Detailed Reviews
Pre the pandemic we tried to visit Malta once a year for a week break. We have always stayed in the Ax hotel complex. We have settled on the Palazzo Capua for the last several stays because it gives us the comfort of a small hotel, there are only about 6 huge comfortable rooms with all the facilities of the larger AX hotels next door. What makes the Ax hotels is not the facilities or the restaurants or the rooms or even the great location (all of which are excellent) it is the staff and there are not enough nice things that you can say about them. If you want to be somewhere that is friendly and helpful and that you will feel cared for.. The Victoria or the Palace or the Palazzo depending on your style preferences and budget are an excellent choice. One we will be choosing again once we can get a flight.

This was a very special occasion for my wife and I. We were given an upgrade to the excellent Tagliaferro Suite in AX Palazzo Capua. The room was beautifully laid out and the service from the Hotel staff was superb. Such a welcoming team of staff and managers.
The facilities for this 5 star hotel were outstanding. Both with indoor and outdoor pools, a modern fitness room and hotel spa treatments, we were able to enjoy and relax and take romantic strolls on the beautiful beaches of Malta.
A special mention for the excellent catering staff and cooks at the Tabloid Restaurant. The meals were also superb. I felt obliged to give my personal compliments to the head chef and the pastry chef for their excellent work in creating something special each night.
My wife and I, would recommend this hotel to all who plan to visit Malta and just want to to experience something special.
With very fond memories

We celebrated our close family and friends wedding in this beautiful Palazzo in the middle of Sliema. The atmosphere within the palace and its beautiful surrounding balconies was magnificent! It was certainly the place for memorable pictures and special memories! Neil and the team were fantastic, they were very professional, helpful and friendly. All our guests were impressed. The suites there are also to be recommended - some of our foreign guests stayed at AX The Victoria - we will surely return.......hopefully soon!

Although our booking was originally for the Victoria Hotel, we were given a room in Palazzo Capua due to overbooking. They claimed that this room was better but I consider it a downgrade. First of all it was very cold & it took hours to get some kind of heat through an old air condition. We had to call the reception of Victoria Hotel 2-3 times to come and fix the problem with the heating. They came after a long time... Since there is no reception in the building, we had to get out on the street and go to the Victoria Hotel every time we needed something e.g. electricity adaptors... The suite that was given to us had absolutely no view. It was dark and felt like a basement. Fortunately we spent only one night there and the next morning we asked to be moved to Victoria Hotel... What a relief!

We booked a standard room at the Palace Hotel, but we were upgraded to the Palazzo Capua. There were good and bad points to the Palazzo Capua:
+ Beautiful building steeped in history and wonderfully restored (although we thought that the building's history could have been taken advantage of a little more, for example, giving details of the rooms and what they were used for)
+ Great location - close to the sea, ferries to Valletta and the bus stops. Also just next to the Palace hotel, whose facilities you can use.
+ The location felt very private - it didn't feel like a hotel; no long coridoor with hundreds of rooms, but a private staircase and halls shared by a handfull of rooms
The biggest problem with the room was with maintenance, which was poor. Just to name a few:
- There were brown stains along the bottom of the shower curtain, something very cheap and easy to rectify (after all, how much can a shower curtain cost?)
- Blinds which did not pull up, which was a shame considering the lovely weather
- Light switch coming away from the wall, again something easily rectified (just need to tighten the screws). Also, could really be a big hazard, especially for kids.
- The TV turned itself off after being on for 5 minutes. This wouldn't have been such a problem if it turned straight back on with the remote, but you had to turn it off at the mains and then turn it back on again
- Fist-sized hole in the wall for TV wires - not a big problem for us, but it looked scruffy and is dangerous, especially if with kids
Some other problems that occurred:
- Like many hotels, there were function rooms downstairs, but because this building is a lot smaller than most hotels, we could hear noise from the function rooms. At one point, someone was having a birthday party, which was quite noisy. Also, a kid from the party wondered up the staircase and walked into our room! We had just got in and so we hadn't locked the door, thankfully we were decent, but it was a bit of a shock.
- The night before our departure, the air conditioning stopped working in our bedroom, which is a big problem in such a hot country. We called reception and asked if they could send someone up. After 40 mins, no-one turned up so we called them again, and told them we wanted to go out for dinner, and would be leaving in 15 minutes. 5 minutes later, 2 scruffy men turned up and poked the air con a bit and pressed some of the buttons. After 5 mins of staring at the machine and looking puzzled, they said 'it's fixed now, just leave it'. We thought this was a bit strange but we just went out to dinner and hoped for a cool room when we got back. We returned 3 hours later to a boiling hot room. Once again, we talked to reception, telling them that we wouldn't be able to sleep in that room and had an early flight the next day. The man at the desk told us they would get someone to have a look at it but they had no spare rooms left. When we got back to the hotel room, a manager called us and told us that they would get us a room for the night, and they put us in the very lavish texture suite. It was eventually sorted out, but was a big inconvenience for us, which resulted in us not sleeping until 2.30am (as we had to pack all our stuff and move hotel rooms). Also, the word 'sorry' was not mentioned once - very slap-dash.
In summary, we were pleased to get upgraded to the Palazzo Capua - the building is absolutely beautiful and the rooms are quite nice. However, the upkeep of the rooms leaves much to be desired. One questions why they have let the room's standards fall when the problems would be SO easy to repair! A nice place to be upgraded to, but if we had paid the full price for this room, we would have been furious. The designed suites are actually cheaper than the Palazzo Cappua (believe it or not) and are 100 times better - completely modern, breath-taking views, everything maintained etc.

