Hotel Allegro (adults only) was a great choice. We liked the hotel, it was very clean, the rooms were simpler but very bright, clean, with a balcony and a seating area. The rooms were very quiet, no noise. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, very tasty. I must praise the very nice staff. The hotel is in a good location, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, bus stop is a few dozen meters from the hotel. We were upstairs and the ocean view was enchanting. Despite the fact that certain government regulations were in force at the time of our stay, we felt very comfortable here.
We visited in November 2020, covid and off season combined made it very quiet, but also very safe. The building is old but has clearly been renovated in a modern minimalist approach. Everything worked well. The sea views are very pleasant and each day we would sit out on the balcony to watch the sunset. Breakfast was excellent. Plenty of variety, lots of space (so it was safe) and a pleasant setting. The location is perfect for the Lido. You can easily walk into Funchal downtown. In one direction you walk for maybe 10 minutes and you are at Reid’s, walk 15 minutes in the other direction and you are at a shopping centre. In between are all sorts of restaurants from Mozambique to Madeira and everything in between. The rooftop bar of the hotel has a spectacular vista. The entire hotel is spotlessly clean. The highlight would be the staff. Front desk, cleaners, breakfast room and bar staff are all super friendly and helpful. Your stay will be a pleasure.…
We spent the first night in a standard double and the first thing next morning, we upgraded to a junior suite for 20 euros a night extra. You could not swing a cat in the standard double room ( not that I make a habit of swinging cats around ) We went down for breakfast on the first morning and it was awful. Everything was cold, even the hot drinks were cold. We tried again the next morning with the same result and gave up after that and went out to street cafe's after that. The staff were friendly and the hotel was clean.
Just spent 10 nights (reduced to 8 nights due to the ongoing COVID19 issues) at this hotel. Although it was a generally positive stay, I wasn't bowled over by the place. Starting with the positives, and the location is excellent. An easy walk into Funchal (maybe 25 minutes or so) and loads of places to eat and drink in the immediate vicinity. Nearly everywhere was open as well which was a bonus. Breakfast was a decent spread and worth getting up for. Didn't eat on an evening apart from room service the first night when isolating awaiting test result, that was ok. The pool area is a nice place to relax when the weather permits. The staff were, in the main, friendly and helpful. Working under difficult conditions can't be easy. A lovely young lady who checked me in was very polite. Great views from the room balcony and rooftop bar, and appreciated being allocated a back facing room which meant uninterrupted views both ways. All very Covid secure so no complaints in that respect. As others have said, the rooms are pretty basic and compact. Functional at best, with a very pokey bathroom size and a small balcony. I was solo but 2 people with 2 suitcases would mean not much space at all. The wi-fi was so hit and miss. It's a first world problem but particularly out by the pool it would just constantly cut out; not ideal when trying to listen to music (and my mobile data wasn't working either for some reason) The rooftop bar was nice but very exposed to the elements, probably be a nicer spot in the summer months. It's a shame it's not open during the day when the weather is better. Maybe it's a seasonal thing or staffing levels perhaps? Either way when the sun is shining it would be a nice option to be able to sit up there with a beer. The pool was freezing, only saw 1 person in it in the 8 nights I was there. Maybe not enough demand to have it heated or not cost effective? Either way it's nice to lounge around but you have to be brave to get in. Found a couple of the staff members could be a little frosty at times. All in all a bit of a mixed bag but I'm still appreciative of their hospitality during such a bad time for the world. I'd give it 3.5/5 if that we're possible but I think it's closer to 4/5 than 3/5, hence the rounding up. Although I wouldn't be averse to staying here again if the deal was right, I feel there are likely better 4* options at a similar price point and would probably explore those options first should I visit Madeira again in the future.…
Great stay here, the place was lovely, we decided to go half board as we were not sure on what restaurants would be open due to Covid but we were not disappointed. The food was lovely with plenty of choice. Ideally situated, 30 min or so walk into Funchal, and the lido area is lovely place to stay, better than in the town I thought. Staff are a real credit, Very friendly. Highly recommended
