Welcome to Hydrea, a historic boutique hotel Originally a private mansion built in 1803, Hydrea sits perched majestically above the heart of the vibrant Hydra port. It was restored to its former glory in 2010 and since then it has been the island's most exclusive hotel, awarded as the best historic hotel in Greece twice in a row. Our impeccable service combined with unforgettable views of the Saronic sea, and the luxurious suites offer the true Epicurean experience. Striking the perfect balance of seclusion without solitude, no other place in the port quite captures the area’s rich history while also offering quintessential luxury Greek hospitality. Highly recommend the Hydrea ‘s seaside restaurant and lounge beach the historic building Castello hydra located at kamini beach in Hydra island

After a weekend in Athens we took the Flying Cat from Piraeus to Hydra. A short stroll round the harbour brought us to the Hydrea, where we have spent a wonderful 5 days (so far). The terrace has a wonderful view across the town, but our private terrace has been the perfect location to watch the comings and goings of the buzzy town - just far enough away to be out of the hubbub, close enough to be wherever you want to be in a few minutes. The building is lovely, decorated in a soft palette throughout and beautifully furnished. Like the place, service is relaxed but on point. Breakfasts, ordered in advance but available at any time from 8.30 - 11.00, are delicious. No, there isn’t a pool, there’s limited facilities and reception isn’t available 24 hours, but who cares. This is a place for just stopping and chilling out.
Be aware that access from street level is up 35 or so fairly steep stone steps and there is stone flooring in public areas. There is a stair lift available.

Room Tip: I’m sure all rooms must be lovely, but the private terrace is very special.

This is a lovingly restored powerful merchant’s house from 1803 on a prized location overlooking the port and the main town. They’ve done it in a style that is at once grand and contemporary shabby chic. Great details, elegant, but comfortable. The communal areas, mostly a large living room and a vast terrace - each overlooking the port and town, are charming and superbly inviting. I didn’t spend much time in my room as it opened out on the communal terrace where I flopped on a sofa and lounged away half a day reading and watching the fishermen come in and out of the port on their colorful boats.

With only eight rooms spaced out through the property, it felt like my own decadent Hydra home – an intimate and relaxing hideaway. There is a genuine welcome and warm hospitality from all the staff, especially the charming and convivial hotel director.

The breakfast is a delightful, authentic experience. You feel that you are in Greece, and in a world of sameness and international standardization, this is really welcome. There is no buffet, all is prepared at your specification. Never had eggs scrambled with tomatoes, oregano, feta cheese and olive oil for breakfast? It’s a grandmothers’ homemade treat you need in your life. Be sure to ask for it. The fresh yogurt and the cheese pies (tiropita) are also local beauties. Everything is top quality.

Wifi, air conditioning, hot water pressure and other essential conveniences all worked well. High quality linens. The location is right on the port, five minutes from the boat, easily accessible from everywhere in town without a lot of winding steps. Not everyone on the property speaks perfect English but with a little patience it all works just fine.

I will definitely return to this dreamy gem.

Right on the port but elevated for terrific views, this beautiful house totally charmed us. Breakfast by the local cooks Kyrias Thespina and Maria was excellent and service generally was excellent and went the extra mile

The hotel is in a fantastic location right near the port and some great swimming spots. The rooms and lovely.

However, the service was poor. A few examples include:
Every day when we left our room they would come into our room and turn the aircon off. As it was 37 degrees during the day, we wanted to come back to a cool room after being out for lunch etc. Each day we asked them to stop doing this and each day they continued.

On one occasion I had a 7.30am work call and asked to order a coffee to have while I did this call. They said they were unable to make coffee before 8am - crazy in a luxury hotel at these prices.

Every day the barista got my coffee order wrong despite ordering the same thing every day for the duration of our stay.

The girl on the front desk was quite rude and unhelpful. She claimed a few times it was just that she didn’t speak English well (which seems concerning given most of the guests staying speak English) however at other times it seemed to be clear she just wanted us to get out of the hotel each day and not ask for assistance for things like reservations for restaurants. In the end we organised things ourselves.