My wife and I decided to visit Malta recently for the first time, mainly because some friends said that they loved Malta for its history and climate-subjects we both enjoy.Consequently I contacted the Victoria Hotel in Sliema for a reservation there.Rather surprisingly,I was advised that alternatively we could stay at Palazzo Capua(5 star) next door. This was an exciting prospect because we had never before in a palace. We were warmly greeted at the Victoria by the reception staff (Charles and Eleonor) who took us to the Palazzo spending much time imparting information, aided by Dorianne(the guest relations officer) who gave expert advice in a friendly and helpful manner. The palazzo was a striking building with numerous archways ans stone columns built in the 18305 for Prince Carlo of Capua and his beautiful Irish wife Penelope. We ascended a graceful white marble staircase.Opening the door revealed a sitting room, dining room ,a large bathroom.Ascending a further short staircase revealed a large bedroom containing a 4 poster king sized bed.All these rooms were tastefully furnished in the early Victorian style. We enjoyed the all penvading atmosphere of tranquility. We attended the Victoria Hotel for meals and other facilities..these were faultless! We greatly enjoyed visiting all of Malta s remarkable historical sites, sacred places and religious heritage. Most of all we enjoyed our stay at palazzo capua enhanced by the friendly and helpful staff

We have nothing but praise for both the staff working at the Capua Palace/ Victoria Hotel and the beautiful property we were in. The staff was very friendly and helpful and always went out of their way to ensure that our stay there was one to remember. The food was delicious both in the morning and in the evening. Moreover the location is very good for those who enjoy shopping as it is just a short walk away from the Sliema shopping centre. We would definitely be returning there again.

Having previously stayed at the sister hotel The Victoria we tried the Palazzo Capua and were not disappointed. We were in The Prince Charles suite and found it to be very spacious and comfortable. The Palazzo was very quiet during our stay despite everything being fully booked and we were not disturbed by street noise or guests. Guests access the facilities in the Victoria and their other hotel The Palace and we had half board finding all meals plentiful, good choice and staff attentive, the pool facilities were very good with plenty of sun loungers. We have found all staff very helpful and pleasant and cannot do enough to make your stay enjoyable. The area is much quieter than staying on Sliema front but still only a short walk to get to the ferries, bars, shops etc. Very easy to get into Valletta either by bus or ferry. My only comments on improvement would be make the pool area no smoking, the background music around the pool can be little loud if you want to relax and listen to an audio book ( in my opinion) , the carpet in the Prince Charles Suite definitely needs a good cleaning and 1 free bottle of water left in your room would be a much better level of service than having to pay nearly 3 euros for the one provided. All in all excellent week and will return and recommend to anyone.

During check-in, I asked the concierge to give me a nice room, and boy, did he give me a nice room, a suite that was not in the Victoria Hotel proper but in the adjoining building, the Palazzo Capua, a historic structure also run by the same management. Breakfast was nice and plentifulbut somewhat monotonous after a few days of the same. The staff at the desk are all friendly and helpful, especially the perenially cheerful Charles, who seems to know all the guests by name and who really went out of his way to answer all my questions about how to get around in Malta, making dinner reservations etc., etc. A wonderful experience all in all.

We were allocated our room on arrival. As far as I am aware the hotel only has 5 rooms and they are all suites. We stayed in the Selma suite. You can check them all out by viewing them on the hotel's website.
Google "Selma suite Palazzo Capua".
There is one balcony that goes around the building. There are definite boundaries though with plants indicating where the boundary is. It's a nice place.
Thank you for your comments Mr Josling, the available Suites in our Palazzo are the King and Queen Suites. Unfortunately some sites do not feature the Suites with the actual room names hence the "Standard Suite". At this point if you can forward your email address and will get back to you with an offer?
Dear Marilyn K,
We thank you for your interest in Palazzo Capua.
With regards to your enquiry we do not promote smoking in any of our rooms, and suggest smokers to smoke outside or in their balconies.
Should you require any further information do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours Sincerely,
