We stayed here on two occasions in January, split with a quick trip up to Lapland. We chose this hotel for its proximity to good transport links. Although central Helsinki is pretty compact, you can't really beat being nestled between a train station, bus interchange, and tram stops out the front.

We stayed in a Superior Family room for both stays. The price was pretty reasonable. The first room was little more spacious than the second and had a better bathroom layout, however in such a large heritage hotel, there will always be subtle variations between rooms.

We found both rooms really quiet and warm, and the beds really comfortable. Be aware that as it's such a big hotel, the hallways are quite long. We didn't mind being right up the hall, because the room was quieter, but if you have mobility issues I'd request a room near the lifts.

The breakfast was AMAZING! Such a good spread, good variety, and great quality. The only issue was that on week days it finished at 9.30am - a little early for us, but probably fine for most.

Also, the staff were the best - so very helpful! We'd especially like to mention Duty Manager Anssi läkärä, who so was extremely helpful in assisting me in resolving an issue with my Scandic points. Thank you!

Helsinki is a great city, and I would not hesitate to stay here again. Its so convenient, comfortable and well priced.

A newly renovated hotel is finally open. The building was earlier a HQ of Finnish national railway company and the history of the building is nicely still there in many details. There is an old part facing south and a new part facing inner yard and north.

I stayed at the old part on thr 4th floor. The standard room was a modern quite compact. Some noise (cars, city life) can be heard in the rooms facing south.

There were some nice details, e.g. finally you can turn the lights off with just one button. Also bathroom was decorated with quality materials.

Restaurant was not open due to covid and breakfast was a take-away buffet. Variety was ok.

I recommend to visit sauna-section as it is a mix with spa (showers) and a very modern Finnish sauna. The sauna room was painted completely black and there was a tiny original window facing inner yard. When you throw water to the stove (löyly), it got foggy by moisture and you could not see outside (or other way around). I don't know if it was designed that way or just works that way. A small nice detail, you can play your own music at the restroom by bluetooth connection.

Summary: The hotel is renovated respecting old purpose of use and is Scandic's flag ship in Helsinki

The hotel is beautiful and the location is great. Rooms were really well sized and beds comfy. Dinner at the restaurant was great and service was excellent. Some issues. Rooms are not that clean. Our carpets needed a good vacuum and clean - there were obvious food spills that had just hardened and there were some toys from a previous family under the bed. Rubbish bins inside were filthy. Toiletries (containers stuck to the walls) had run out and despite us opening these and leaving them out they weren’t replaced which would indicate very cursory daily cleans of the room. Hotel seemed very understaffed. All reception staff lovely but there was quite a queue every time to check in / ask questions. The hotel was full so Breakfast was chaotic and there was regularly a shortage of items. also worth noting the breakfast closes at 9.30qm which is quite early for a buffet - they shut the doors and you can’t get even a water after this time.

We stayed one night in a Twin Superior room. First I thought the two beds were a bummer but they were actually very comfortable motorised beds and easily moved next to each other. The room was spacious with a very high ceiling and a large bathroom. Only minuses in the room were the lack of conditioner and a slightly higher table to enjoy the room service menu.

The hotel seemed very popular around May 1st (Vappu) celebrations yet the reception flowed nicely or then we just managed to avoid the busiest hours. The dine-in menu was adapted nicely to our food allergies and the food was tasty, not outstanding.

The weakest part was the organisation of breakfast during the pandemic. The hotel asked about the preferred breakfast time beforehand but did nothing visible to limit the crowds in the buffet. Hungry people should have been obligated to keep some distance while taking food. I think this was the biggest issue during our visit and it should have been taken care of more responsibly by the hotel. Luckily we were allowed to collect our breakfast on trays and enjoy it in our own room, but this meant the food was cold by the time we got there. Furthermore, Scandic hotels usually have a good selection of gluten-free and other special dietary options on breakfast, but this was somewhat a disappointment. The bread options were scarce and I suspect this was because the special dietaries were not very clearly marked and many people kept mistaking the special table as the only one with bread. Other than these, the breakfast was very nice and fresh.

Overall, quite a luxurious experience during these difficult times.

Thank you very much for your feedback! Nice to hear that the room was to your liking eventually! Especially weekends are busy and lovely to see that people are eager to try our new hotel. This does sometimes cause rush hours in the breakfast room and it is challenging to avoid queues even though we try to remind guests to be mindful of others during these exceptional times and recommend dining during more quiet hours. Thank you for noticing the signage of the special dietary table, we do need to look into this. We take pride in having options for everyone at our breakfast buffet and the lack of signage might indeed be the reason why there were not too many options left for you.