On one day the tour guide we had organised for 7pm had called the hotel to cancel and they had not bothered to notify us - we got to reception at 6.45 only then to find our tour was cancelled

It’s a shame as the hotel itself is lovely (however I would not recommend it for older guests or those not strong and fit to do lots of stairs - the main staircase is very steep and long - I’m in my mid 30s and found it hard to do each day in the heat. There’s no alternate access). I do hope they improve the service in future if the expect to charge the prices they do for this hotel.

What should have, and could have, been an amazing 3 days sadly was disappointing.

Arriving from the wonderful setting of Poseidon Hotel in Spetses, initially Hydrea Exclusive presents as an outstanding building in a prime location. Beautifully renovated with a touch of elegance overlooking the harbour with fantastic high ceilings and huge windows.

Sadly, the management team, Chrystolou excepted seem to lack the knack of managing such an establishment.

Many corners seem to be cut, cleaning issues (tissues from previous guests, in toilet bin), half used body lotions, wrong keys for front door, missing bath plugs, poor breakfasts, cooks day off, cleaner new, washing drying on terrace, to name a few, are met with a response as to why this occurred, however such an establishment should ensure that this doesn't happen in first place.

We were offered a reduction of 50 euros a night as recompense for our troubles, which seems a very trivial amount. Still more expensive than Poseidon and no comparison. Such a shame.

We were lucky enough to stay at the Hotel Hydrea. Loved the fact that there were no cars just donkeys and cats. We had a beautiful view of the harbor from our spacious balcony. The hotel was once home to Richard Branson and was totally enchanting. Just be aware there are steep steps to reach the entrance. The staff were all very helpful especially Despina the lovely women who served us our breakfast every morning. If and when we go back to this beautiful island there is no doubt where we will stay.

We spent a wonderful five days at this beautiful hotel. From the moment we arrived Thanos made us feel at home and spent time to tell us about the history of this beautiful establishment.
Our room was comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. The view from the balcony overlooking the harbour is something special and little out of the hustle and bustle of the town but still so part of it.

Maria and Despina prepared the breakfast every morning and served us lovely fresh orange juice, pastries and our choice of a warm breakfast.

We loved our stay and can highly recommend the Hydrea Exclusive Hospitality

The property formerly the home of a Prime Minister. It's gorgeous. Although they seem a bit short-staffed at times, because it's very small in terms of guests, it works out. Gorgeous, clean rooms and a memorable stay!

I selected this hotel based on reviews that it was the best on the island. I felt let down by inaccurate reviews. The only means of accessing the hotel was by an extremely steep staircase from the street of approximately 50 steps without a landing. There was no lift. There was a chair lift for the disabled only. This access is a serious risk factor for guests.
The hotel was rated five stars and extremely expensive but it was not serviced 24 hours as five star hotels are required. It had no pool.
The room on check was not very clean and the bathroom had half used amenities.
It was very disappointing for an expensive five star hotel.
One of the staff became became too friendly with a guest which I believed was inappropriate. The staff should be gracious and friendly but keep an appropriate distance. I believe the staff member was trying to do the right thing but was not properly trained. The problem lies with management.
I believe that the hotel has been wrongly rated as a five star hotel.

Contrary to some other reviews I read here, my wife and I thoroughly loved our four-night stay at the Hydrea, a historic mansion converted several years ago into an exotic hotel. We were wowed by the view of the harbor from our double room with a large terrace where we watched the fireworks and burning of the replica pirate ship our first night there in June. Chris was incredibly helpful and hospitable, welcoming us with Champagne the night we arrived in the midst of a huge celebration-- Hydra's version of the Fourth of July. True there are some staff who spoke little English, but they communicated with smiles and I pulled out a few Greek phrases from many trips to the islands and everything was smooth. The breakfasts were fine: no complaints there. My wife is very particular about her coffee and she says the iced cappuccino was the best she had in a month of traveling on this trip. They made it special for her and brought it up to the room every morning. The location was terrific: a short walk to the ferries and restaurants one way, and restaurants along the cliffs the other way ... plus 15-minute walk up to leave flowers at Leonard Cohen's old house. We loved Hydra and the Hydrea and are already planning our return next year.
