The Porto Mare Hotel comes highly recommended for its impeccable cleanliness and friendly staff, as noted by numerous guests. While the lively atmosphere is celebrated for the evening entertainment, a few reviewers have indicated it can be a bit loud. Strategically located near Funchal, the hotel's accessibility is a hit among travelers, as are the luxurious amenities including pools and gardens. Although the spacious rooms offer splendid views, a handful of guests have pointed out some noise disturbances and dated decor. Overall, the hotel is considered a great value for its offerings.

Our sea view room with large balcony overlooking the pool was perfect; room bigger than average with the most comfortable bed ever, fantastic shower and all amenities we could need including slippers and robes. The setting is perfect; beautiful gardens and pool kept spotless even after a windy night; main pool was cold which was a bit disappointing but then we discovered the indoor pool with an outdoor section was lovely and warm so we swam there.

Great astroturf tennis court which we used 4 times; racquets and balls a bit old and worn though ; they need replacing considering there is a charge!!

Bus stop right outside the hotel to reach Funchal in 15 mins - so convenient.

Staff were lovely and very accommodating and friendly.

We visited friends at the Cliff Bay and found their room size, view and hotel grounds much less attractive than ours and were really pleased with our choice for less cost.

The hotel provided a bottle of Fizz in my room on my Birthday and we hadn't even mentioned it; very thoughtful!

My only negative was the evening meal; breakfast was fine and mostly what you would expect. However the evening buffet was really inadequate both in terms of quality and choice; after 3 nights we asked the hotel to remove the half board charge and chose to eat out; so many restaurants nearby and in Funchal to choose from. The hotel were very gracious and switched our booking to B & B which suited us better.

This was a lovely relaxing break in unexpectedly sunny weather after a year without a break - would definetely return.

Dear 937153TraceyB, First of all, we would like to thank you for your fantastic feedback! We are very pleased to know that your room has exceeded your expectations, since it contributes to one of the weight factors, if we may say, of a relaxed holiday. We are also happy to hear that the settings, the gardens, the warm outside pool, the location, our Team and our gesture for your special day were really appreciated by you and turned out to be the perfect recipe for a memorable stay worthy of a 5-star review! Obrigada, it is very gratifying to be recognized! As far as dinner is concerned, we took good note of your comment and regret not having lived up to your expectations. We hope to have the opportunity to meet your expectations on a next stay. Even so, we are happy to know that it was promptly resolved, according to what it suited you better. We are looking forward to welcome you back! Best Regards, Cláudia Bettencourt, Guest Relations Team.

Porto Mare Hotel is one of 3 buildings in the same complex. We stayed in the building which housed the apartments and from looking around these apartments have more of a prominent sea view than the rooms at the hotel as the building is located nearer to the sea front. You can use all the facilities at the hotel and the buildings are connected, although it is all a bit like a rabbit warren and takes a while to find your way around. There is a road which runs down the side of the Residence, which I had read beforehand could be busy so if you are sensitive to noise then request an apartment away from the road. I did and was lucky enough to be given a quiet apartment with a sea view, which was stunning (room 3111). They are well soundproofed. The air-conditioning is a bit loud, that is my only negative point. There is a local park in front of the hotel/Residence where local people gather to do exercise etc and then there is a promenade with a variety of bars, restaurants, ice cream parlours and then there is the ocean. There are jettys which our children (age 11 and 13 ) loved jumping off. There is a life guard and they monitor how many people are there so sometimes you have to queue, there isn't a beach as such but there is a large sunbathing platform down some steps with access into the sea if you don't want to jump in! There is also a kiosk where you can hire jet skis, paddle boards, kayaks etc. We had a look around other hotels when we were here such as Cliff Bay, which is gorgeous 5 star and Reids, however with children wanting action and for a better atmosphere and for enjoying people watching we loved this location. The Forum mall is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel and there is a bus stop outside the hotel which takes you directly into Funchal in about 10 mins and the buses come every 15 mins. For a family of 4 the bus cost around 6 euros one way and a cab costs the same. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly and all the necessary Covid precautions were in place, you have to wear a mask in the hotel but not outside and the breakfast buffet is assisted so you don't help yourself to anything. The pools and gardens are amazing and very well kept, there is a lovely relaxing atmosphere and there is enough room to find privacy if you want it, with plenty of sun beds for everyone. There are 2 indoor pools and a lovely spa. My husband and I both had a wonderful massage and my daughter had her nails done, the staff were very friendly and professional. We stayed here for 10 nights and had a hire car. We explored Madeira and it is truly a wonderful place, very clean with a great climate. I did not see one bit of rubbish anywhere during my time staying here. We went to many local seafood restaurants and they were all wonderful. We also ate in the Italian hotel restaurant Il Basilico which was lovely. We will definitely return some day.

We have just returned from a wonderful 4 Weeks at the Vila Porto Mare and each and everyone was special.
From arriving at reception to leaving
on our last day could not have been more perfect. The staff whatever their job were absolutely excellent. So helpful and always with a smile ,we never met one who did not go out of there way to make your holiday special.
The hotel and facilities second to none, the food in the Atlantida restaurant was wonderful so much choice,if you could not find something to suit you then must say you are hard to please.
Every where was spotless and the decor over Christmas and New Year
was beautiful they all worked so hard to make the festivities so special.
The fireworks on New Year was outstanding and certainly a must see.
Finally must say thank you to Alexandre Esnarriaga for placing us in a room suitable for my husband who is disabled with mobility problems,he very much appreciated this.
Once again thank you to everyone at the Porto Mare for making our stay so special. We hope to return in the near future and would recommend the hotel
to family and friends.
Madeira is a beautiful Island and so are the people.

