with other guests of your group. Nevertheless we´d always recommend our unique restaurant with lakeside terrace to enjoy the perfect view with high quality food/service. Best regards SEEHOTEL GRÜNER BAUM
