Do not be fooled by the photos. This place is somewhat jaded. Our room needed a refresh. And they are tight fisted. The complimentary water was a 330ml plastic bottle for two people to share. They said we had to pay if we wanted a second bottle. Breakfast was OK. Nothing special. Poorly lit corridors with 'invisible' steps that could easily cause a fall was also a concern. It is dangerous. We visit the area regularly but will not return to this hotel. You can get better places for similar prices. You have been warned.

This building used to be a bank; the rooms have high ceilings and plenty of charm. The fridges don't work, but the air conditioners do. Breakfast is fine. No door between sleeping area and bathroom, which is a bit odd. mattress was super comfortable. I felt quite safe. Front desk should always have someone present, but often it's unattended. Need more staff. But had a nice stay.

A quirky hotel in a fantastic location in a lovely town. Formerly a bank. A great mix of old and new. The staff are lovely. I would highly recommend both the hotel and the town/city for a few days and nights when in northern Portugal. The Portuguese are a very warm and friendly people in my experience and I love travelling around their beautiful country.

We were only able to stay one night here, but will return on our next trip! There are only 12 rooms, all large , spotless, with comfortable beds, beautiful bathrooms, good toiletries. The staff is amazing! The young girl, who was born in Guimaraes, at reception (I am so sorry I can't find her name) is so helpful and just delightful! Jose, the manager, is also very nice and accommodating. They all went out of their to make us feel right at home in their hotel .
A huge, wonderful breakfast and beer, wine, water in the minibar are included in the rate.
The hotel, housed in an old bank, is perfectly located for walking around Guimaraes, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The building is classified recovering an old bank, it is nicely redone with important details that have to be taken care: 1)urgently install double windows inside, we were in the suite of the last floor and could not sleep with the noise of the cars in the stone road below; 2) change the dreadfull paintings in the rooms maybe for photos like in the lobby; 3) include more floor and bedside lamps in the rooms; 4) more liberty to the reception staff to great unsatisfied guests with some king of attention and not excuses, specially when the room booked directly is more expensive than through Booking .The bed was very nice and so was the staff

Stayed for 2nights on tour. Untrained staff, no idea of customer service. Phoned reception 4 times Re finding a power point, was told one was near the bedhead not true. Then they said they had been to my room 3 times ... when I had phoned their switch showed another room and they were saying that was my problem, power point was located under a recess on the desk.
Asked for bottled water and was told there should be some in the room when I said there wasn't, the receptionist said I would have to pay for a bottle of water.
Hotel confusing layout, lifts, but still had to use stairs, auto lighting in hallways and steps that were dangerous as they came on too late to show the way.
Very cold atmosphere, no warmth or welcome.

This was a super place to have a quick overnight, would have loved to stay longer, but just before starting the Camino it was lovely! Staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and breakfast is great. The room was a bit odd (if sharing w/someone) as there is no door to the bathroom which is pretty open, so a bit awkward. Other than that, all fine.

I rate this a 5 because the location is perfect (50 meters from the old town) and the breakfast is excellent for a boutique hotel. Above all, price/quality it's a very good deal. The rooms are modern but a bit outdated. Rooms without a view have ... no view. However, no noise at all.

Dear Mr. Filippo We regret that TripAdvisor allows someone who has not stayed at the hotel to comment on it. About this, and given that this platform is read by many people, we have to inform that this gentleman has never been guest at the hotel, and all that has been said is a lie. Best regards

We come to Guimaraes every few months and usually stay in an air bnb which are all lovely and really clean and new in these lovely old buildings though had walked past the Emaj so many times and liked the idea of it being an old bank that we booked here. Somehow all the reviews are pretty good which is bizarre.

The lobby is nice though only 1 young very inexperienced staff member was present in the whole hotel. We checked in and headed for the room. Immediately we were greeted with a dank smell, the room was dark and felt unwelcoming. We had a look around and knew something was wrong. There was mould all over the shower and floor, the lamp didn't have a plug only a cord, the paint on the walls was marked and all the signs and menus etc were printed on hand torn scrumpled paper. The mini bar was empty also. I am guessing they built this a few years ago then didn't want to employ staff for maintenance, house keeping and reception so the hotel just falls into decay while the girl who's first job it is is scared to say anything as she fears losing her job.

We were shown a few other rooms only to find the same disregard had been applied. We were not going to stay in this hotel.
It felt like a backpackers hostel only with fancy beds and a nice lobby.

This is when things became more interesting. The young girl had to call her manager who then flat out refused to refund us, was completely in apologetic and rude to us and her. We then called booking.com who tried to resolve the matter though even they ran into problems. They were only able to refund us 25€ out of kindness and nothing to do with the hotel. We are still fighting this now and dealing with the European consumer protection though I feel not much may come of that. At least I can warn others of this before they too are trapped.

We found another hotel around the corner which was night and day compared to the welcome we received plus the rooms and service were impeccable. See my other reviews...

I hope that the Emaj actually take this as a sign to take action and not just pass it off as a disgruntled customer.

Enjoy Guimaraes its lovely!
