Ilion hotel was a pleasant surprise. Its location is perfect for sightseeing. All major sites of interest are within walking distance, so we never used the metro which, by the way, was only few steps away. Rooms were clean and tidy. We 've really enjoyed the balcony with a view to Lycabettus Hill. Free wi-fi in the room worked very...

I stayed in the hotel for a week in July / August 2011. I was positively impressed by the cleanliness of my room, and the helpfulness of the staff. There was also a full choice for the breakfast buffet. I had been concerned about the hotel before travelling, having read some of the comments on this website. Omonia Square is...

Close to the center of everything we wanted to see. Easy to get to from airport - even at 11.00 at night! Cutest elevator (but not the smallest we were to find on our trip). At least there was one! Staff looked after our daughter who arrived very early in the morning. Lovely breakfast with friendly staff. Both our rooms...

As we found out there are many hotels available in Athens but this one looked good on the net. We were disappointed. The rooms were very old and not very clean. The floor we were on was not even lit up and we had to ask for them to turn on the lights. the internet access was poor but got...

We stayed at this hotel before and after visiting some Greek islands. The first room was rather dark and depressing, with a rather old ensuite bathroom. The second room was much better and the bathroom had been remodelled. The decor of the rooms was not appealing but considering the great location, close to Omonia square and to the subway station,...

Being so conveniently located, we stayed here, because it was the first place we saw and we were very tired and hot. It is comfortable and the breakfast was delicious, but since it is so very old, many items are broken including bathroom door, toilet and sink (leaks). We also saw roaches. The center Omonia Square is 1 block away...

We stayed at Ilion hotel twice, 3 days before going to Santorini and 1 night on our return and we were very pleased. The hotel is centrally located only 2 minutes walk from metro station and a short walk to Plaka and Acropolis. Rooms were very clean, spacious enough and well equipped. Free internet! Buffet breakfast was generous and of...

When needing a hotel that offers reasonably priced rooms that are clean and secure, a hotel that is a short walk from most of Athens sights and business district, Hotel Ilion is the answer. Staff are friendly and a great example of the "filoxenia" that Greece is famous for. Omonia is right next door which gives access to the Athens...

This is a good/ok hotel to spend a few nights. The staff is friendly, the room is decent and not too small and the breakfast is ok. It's also clean enough - not very clean, but not dirty either. The area is a little bit frightening but nothing bad happened to us. During daytime everything is ok, but after dark...

Staying in Omonia

Neighbourhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.

“Don't stay in Omonia. Buy a book about Greece and familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods before booking. Monstraki is a nice area. We changed hotels to Airotel Alexandros in a different neighborhood which was great. This hotel was farther from the center of athens near the US embassy. It requires a metro ride into other areas but it was great.”
