For many years, my guests have been enjoying pleasant stays in the traditional part of the mansion. Being out hunting all day they do not have much time to spend and a nice and practical room is of the essence. The rooms assigned to my guests this year were neither. Some of the doors were not locking tightly, some needed a jolt of force to work, and in all of the rooms there was a distinctly damp smell. The rooms themselves were quite depressing. The contrast between the spacious and serene landscape and the crammy bird cages was overwhelming. Although the two beds were only small, short and soft in the middle, it was impossible that two persons could get up and dress at the same time, let alone pack or unpack. One truly wonders how the hotel expects a married couple to have anything like a pleasent time under these circumstances. One may add that there was simply no room service, the beds remaining unmade for two days and the used towels still lying on the soiled floor in the evening, just where they were put in the morning in the hope of fresh ones. I cannot hide my embarrassment as I have been recommending the hotel. You will imagine that it took an extra effort to cheer up my guests every morning. Yxtaholm Bangladesh was one of the more pleasant similes. I am sorry to say that this is a standard for an ageing youth hostel but not for a mansion hotel charging 200 Euros a night. Your receptionist may remember the furious reaction of one of the guests who flatly refused to pay for a room representative of a wanderers' home built well back in the past century. For me as the host having asked my guests to fly in from all over Europe to spend some pleasant days of hunting in Sweden, this is a catastrophe.

Yxtaholm Castle is a fantastic scenery to enter on a beautiful day. Situated on a cape in a small lake, the buildings are surrounded by water with small foot bridges and walking paths between the different buildings. The main building is very pretty but would need some additional love on the outside from the owners (paint has fallen down from the chimneys here and there etc.) You can sit outside in the garden to have your drinks or dinner, which was really great. We stay in one of the adjacent buildings in a great room with two bedrooms and two toilets (good for families) on the top floor. Rooms were beautiful designed. Beds were comfortable. Room was clean. Overlooking part of the lake on one side and the castle entrance on the other side of the room. TV's in both bedrooms. One strange detail was that the hotel do not supply shampoo and other common details in the bathroom. Very annoying since you normally expect this to be available and do not bring your own. Penny wise and pound foolish in my mind... There is a SPA in a separate building. There were no time slots available when we stayed there so I can not comment on the quality. Next to the SPA building there is a sauna house including a sauna (shared by both men and women), showers, a relaxation room and an outside jacuzzi. There is also a small dock where you can dive into the lake. We thought this building was great, you can sit outside in the nice jacuzzi and overlook the lake. But the maintenance of this house has to be improved. There were loose tilings in the shower and the sauna had an unpleasant smell from the floors. The refrigerators with refreshments were empty. Easy and inexpensive to fix if you had a management that cared. We were only here on Yxtaholm for one night but the impression I would guess is valid for longer stays. Our main objection was the lack of staff training and the poor hotel management. This castle have great potential through its beautiful setting and buildings. But you have to educate your staff so they can release the potential of the hotel to its customers. When we arrived we received absolutely no information at all except for the location of the room. No information or presentation of the hotel, the facilities, the food, location of things etc. So don't expect a proactive introduction, if you want to know something, ask. On the good side, the staff were all very friendly and helpful when you did ask them something. You get the felling they really want to help, it is just a matter of training so they know what to say. For example there was no presentation of the food (except for a paper leaflet lying on the table) or the wine. When asked about the wine, you noticed the poor girl had no idea what to say. There was a impressive cheese platter but no signs what the different cheese actually was. What a shame. We knew by reading on the internet in advance that the castle have a very impressive collection of Calvados. Not one word about this on site. Basically, very basic knowledge about what was or could be served. That was a real disappointment, I would guess a lot of people like us come here with great expectations on the food and beverages. The food (set menu, could not be changed) was a very pleasant experience and also the matched wine package was a winner, but for us food and wine lovers, one expect more knowledge about what they actually serve you and the ability to discuss and be guided through the experience. All this being said, we still really enjoyed our stay here and warmly recommend it. I think it is just a matter of time before staff get the training they need. When they do, I think this place will be a real winner.

Stayed for a one night business trip, including dinner. Old and atmospheric building set in lakeside surrounds. Quite tranquil and pleasant. Mind you I was disappointed the bicycles for loan to cycle round on my last visit had disappeared. Rooms are interesting but a touch cramped. Good flat screen TV but no free wifi. Powerful shower but no bath and soap in a wall dispenser which I hate. Service was good, very attentive at dinner. I enjoyed the set menu and wines even though for some bizarre reason there was a rhubarb theme. At £90/night I thought it was OK value. Although the surroundings are beautiful it was a bit featureless and I think more than a couple of nights there and I would need to escape.

Built in 1753, Yxtaholms Castle is a real treat for visitors to Sweden and Swedish residents alike. It is set in one of Sweden's most naturally beautiful areas, on an island in the tranquil, forested lake called Yxtasjön. The area is quite remote, there is nothing within walking distance of this sprawling country estate, but you can drive about 3 km to the cozy town of Flen for conveniences. Nyköping is about 50 km away, and Eskilstuna, Katrineholm and Strängnäs are a little closer (Flen is kind of in the middle of all of them). The cozy vacation town of Malmköping is also just a few km down the road. The country manor contains 7 different buildings, all of which contain some of the 48 rooms in the estate. We stayed in the North Wing, which was a building containing four suites, which was just perfect for us as our whole extended family could stay in what was essentially our own private building. Inside the main building is the restaurant, serving fixed menus of quite mediocre Swedish food, and upstairs you have a bar and sitting room that is quite cozy, especially this time of year when it was all decorated for Christmas. There are bikes that are free to use - definitely recommended in the summertime to explore the grounds. There are also horse stables on the premises that you can do horseback riding (extra cost), as well as taking rowboats out on the lake, doing wine tasting (extra) or other activities. The grounds of the estate are beautiful, especially in the summertime, with lakes all around, lush deciduous forests, people out rowing on the lakes - and also in the autumn when the trees turn ablaze with color. Winter can be a scene out of a storybook, with snow falling on the frozen lake outside your window, but unfortunately when we were there it was just cold and rainy so we didn't get to enjoy any of those things. You have a sauna out by the lake and walking and biking paths throughout. We had a suite, and it was surprisingly spacious, especially the bathrooms, and modern too with flat screen TV, large modern shower (some rooms had a bathtub) and wireless internet access (not in all rooms, and it is Telia Homerun, so you have to pay extra for it). There was a small desk for setting up a laptop, and the bed was reasonably comfortable. There was a separate sitting room with a sofa, and we had a bottle of champagne and a plate of chocolates and fruit in our room (might have been part of the package we ordered though, I forget). Typical Swedish wooden floors in the suites. Yxtaholm is used largely for conferences, so you'll likely see medium-sized Swedish groups here (only 48 rooms though so not huge groups), but it is a family friendly atmosphere for sure (even though we only saw a couple children). This was a lovely short getaway, it felt totally Swedish which was nice in this age of modern chain hotels, and really gave you a feeling of being on a typical Swedish countryside estate, while at the same time offering enough modern amenities to make your stay comfortable. We would definitely return to Yxtaholm, but in the summertime when it is at its most beautiful.
