From the moment we arrived, we felt well looked after by the staff. We came in on an early flight, so we knew there would be a long wait for our room, but we were delighted to be greeted with a glass of cool juice while we checked in, our luggage and coats were whisked away and we were directed to the poolside cafe with a voucher for a restorative cuppa, which was exactly what we needed. We had booked a sea view and we loved the room on the 16th floor, which had a generously sized bathroom and plenty of storage and seating. The fridge contained some complementary water and soft drinks, and there was an initial tray of tea/coffee, and a kettle, however there is a charge if you ask for refills.

We hadn't visited Madeira before so we booked half board to make life easier. Breakfast and dinner were both buffet style. We like an early breakfast and the choice of food on offer was excellent - many different types of bread rolls, little cakes, croissants, toast, fresh fruit and juices, cold meats and cheese, cooked breakfasts, omelettes on request and the makings of a buck's fizz. Dinner was a different theme each night (eg Portuguese, Italian, barbeque) and again, plenty of choice and excellent food. I don't really eat fish or seafood, but if you do I think you would enjoy it even more. Each night there was also a choice of soups, salads and cold desserts.

Another thing we liked is that there are a variety of places to sit outside as well as our balcony eg on loungers by the pools or in the shade on a sofa on the terrace.

The only downside to our stay was getting a bit lost to start with in the hotel - the unusual architecture means that to get to the pool you need to go down in one lift, cross over and carry on in another one, and being built on a hill means the street and reception are at level 6. And we did have to wait for lifts at busy times.

The hotel is in an excellent location, so we could walk to all the places we wanted to visit in Funchal (about 20 minutes to the cathedral for example) and use buses to go further afield.

Stayed on many occasions as a Pestana Owner at this hotel. Good location if you are fit and able to walk 20 minutes otherwise you will need the bus or inexpensive taxis to and fro into Funchal which take 5 minutes for around €5. Dining in the hotel is a bit hit and miss some of the restaurants were not open. However, there are many, many restaurants to suit all pockets near the hotel. Try the Miramar Pestana Restaurant over the road on Tuesday or Saturday fantastic menu and great staff. Take a stroll to the Miramar part of the same hotel chain as the Carlton and relax in the amazing gardens, the pools maintained to a high standard by Ruben the Pool Manager, you will not find cleaner pools anywhere. The Carlton has many pools 2 inside, the large pool on the beach side is cold but the GYM pool on the 2nd floor although small a good temperature. Spa treatments are good value, the gym much improved. Ricardo and the team in the GYM (2nd) are wonderful, photo attached. Always very friendly and helpful, plenty of towels just take your room key to verify you are a guest. In January and February on our visit there were plenty of sun loungers so no need to panic in the morning to reserve! There is entertainment on most evenings and happy hour 6.00-7.00. Be aware of all the Time Share touts all over the place, DON’T sign up nowadays with so many offers you will always find a good place to stay and not tied down to one week.
The weather this year has been fantastic 14-14 days of unbroken sunshine. But it is an island of beautiful trees and flowers so always bring a brolley
If your room has a kettle then bring your own reusable water bottles, boil the water let it cool then fill your own bottles thus saving plastic
Funchal and Maderia have no facilities to recycle plastic in fact there are buying from abroad to then fill in the quarries to raise cash for the economy so the locals tell us
Everyone should visit Maderia it is beautiful, the people kind and generous. In the main part there is always a band playing lots of seating areas with amazing views. Once you are in Funchal the walking is a dream, not included any photos of the hotel as there are so many already

Just returned from 7 days at this Hotel. This was not our first choice hotel but due to the current COVID-19 situation our normal hotel was closed (Pestana Casino Park).
Nice Lobby and lovely clean airy rooms. Excellent hygiene and social distancing measures in operation throughout the hotel, the staff were very polite when reminding guests about the face mask policy.
Breakfast was not great- very poor choice and most of the time the hot food was at best only luke warm. I have put the poor choice down to a reduced menu due to Covid.
Sun beds were plentiful and the pool staff were fabulous, nothing was too much trouble, sun beds were sanitised between guests leaving and a new guest arriving.
Location of the hotel was excellent, 25min walk into the old town and restaurants or €7 in a taxi and 15 min walk in the opposite direction towards the lido and more restaurants.
Would I stay there again...... probably yes!

We booked a 7 day holiday (3rd time lucky) and selected the Pestana hotel on the group reputation (we’ve previously stayed at Pestana hotels in the Algarve), its central location and a La Carte restaurants.

We wanted to try and restrict our exposure and therefore only eat at the hotel. We booked half board with a view to paying a supplement for a La Carte dining.

We have stayed in luxurious 4/5 star hotels around the world and this hotel is definitely lacking and changes are required.

Whilst I appreciate this is a challenging time, there is no excuse for poor food.

