As with all recent reviews, we had a fantastic stay at this hotel. We had changed from our original hotel which had received bad reviews since reopening after lockdown, and we were extremely glad we had changed.

From our welcome by the reception staff, the bar/restaurant staff, and room service team, everyone was so pleasant, and seemed genuinely glad to have British visitors back.

The Golden Residence is further out of the centre of Funchal, but that isn't a problem as there are frequent buses from right outside the hotel, or from the main road at the back of the block C, at a cost of eu1.95 per trip. However, it has an excellent location, with block A in which we stayed overlooking the sea from the cliff top, with no other buildings to spoil the view.

Our room was a very good size, and also contained a small kitchenette hidden behind folding doors, although we only used the fridge and kettle. The "side sea view" was almost a full sea view, but as rooms in this block shared a balcony, the divider would mean that roughly half the rooms may not have such a good sea view.

We stayed on a breakfast only basis, and found the breakfast buffet excellent. Covid precautions included wearing masks whilst moving around the restaurant, and using a glove to handle the utensils.

We found a number of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and as mentioned, catching a bus was no problem to get to restaurants further afield.

It was also really easy to find a sunbed, either around the pool or in the grassed area overlooking the sea - we never had a problem, even after we had been out until mid-afternoon.

Thank you to everyone at the hotel for making our first trip abroad for 18 months such a good one, and we wish you every success for the future.

After the Covid-related events of early 2020, we were obviously a little nervous about being one of the first to travel overseas from the UK, especially as the travel company we'd booked with had given up any pretence of providing an update on the status of our holiday. 

We needn't have worried. Even before we arrived, I contacted the hotel for some assurances regarding the safety measures they had in place, & they obliged with the information I needed to hear!

Once at the hotel, the service, the attentiveness, the friendliness were all first class. Granted, the hotel was not as full as they would've liked it to be, but I'm convinced the service levels would not have dipped under other circumstances.

Special mention must go to Elsa, who provided sustenance in the form of some fantastic lunches., with good humour & a smile (from behind the mask of course!). 

The whole team deserves credit for working together & making some exceptional memories for my family. 

What else is there to say? A fantastic location with great views, a shopping centre only 10 minutes walk away with a number of fairly affordable restaurants nearby too (Casa Italia for Italian food, & Hoyo Hoyo if you've never tried food from Mozambique, are exceptional).

You can obviously take a bus to Funchal town itself, but a cab will only cost around 10-11 euros anyway. 

A most relaxing time & wonderful holiday - thank you Golden Residence!

We stayed here for 2 weeks and can honestly say it was one of the cleanest resort hotels that we have stayed in. The place was being constantly cleaned to a very high standard.
The indoor and out door pool areas are great. There is no fighting for sunbeds and we arrived at the outdoor pool at all stages of the day and had no problem getting beds at any time. While it got busy at times with kids, it never felt over run or out of control. There is no music blasting at any time and this added to the sense of serenity.
Breakfast was always excelent with plenty of choices. My daughter is gluten intollerant and they had a basket with breads, cakes and biscuits for her every morning. A special word also for Carla who made omlettes to order every second day. They were excellent.
My daughter also uses a wheelchair and there is no doubt that travelling with a wheelchair user is difficult. This hotel even though it is big and set over three buidings still managed to make it incredibly accessible. There were wide doors everywhere, adapted rooms and bathrooms and even a nice slow ramp into both of the pools. As i said travelling with a wheelchair is not easy but when these things are in place, it really makes the experience so much better. You can focus on the holiday rather than the obstacles.
You can always judge a hotel best when you see how they deal with any issues that you may have. We did have one issue early on with one of the beds. They couldn't have dealt with it any better. I must compliment the desk manager (I should have remembered her name) who dealt with this issue so promptly and efficiently. She saw the issue, saw the solution and put it into practice immediately. We honestly couldn't have asked for more.
It was laso good to see that the general manger was very present around the hotel, it alwayhs adds assurance that there is pride in the place.
I can't reccomend the hotel highly enough and have already reccomended it to friends and family who are booking as we speak.

We just come back yesterday from 11 days here, we felt at home from the moment we walked in.
They have everything in place with covid and very professional about it as well.
Hotel is absolutely spotless
Stunning location
Lovely rooms
Plenty of delicious food
And spent half days just sitting outside admiring the views over the Atlantic, and to the mountain region
And the staff made the holiday for us, so helpful and always happy
Bus stop outside €1.95 everywhere
Lovely walks around the area

The rooms in B block were huge and obviously designed to be suitable for wheelchairs (not needed for us). We had an unexpected well supplied kitchen area, dining/living room, balcony and large bedroom with en-suite good bathroom. The buffet was always fresh and with good choice, breakfast (included) was very good. Indoor and outdoor pools spotless, with ramp for disabled access. Bus to town centre was 10metres from the door and shopping centre 10 minutes away with lift access in adjacent block.

Thank you very much for a great stay.
The hotel staff were very nice and helpful, they upgraded our room upon arrival (without us asking) meaning we had a panoramic sea view. Room was clean and spacious.
Location is ideal as it is easy to get the bus into Funchal (20-30mins including wait) and it is a 5 minute walk from the sea as well as the amazing lido.
Food was good - breakfast selection impressive and we had the bbq dinner which was very atmospheric and lots of good food on offer.
Everything was very covid secure including masks around the hotel so we felt safe.
Would definitely return.

