My husband and I stayed at Kontoyiannis House for several days. The apartment was situated on the ground floor. It was pretty standard for a self-catering style apartment. The appeal was in the nice patio and village location. We did not get to spend much time enjoying the patio because it was too cold for most of our visit. I would love to see it in the springtime.

It was a little disconcerting to hear the cars driving by on the narrow village street just outside. You learned to peek around the corner before stepping outside the door. Once we became accustomed to the noise, we found it pretty funny.

We had internet access and satellite TV - although most of the channels were not in English. This is not a luxury establishment, but a very nice, basic accommodation for those who want to be away from the crowds and the hubbub of the city. It is close enough to drive to both Larnaca and Limassol and makes a good base of operations for exploring the country.

We have stayed in Kontoyiannis House 3 times - 2008, 2009, 2009. Why? We love the village of Kalavasos where friendly Cypriate families live; the village square where the elderly gentlemen gather during the day to drink coffee and play games; the private, sunny and pot plant-filled courtyard of the house; great fresh produce in the area, the central location of the village midway between Larnaca and Limasol, and the fact that overall, you are getting basic self catering accommodation at a good rate. I stress basic, so that your expectations are managed. And the owners are quirky. There are no instructions on arrival - John will meet you at the house and tell you what he remembers, but even he will admit he does not know how to work the TV/satellite. (Tip: the washing machine is outside by the BBQ.) Your welcome pack will always include a bottle of wine (much appreciated), a loaf of local bread, bag of grapes from the family property and sachets of instant coffee and sugar, so remember to ask John for directions to the grocery shop in the adjacent village. In summer, make sure you book with aircon, which costs extra. As for the rest, just relax

Nice place to stay to get away from it all but easy 5 min drive to the beach. Very peaceful. Villas immaculate with a brilliant patio to sit out on and enjoy food and drink

We booked this place for our silver wedding anniversary to chill out and relax. Nice house, lovely courtyard but management very lax about maintenance - we ran out of gas in the middle of cooking, which affected all the apartments and the whole hot water supply. Contacting the owners in this situation was difficult as the list of contact numbers had been overwritten so it was blurred and unreadable. One of the onwers never answered our calls, he tended to ignore messages and let the voicemail fill up; the other sometimes had to be called two or three times to get a response.

The fixtures and fittings were falling apart - my husband opened the shower curtain and the pole fell down on his head. We found it was just wedged between the walls - not even a telescopic pole. He got really fed up with trying to rehang a soaking wet curtain every time he had a shower. (I used the bath) The only thing stopping the bathroom light from falling off the wall was that one end was resting on the cabinet top. The toilet cistern was not fixed to the wall so we had to be careful when flushing as it wobbled and we were afraid it would fall and flood the floor.

Our bedroom curtain was partly hanging off the rings, it was much too small and only covered about two thirds of the window, so the guests sitting on their balcony across the courtyard could see directly onto our beds. Their balcony light shone into our room through the curtain gap so we had to keep the wardrobe door open to cover the gap, to get some privacy and sleep at night. The hinges on the wardrobe door were falling off as well. We found the dressing table was unstable as it had only three legs - the broken fourth leg was in the bedside cabinet.

It seemed if things got broken they were just dumped in odd places. We found a defunct TV concealed behind a curtain in our living room. The bracket for this TV was still sticking out of the bedroom wall. We found a defunct coffee maker shoved in the living room cupboard. Other junk was scattered around the courtyard. A piece of battening with long nails protruding was dumped on an air con box along with a collection of aluminium poles. The barbeque was heaped with plant prunings and surrounded by empty flowerpots, a childs chair dumped in the outside sink and a potentially useful outside toilet was another 'storage' area. The bin in the courtyard was full of more plant debris and building rubbish, but even though the owner inspected it, he never emptied it.

The courtyard has two shaded areas with stone arches but one of them is piled high with junk - mostly a collection of broken chairs - so no chance of using it to sit out of the sun. I found a drying rack in the junk pile that had only one rail broken so I cleaned it up and brought it back into use for us and the family upstairs.

We had two outside lights that never worked, so our neighbours helped us move our outside dining table into a lighted area for evening meals. These are just the problems we encountered in our short stay in our apartment. Maybe the others are in better condition. However the whole place needs tidying up, the junk removed, the contact numbers replaced, and all the minor repairs sorted.

The best thing about this place was that we were allowed to take our pet, or we couldn't go. The owner was nice enough to let us take him although it was a last minute decision.
The apartment was very big and comfortable and nicely decorated.
Felt like the place could do with a bit more care, as basic stuff was missing and the lady waiting for us did not give us a key so we couldn't lock. The wifi code was no where written, small details that could make the difference. Definitely value for money, with proximity to Limassol

We really enjoyed our stay here. The living quarters reminded us of a cottage, all wooden and lovely. The kitchen had all the equipment we needed to be comfortable and not go to restaurants if we didn't want to: we could prepare coffee, make toast, eggs, pasta, you name it. The rooms were spacious, the view from the patio was lovely. Oh - and really important for the kids - the wifi worked! (thought not in the bedrooms)The street was quiet and friendly and the village itself (Kalavasos) is picture-perfect and good restaurants and a couple of small supermarkets, all within easy walking distance.

The house was spacious and airy, there was a very relaxing atmosphere. Not sure if it was the thick stone walls, the overhanging vines and flowerpots everywhere which created the tranquil feel to the place. You could tell it had been a happy family house. The accommodation was basic and comfortable. The family and staff were helpful and accommodating.

The house itself is pretty and well located. It's clean and cosy! It suits well to couples or small families. BUT do not come in the middle of summer because the whole village is invated by huge cockroaches. We met a total of five in the apartment on the first day and another five during our week-long stay. They were mostly just a nuisance and came inside just to die. They weren't wandering around all the time. We slept some lights on and that kept them away mostly during the rest of our stay. The house is poisoned regularly. Apparently it's not very effective. The near by mini market has effective poison cans (Raid or the "green can", the yellow one is for others). But be aware that after poisoning you will encounter some "drunk" (from the poison) individuals who seek refuge. Such a shame because the house itself is very nice. Also Christalla and the staff will assist you if you have any problems. The village itself is beautiful and the people are the nicest! BUT I still challenge you to try this beautiful house and village. It will be worth a try. I promise! Just don't go there in July (you've been warned). Extra recommendation: Retro Tavern.

Kalavassos is a lovely and calm village. We could better now the culture of Cyprus staying in an autentical accomodation like Kontoyiannis House. The house is spacious (we were 4 adults and 1 child), the garden is really beatiful, the kitchen is very well furniched.

We stayed in Kontoyiannis house during the summer for ten days and had a lovely holiday there. The stone-built house has four flats, two downstairs and two upstairs, and they all face this beautiful courtyard, which is off the road. There are hanging vines (with grapes) and flowers throughout the courtyard, and chairs and tables for eating and relaxing. Our upstairs flat had high ceilings, a big kitchen and bedroom, and a pleasant view of the fields and hills surrounding the village. The owner Chris was very helpful in suggesting beaches, places to eat and other activities near the house. They also make their own olive oil there, from their orchard a short walk away. Will definitely be returning for a second visit.
