We read so much about the outer non-hotel like appearance of this hotel so we were not in for a surprise when we found it. As so much was written in the reviews of this hotel about the proprietor, his knowledge of Iceland and especially his excellent cooking, we really looked forward to meeting him and an interesting overnight stay....

Like everyone else we were put off by the outside appearance of the hotel. Also by the lack of name other than "Hotel". The hardworking owners tried to explain this to us, something about the local committee refusing to let them put up the full name. However, the welcome was warm, the room warm and cosy and the food outstanding....

We stayed here as part of an Ishestar riding tour. The weather was not good so it was wonderful to be able to come into the warm and have a warm shower. I concur with most of the other reviews; it does not look like a great hotel from the outside but it is warm and the staff are friendly....

Hotel Nordurljos is not easy to find: there is a sign advertising the place on the "main" road, but no arrow pointing to the actual location. If you drive into the village from the North, turn left at the sign and start looking. When we saw what looked like something the US Navy forgot to blow up when they left...

The number one thing I want is a comfortable bed. These weren't terrible, but definitely not comfortable. The food was good, but we definitely had a different menu than the locals that didn't include the foods (or prices) they received. The people were friendly and had good stories to share. With not many options this far north, it is a...

Don't let the shabby exterior put you off - we nearly drove on thinking "it can't be here". The interior is showing its age but it remains clean, functional and quaintly charming. Our room was spacious, twin beds where we had a very comfortable sleep, en suite with shower, and modern-ish fittings. Dinner was outstanding, on this night it was...

Raufarhofn is in the back of beyond, its glory days of the herring boom have long gone, and there's not a lot to do there (it's a pity it was so misty when we were there, I'm sure we did not see it at its best). The Nordurljos really does not look up to much from the outside but don't...

We were the only people staying in the hotel on the night we arrived. This is a converted herring factory, so is slightly quirky. Its very square, and the entrance is up the steps. The room was comfortable if a little tired. The food was really good, cooked by the gentleman who runs the hotel. They are a husband &...

From the outside the hotel looks nothing much, but please go inside, you are welcomed by a lovely and friendly host. The food is the best part, the best peice of fish I have ever tasted, cooked to perfection. If I could eat here every night I would.

You come to this area of Iceland not for the drama of volcanoes, glaciers and fumaroles that is found elsewhere on the island. Raufarhöfn and surrounds has a more quiet, austere beauty accentuated by the remoteness of the location. The man who runs the hotel - Erlingur - is Mr. Raufarhöfn and is a one-stop resource for all that you...