We booked a seven-night stay at the Golden Residence Hotel in Funchal, Madeira, from August 31st to 7th September 2023, primarily because of the extensive spa services that were advertised on the EasyJet Holidays website. The hotel is nice in most areas, but it can be tiresome having to move between the blocks and the lifts are quite slow. The breakfast has good options but some of the quality of the items was low for a 4 star hotel. We were also surprised you had to book a specific time slot for breakfast.

Upon arrival, we were told the spa was open from 7 am to 9 pm. However, on September 1st, when we tried to access it at 4 pm, we were denied access due to unannounced maintenance. The reception informed us it would only be open from 5:30 pm to 9 pm for the following week.

We also found the steam room was not due to be fixed during our stay and the indoor and outdoor pool were cold, contradicting Easyjet's website information. The spa was crowded during the reduced hours. Our frustration peaked when we visited the spa again (when we were told the renovations were complete), only to find the entire area covered in dust sheets, with maintenance personnel carrying out extensive renovation work, including the changing rooms and spa shower, whilst customers were present in the facilities. We had also looked forward to booking a spa treatment during our stay, but due to these issues we felt there was no way we would be able to relax and enjoy treatments.

There were also some strange charges within the hotel, charge for use of the room safe, charge for use of the lockers in the spa (?). We were only given a pool towel each which we had to exchange daily from 12pm. If you lost one of these towels, there was a risk o a charge.

The lack of notice about reduced spa hours and misleading information from EasyJet greatly affected our holiday experience. Additionally, our room's faulty air conditioning caused discomfort and restless nights.

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us. Further to your comment we would like to clarify about our breakfast slot is so that we can provide quality service and customers don't have to wait, so that customers can have a good breakfast service without too many people. The works in the spa were a case of urgent maintenance repair works to be conducted hence why we had no time to advise TO in advance. The emergency was a leaking problem in the SPA ceiling, that suddenly was in 3 points and we had to intervein immediately due to security reasons Please note that during the day usually there are no guests around and this was the best commitment we could do in order to fix the problem and still have guests served with massages and all spa facilities. The guests were informed about this works and special schedule on the lifts. As informed the spa and all it’s facilities were open daily from 17h30. There were no other works in steam room or other facilities. Also would like to inform that there are and never was any charges for lockers in SPA. We have just returned from a lovely week at this excellent hotel.
The hotel has 2 buildings facing each other. We stayed in 'C' block, where the
restaurant, pool and outdoor seating areas are. It was a lovely, spacious room with a side sea view and also a view of a banana plantation from the balcony and it was very quiet to sit and have a glass of wine on! Fridge is in the room together with a kettle, which was welcome. A short walk away you will find an excellent shopping centre; The Forum which has some great shops and a very good supermarket called 'Pingo Docce' with even a small cafe attached.
Bus stop is right outside the hotel and 1.95 Euros will take you into the centre of Funchal (bus passes also available).
The staff were very polite and helpful and especially Liliana in the restaurant and
Gonzalo on reception, they are a credit to the hotel. The garden area is especially
lovely & peaceful, with amazing views of the sea. Also, we had a massage in the Spa and it was excellent, well worth the money. The lady who did the massage is called Nidia and she did an
excellent job. Food is very good here and the dinner package they do for 4 nights
is very reasonable as for 3 courses & a half a bottle of wine each it is only 22 euros
a head!! Excellent choice too. We would definitely stay at Golden Residence again!

Lovely hotel. Very clean. Good breakfast & nice to sit outside. Bedroom was large room with lovely walk in shower. My only cryptic was the towels in the bathroom are very small not even bath size more slightly bigger than a hand towel the pool towels were a better size.

The gardener is a lovely man to chat to & could talk about all the plants/flowers. The gardens are a credit to him.

The pool area is clean & well kept & lovely to have a drink delivered to your sun bed by Elsa very polite helpful lady.

Location is good with stunning ocean views but we found it was a long walk to the lido area in the evening for the bars/restaurants so used taxis which cost between 8-10 euros.

Brilliant forum shopping centre just over the road from the hotel.

All in all had a g8 hol.

From arrival to departure, the staff at the Golden Residence were fantastic, their customer service was excellent, I felt relaxed and happy around them.
The hotel itself is in a great location with easy access to the centre of Funchal by the No.2 bus which is located just outside the hotel and also a 10-minute walk to the supermarket and shopping centre. You are also within a short distance to the nearest beach, walk down some stairs, through the mountain and you are on the pebble beach.
i stayed in a double room which was a good size room for myself and the bathroom was very spacious. There was a mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, enough plug sockets and a good tv. The rest of my family stayed in an apartment room which would be great for families as the bedroom is separate to the lounge and kitchen area.
I stayed on half board and the food was great. There was always a good selection for both breakfast and dinner, with meals changing every night. Also the cocktails were great as well as the hot chocolate.
I had such a great time at this hotel that I will be returning to Madeira as I was not able to do everything I wanted to see and do on this visit, and I will definitely return to the Golden Residence due to the great staff and location.

Hi - there are two separate buses (number 1&2) - no. 1 leaves from the top of the hotel and no. 2 from the bottom. It takes around 15-20 mins depending on traffic and they are extremely frequent and cheap (1.95 euros per journey). We only tended to use taxis when the bus was full and they were around 12 euros each way. There are LOADS of taxis in Maderia! Sorry never done Uber