Loved the atmosphere at Scandic Grand Central! The interior was so nice, the room was specious and tidy. We got a room in the new building in the corner with a view to the railway courtyard. Despite the location the room was really quiet. The breakfast was good and plenty. Unfortunately we apparently just seemed to choose a very busy hour, so we had to wait for croissants, milk for coffee etc. The good thing was that there was lot of different rooms and tables to choose from and people wore face masks, so it didn't feel crowded or unsafe. I would recommend this hotel for tourists that appreciate high standard and location as well as for couple staycations.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights in December 2022.

Location is great next to Grand Central station but there is no direct access between the two - you have to exit the station onto the sidewalk to get to the hotel. Grand central gives you direct access to airport trains, metro, buses and long distance trains. As it is a station lots of food options and very close to main centre of Helsinki.

The hotel is huge and the hallways very very impressive. Beautiful architecture as it was originally offices for the railway.

We booked a classic double but when we arrived at the room it was tiny. It would be perfect for one person with one bag but two of us with a number of bags for a longer stay… reception was great and we ended up paying for an upgrade in room type to a junior suite.

Size was fantastic with a lounge and desk area, bathroom has a sauna and a separate toilet to the main bathroom. The shower is the best!!!

We only had breakfast at the hotel and truthfully, wasn’t fantastic! Same options every day so no variety, the breakfast area is extremely busy and seating options limited which resulted in some people eating on lounges with plates on their laps. Bread and pastries were always low in stock as were utensils, coffee was ordinary so we actually skipped breakfast a couple of times and grabbed a local pastry even though breakfast was included in our rate.

Overall the hotel was very good. I would stay again without hesitation.

I choose the Scandic Grand on my first visit to Helsinki because of its location, which is ideal as it's right next to the main train station. This historic building was designed by renown Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and has been transformed into a contemporary hotel with a lovely lobby and landscaped courtyard, wide corridors and beautiful finishes. The restaurant provide a beautiful buffet breakfast, available on interior terrace. Guestrooms have large windows, many with views of the city and ample tile bathrooms with rain shower fixtures. I liked it so much that when I returned to Helsinki after visiting other parts of Finland I returned to stay again.

This was our 4th stay at this centrally located hotel in a beautiful historic building.

My partner had asked for an early check-in at 11:30 and our room was ready on arrival. Our superior room on the 4th floor had the best views of Rautatientori Square.

The breakfast was not at its busiest at 8:45 on Sunday morning. The food selection is wide but if you are a first-timer, it can take some time to find out what is where. We also knew where to find a quiet table. There are many separate rooms to eat your breakfast.

Our stay had excellent value for the paid senior rate of 119 euros including a Scandic TOP Level upgrade and restaurant voucher of 15 euros.

This was our third stay at this hotel with a stunning interior.

Now we booked a two-night stay in a Classic Double room. As my partner is a Scandic TOP Level member, we were upgraded to a Superior room which is a more spacious room and has bathrobes.

We have stayed in a Suite, in a Superior Plus room, and now in a Superior room. All our rooms have less than 10 sqm difference in size. So I wouldn't pay 150-200 euros more to get a little bit more space.

Also, the room category doesn't give you a guaranteed view. Now we got a courtyard view but there are superior rooms also to other directions.

On the basis of three visits, this Scandic hotel gives the worst welcome gifts to their TOP Level members. Now there was nothing. Last time there were two small marmalades wrapped inside big plastic foils. So we didn't bother to complain this time about the missing gift. Actually, it is quite annoying that guests had to insist on their gifts.

However, because of the great value for the senior rate of 119 euros per night, I cannot give this stay less than 5 stars. We got also 2 x 15 euros restaurant vouchers because of my partner's Scandic Friends status.

A warm, friendly and helpful reception made me feel welcome - so nice when you arrive close to 11 p.m. The location in direct connection with the Central station and close proximity to the city is very convenient with easy access to everything.
The conversion of the 100-year building from offices to hotel was done with great sense of style and the room was comfortable and quiet. An extra plus for the soft towels - a sense of luxury.

Hello, thank you for your question! Our "classic king" room is situated in the original side of the building, whereas the "standard king" is in the part of the building that has been constructed afterwards. The entire hotel was renovated at the same time, so all of the rooms are just as new, but the only difference is which part of the hotel they are situated in. Best regards, Front Desk