The Good
The hotel and rooms were very clean and the staff were friendly. Fantastic chamber maid. Pool towels are changed at your room, just ask a maid to swap them before you go down to pool each day.

The pool area was really clean

The food at the Pool Bar was lovely but the service was a tad slow.

Location central for Funchal and Lido

COVID safety is taken very seriously

Recommend B&B only

The Bad
None of the a La Carte restaurants were open but we were not aware when booking.

The main buffet restaurant was truly a disaster. The COVID safety was taken seriously but hadn’t been thought through properly. You queued, hands sanitised and provided with your own tongs (all good so far) but then the buffet was split. For example, if you wanted continental then you went right, but if you wanted juice too, you had to queue again as that was on the left BONKERS!

The breakfast food wasn’t s always replenished and the juice was coloured water for most days. Oh and if you wanted tea; that would depend if there was any teabags left!!!

The evening food was no better than a transport cafe! How can a Italian night buffet not have sauces to go with pasta???!! Spaghetti bolognese is a staple; sadly missing.

We spoke to Guest services re our disappointment with the food. We were offered vouchers to use for lunch at the pool bar rather than eat any further evening meals at the hotel. Each voucher entitles you to a starter, main and dessert.

No service around the pool to order drinks

The sun beds and parasols have seen better days. Uncomfortable beds and the parasols are rusty and seized up.

We were transferred to the Carlton from the Pestana Village Garden - we only knew a couple of days previous to travelling when checking messages via Booking.com. Due to Covid 19 the Garden had been mothballed.

The Covid checks at the airport were that you had to have a swab result less than 48 hours previously or you had to have another swab and isolate until the result came through. We therefore got to experience the room service for our eveing meal, which was a bit long winded; when the food came it was luke warm but we were so hungry we ate it. We also asked for tea and coffee making facilities but these had to be requested twice before we recieved a kettle and some minimal supplies of tea and coffee but no milk so we had to request this again and finally they sent us some UHT milk.

Once our swab result came (first thing in the morning) we were able to go to breakfast which was buffet style and the food choice as quite good. However the decaf coffee kept running out of the drinks machines. There was a very good system of obtaining a pair of serving tongs for each visit to the buffet. Guest hands were sanitized regularly, masks were worn until sitting down and eating/drinking. However as each guest had their own tongs as they used them to serve multiple foods it meant that some foods were being contaminated by others e.g. vegetarian foods were being contaminated by meat and fish etc.

Dinner was also a buffet system similar to breakfast but there was no vegetarian main even though this had been booked previously - one had to be rustled up and the pasta dish became a risotto by the time it was delivered. Bottled water is offered to the tables but this is charged so be careful how much you have. The food was very tasty and there were plenty of options especially at breakfast. However as the dinner was limited we chose to eat elsewhere every night.

Our room was clean and tidy if a little dated. The bed was a bit hard for my liking but my husband slept Ok.

Stayed here for a week as our original hotel choice was not open. To have the same value we upgraded our room to junior suite, and very good it was too on the corner of the 7th floor with great sea views. The room was large, and the balcony ran the full length of it. There was 2 air con units, a safe and plenty of storage. There was a lounge area with separate furniture, the tv was on a turntable so you could watch it from the lounge or bedroom area. Incidentally plenty of channels but only news in English, there was also a separate hi fi unit. Not really much in the kitchen area other than a fridge, we requested a kettle and one was promptly sent up. The bathroom was large with a free standing bath and the shower had the option of a rain style spray. Separate sinks, two hairdryers and a lit mirror, there was even a bidet. My only real complaint was the bed, it was fairly comfy, but 2 large single beds pushed together isn’t what we want.
Breakfast was buffet style, and was changed from separate hot and cold buffets to one single buffet during our stay. The problem with this was that the hot food came first, so it was getting cold by the time you had made your other selections, and there was a lot of careful balancing going on. Very COVID safe though, you had your own tongs with which you made your selections. There was plenty of choice, we particularly enjoyed the omelettes. Two areas serving hot beverages, one outside was handy if you were having al fresco breakfast. The coffee machines worked off powder rather than bean to cup, they were very, very quick in dispensing though.
We only eat at the pool bar once and the food was fine. The main bar on an evening was a disappointment though despite the live entertainment, beverage value, service and seating wasn’t great.
The salt water swimming pool was very good, there was even a ramp for those less mobile. A good availability of sun beds and free umbrellas, and yay no music by the pool. The staff throughput the hotel were very pleasant and spoke good English. The spa treatments weren’t great value, but we used the well equipped changing rooms on our last day whilst our luggage was stored. On the eastern edge of the hotel zone it’s simple to walk into town from here, and there’s a good range of restaurants and pubs on the way. So overall though this isn’t a 5 star hotel it has many plus points, and is a great base for exploring Funchal.

