An overnight stay at the Utter Inn was one of the truly defining moments of our recent trip to Sweden. It's entirely eccentric and altogether charming. We adored dining al fresco as the motorboats road by, causing our little lake-shack to ripple with the waves. The sunset was pure magic, and our descent into the bedroom to sleep was like crawling back inside some great, aquatic womb. So many fish paid visits to our windows! They would slide out of the yellow murk and peer through the glass at us, evincing as much wonder at our human shapes as we did at their piscine ones. We even named a few regulars; they varied in size from modest (like you'd find in a home aquarium) to substantial; we saw at least two pike that measured four feet long. Even our slumber was special; deep and restful, thanks to the gentle current of the water, rocking us like veritable babies. Peter was a superlative host, and left us with ample food for dinner and breakfast the following morning. The accommodations are rustic; in the shack, just a hot plate, a latrine, and a small cupboard. Everything is battery-powered, since there is no electricity. And the ladder that leads to the bedroom could be prohibitive for some potential visitors; it's a steep climb, and requires a bit of upper arm strength. It's hard to imagine a novelty like this in the United States; our unfortunate penchant for litigation as well as laws pertaining to liability are prohibitive. That said, with common sense, the Utter Inn is easy to navigate and poses no major perils; it's just not for everyone. My partner found the hotel on a website about Unusual Places to Stay in Sweden. Once we booked it, he was plagued with claustrophobic anxiety dreams about our upcoming stay. But once in residence, he was altogether charmed, and even enjoyed a sound sleep. The Utter Inn is whimsical, deeply strange, and wholly special.

We spent one night at Utter Inn. We thought we would be able to transport ourselves back to Västerås from the hotel but it was too far out for the small rowboat provided. Luckily we had already been to the supermarket and I don't think we missed out on too much sightseeing on land. Watching the fish through the window was cool. The water is pretty murky, but the fish swim right up to the windows and look in. Would be great if the windows were more clean - but understand this would be difficult to do at 3m below water level. It got quite windy overnight and the 'house' rocked a lot and made lots of strange noises, but the weather had calmed down by morning. Note: The ladder to the sleeping level could be a challenge for some people, especially on the way up. Overall it was an enjoyable and unique experience and 1 night was sufficient.

The Utter Inn is a floating (anchored) hotel in Lake Mälaren at Västerås in Sweden. The only thing you really need is fine weather (and maybe a bottle of wine), then it is an experience without equal for a relaxing time on your own island (well, two room beach type house on a floating platform). You are ferried to the Utter Inn on an inflatable - not big or roomy but nippy! As you (try to) step off the boat you know this will be special. There is a small deck surrounding the hotel with a table and two chairs, Ideal for sitting in the sun and watching the boats sail by and feeding the fish. Also good for dining - the simple breakfast is waiting for you in a chilled bag. You can order dinner too which is extra and consists of a rather nice takeaway delivered to your hotel (yup, that inflatable again). If you want a bit of fun there is a small inflatable and life vests provided. Paddle away to your hearts content! There is even an island to row to if you are adventurous but the currents can slow you down a bit! The bedroom is 3m down under the lake water with small but comfortable beds, and picture windows on all four sides so you can fish watch. The lake is a bit murky so fish spotting is fun as you have to be patient (sometimes). There is no electricity - There are battery powered bedside lamps, and lots of candles! Upstairs (well, rungs really) a toilet is a welcome feature, as is the gas ring. A kettle, fresh water, tea, coffee and some other stuff is provided, as are cutlery and plates/cups. No shower, or wash basin, or even mirrors! Reflect on your inner self I believe is the intention! If you want to pop to the shops you need to arrange to be picked up and ferried there and back. But why would you want to? You will be on your own paradise retreat (if the weather is good). The way to the bedroom is down a ladder in a circular tube which has a heavy trap door lid which is part of the floor in the upstairs room. Not easy to open from inside, so try it out before the boat leaves! If you leave the trap door open there is a BIG hole in the upstairs room. Good fun skirting around it to get to the loo! Lots of people come close by with boats, yachts, speedboats etc, and even the ferry comes pretty close. All friendly and waving, and causing waves which we loved as they sloshed over the decking. The Utter Inn does move with the waves so boats and wind are fun as you totter around! If you like to sit in the sun (hopefully you get some) with a glass of wine, then bring your own. Sitting in the sun, with our dinner, and a bottle of wine. Waving at the passing sailors and feeding the fish, followed by a leisurely row around your kingdom and then bed sleeping with the fishes takes some beating. I want one of my own!

I saw this hotel on a Web site of original places to stay and couldn't resist since we were going to be in Sweden over the summer. We arranged a time to meet someone a few days before and picked up something for to eat for dinner as once you are out at the Utter Inn, you cannot go back to the mainland for anything until they come and pick you up. We didn't think of it until it was too late, but beer and wine would have been nice! The ride out to the Utter Inn is less than 5 minutes. The weather was poor on the date we went, so it was a little choppy but still a lot of fun and I highly recommend this adventure. They gave us a 10 liter container of water for our stay. There is a porta potty, but that is it for luxury. Remember to bring hand sanitizer with you. The view is very nice with the city on one side and the small islands on the other. Many boats went by as well as wind surfers and were very friendly. Some even took our photos. There is a small table and 2 chairs on the deck which we brought inside for our dinner as the weather was cold and windy. The ladder down to the room was sturdy but remember to wear your shoes each time you go up and down. There were many fish that swam by the windows of the bedroom. And we fed bread to the fish in the morning which caused them to jump up out of the water. The breakfast was very good and consisted of hard boiled eggs, cheese, ham, bread, slices of cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as containers of juice and milk. I would definitely recommend ordering the breakfast which is left in a cooler with ice packs for you when they drop you off. The beds were much more comfortable than expected. We had a great night sleeping under the water. :-) The owner Peter was right on time and picked us up in a boat to bring us back to shore. A great experience and I highly recommend it.

We had an enchanting getaway at the Utter Inn, a tiny little red house plopped in the middle of a lake outside Stockholm. Staff drove us out to our little villa on a high speed inflatable, and left us with plenty of fresh water and a plentiful breakfast. Conditions are camp-like (propane stove, latrine) but the experience was unforgettable. You open a hatch and climb down a ladder to your sleeping quarters, (two twin beds) and on all four walls are panorama windows allowing you to see the little fishies outside your submerged bedroom. Incredible! They also provided us with a raft, where we rowed to our own little island. The Utter Inn is the brainchild of an artist who also has a tree house inn called the Woodpecker, and is planning a little red Swedish house on the moon!