Just had a week at the pestana Carlton beach club hotel, the location is perfect, plenty of good restaurants and other amenities on the doorstep, about a 10-15 minute steady walk into Funchal centre with all its cafes and shops. I really have to praise the staff at this hotel, they are so friendly and professional everything runs like clockwork. The place was spotless that includes the pool and terrace areas, there was always someone around the pool keeping things looking nice it’s very nicely landscaped and well looked after. We had no problem getting sun longers every day and reserving them with towels is frowned upon ( but as usual there are always the ones who do this anyway). We stayed bed and breakfast which was buffet style with a good choice to get your day off to a good start there was even sparking wine if that’s your fancy in a morning. They had strict protocols in place for covid hygiene which we appreciated and everyone adhered to. Our room was on the 4th floor with a large balcony and nice furniture with a great view of the pool and the ocean beyond, there is a small fridge which is concealed and blended in with rest of room furniture with water and soft drinks on arrival. The bathroom was also a nice roomy size with generous sized bath towels and toiletries. We ate on our first night in the Tavern it’s set up to look an old English pub we enjoyed what we had and reasonably priced for an hotel. Overall we had a very pleasant stay the weather was great ate out a lot, would recommend Hemingway’s restaurant 5 min walk from hotel great food and the maitre’d is hilarious. This is our second time in Madeira and we would definitely stay at the Carlton again (and I’m a very picky traveller) they really go out of their way for you to have a great stay.
There was always someone at the hotel entrance to greet you back after a day of sight seeing or to wish you good evening on your way out and there to help with luggage. One last thing if you can try and have afternoon tea at the Reid’s hotel it’s very indulgent and typically English but the views from where you sit on the balcony are beautiful and the afternoon tea itself is really amazing and for a bit more decadence add a glass of champagne to it, not cheap but a real treat as part of your holiday. I would recommend the Carlton as your base for a great stay in Funchal we booked through jet 2 holidays and I think that guarantees you a nice room with a great view.

We had booked to go to the all inclusive Pestana Ocean Bay, but it was not open. We were in the Pestana Carlton on the same terms, with a silver wrist band to identify us. Some of the bar staff were a bit sniffy at having to serve us free drinks. Understandable really; I think that this hotel is not normally all inclusive.
On the 18th floor, we had a corner room with en suite and two balconies, overlooking the pools and sea on one side, and overlooking the rear of Reid’s Hotel and a swathe of Funchal suburbia. The balconies were not particularly wide, but a small table and two chairs were accommodated.
On the first night, because we were awaiting covid clearance from the Madeira airport authorities, we were brought an electric kettle, cups, glasses, a pint of beer for me and a bottle of wine in an ice bucket for my wife. In the evening we were able to order hot food which was brought to the room. By the next morning we had received an email saying that we were covid-free and the hotel had also been advised.
The staff in the restaurant were fantastic, working under difficult covid 19 conditions. Each time we approached the buffet area, wearing our masks, our hands were sprayed with disinfectant and we were handed metal tongs with which to take our food. The tables were well spaced and they and the chair backs were disinfected each time people finished their meal. Approaching the bars for drinks was a similar arrangement.
During our first week the food was nothing special, but in the second week it improved both as to quality and variability.
There are three sets of lifts 18 to 5, 6 to 1, and a final lift to the beach level.
We are both in our eighties and had booked this holiday as a break from domestic chores. We were not disappointed.

Needs better beds and pillows - mattress was far too hard and worn and pillows extremely lumpy. Woke up with back and neck aches every day
Cleaning standard in rooms was poor - no hoovering or mopping carried out and toilet not disinfected. Air con noises and ineffective. Construction work worse than been explained by jet 2. Went on from 8:30 until 6pm Monday to Saturday with grinding and jackhammer - could not use sea view balcony and had to pay for an upgrade to move rooms. Breakfast and location good. As a regular Pestana user I will never be staying in a Pestana again until they have refused their hotels.

We have been coming to this hotel for many years and always our experience is excellent. The reception staff are welcoming and efficient. We go on a bed and breakfast basis and the breakfast is good with a varied menu and the welcome as you enter is special. Without exception all the staff in the restaurants and bars are friendly and efficient and can not do enough for you. The rooms may be a bit dated but they are kept in immaculate condition by the housekeeping staff, linen and towels are changed regularly without asking. The position of the hotel is convenient for the town and for walks to the west. We hope the current virus situation will not impact too much on the hotel and we will definitely be back.

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the bed situation in the Superior Junior Suite. We understand the importance of clarity when it comes to accommodation arrangements. I used the half board for lunch...we would eat at the pool bar...this allowed us to eat at various restaurants for dinner. We did not have alcohol at lunch...perhaps a house wine is included? Someone else may know. Try the Chalet across the street for a good, inexpensive dinner.

No restrictions on pools but no kids allowed in indoor jacuzzi or spa. Too cold outside when we were there but kids were enjoying the slightly warmer indoor pool.