This was our first visit to the Porto Mare although we have been to other Porto bay hotels.
I can say it will not be our last visit. The standards are so high it is far better than some other 5 star hotels we have been to around the world. The service of all the staff in all areas was excellent together with the high quality furnishings of the rooms and public areas, makes this a very pleasant place to stay. The quality and variety of the foods in all the resturants was very good. Could not fault this hotel and finally one other great point is its location. Close to shops, bars and other good restaurants.
THANKYOU for making my stay so good.

Came to the Porto Mare (and infact Madeira) when our original holiday plans were ruined by the imposition of a quarantine elsewhere. It was strange having a covid test at the airport, then having to stay on site awaiting the results but once we got the all clear (after about five hours) we had a truly wonderful holiday. Everything about the way the hotel was set out made us feel completely safe - non stop cleaning, everyone wearing masks in communal areas and lots of social distancing markers. The breakfast buffet was strange at first - I'm used to helping myself but clearly this wasn't safe so the staff ensured no cross contamination or multiple touching of items. They even delivered your napkin with metal tongs! It must be a very difficult time for the hospitality industry here as elsewhere but the Porto Mare staff put us at ease with the thorough nature of their operation. The hotel itself was spotless - we loved the massive warm indoor pool and the gardens (stunning orchids) but most of all the way that in exceptional times we had an exceptionally enjoyable (and relaxing) family holiday. Obrigado

Just returned from my 4th stay at this hotel. Having tried a couple of hotels and looked at many more I consider this to be the best hotel on the island. I find this the best location, in a sun trap on the promenade, just 20 mins walk to the city with buses running every 10 minutes. The rooms are large and spacious with balconies and many have sea views. The food is top quality, the service is first rate and the hotel is spotlessly clean. There is a full programme of fitness activities and entertainment, a fully equipped gym, 2 inside and 2 outside swimming pools and jacuzzi. Suffice to say that I would never go anywhere else now.

We could not have asked for more. This hotel brand sets very high standards in a comfortable relaxed environment. It is simply beautiful. The service we received could not be faulted (I admit that I am quite picky) and everything was perfect. The staff went out of their way to ensure a seamless service delivery and did so with genuine willingness and eagerness to please guests. Despite some of the hotel being closed due to covid restrictions this did not alter our experience and there were ample facilities on hand. This is a family friendly hotel with good disabled access to all amenities. Breakfast was more than ample with a great selection and even had sparkling wine was available for you to self pour which made for a more luxurious feel. Breakfast was well managed and plates were cleared without delay.

The bar has a great inexpensive happy hour (check out their website for menu)
and the service is excellent.

There are plenty of other off site independent restaurants and bars near by all within easy walking distance.

We almost always get a car but to be honest it was so east to get around that we didn't need one. We used the hotel transfer bus (€5 each way per person) which is directly outside the terminal building and it stops right outside the hotel. If you want to get back into town the local bus costs next to nothing and has a good regular service. For us we simply walked (about 40 mins leisurely walk) into town to walk off those Mojitos and regular breakfasts!

Unusually for us, as we don't often go back to the same place, we really can’t wait to return. We can absolutely recommend this hotel and in general the Porto Mare Group

I stayed 7 nights at Porto Mare with my friend as a part of a package trip to Madeira. I enjoyed the hotel, it was clean and well maintained.

We had a double room on the top floor with a balcony and sea view. The room was quite spacious, and while it wasn’t the most modern, nothing was broken and the room was clean and well equipped. It was at the end of the corridor, which ensured quiet nights, but lot of walking in the corridor. The only thing I missed was hooks for towels and bathrobes, as in our bathroom there was just one.

The hotel itself has a really nice garden with swimming pools; shared with the two other hotels. Everything is well maintained. The Veranda bar by the pool provides snacks, drinks and light lunch; prices I considered reasonable. Outdoor swimming pools are not heated, but the pool by the spa, partially strecthing outdoors, is. We used the outdoor pool despite the quite cold water. Getting a vacant sunbed was not an issue.

Of the restaurants we only used the buffet restaurant Atlantida, which served both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was well sufficient, and I felt the buffet dinner was very good considering we were in Europe. There was a wide selection of food, especially salads and starters, as well as cakes and dessert. Allergenes, ingredients and other dietary information was sufficiently marked for my purposes. Quality of food was fine, only thing was that all warm meat was quite cooked, while I prefer medium for beef. We did not exchange the buffet dinner for coupons to be used in other restaurants of the resort, even though this would have been possible. The theme in Atlantida was different each day during our stay. Personnel was friendly and quick to take drink orders or collect used plates.

Location of the resort is within a walking distance from Funchal centre, takes maybe 30 minutes. But buses 01 and 02 stop literally by the hotel entrance, and one-way cost less than 2 €, so we used the bus as well.

My friend used the beauty services and we also visited the pools in the spa area. Nothing bad to say here, either, all clean and neat.

Overall, I was very happy with our decision to come to Porto Mare, and am willing to come back again.

This was our first ever trip to the island of Madeira and we will definitely be returning in future. This hotel has extremely helpful staff right from the cleaners to the maintenance staff, receptionists to waiters. The hotel is large enough to feel like you have lots of areas to be in and plenty to do, without it being large enough to lose its personal touches.

Our room was much larger than we expected as we only booked a standard room, bed was huge and the balcony had a nice view over the seafront area and adjacent hotel. The room was right at the end of the corridor away from the lifts but we really didn't mind as that meant the noise was minimal.

We did bed and breakfast as we like to explore other restaurants for our evening meals but we decided to stay in the hotel for their Portuguese Buffet night and we were spoilt for choice, with everything being very fresh despite being a buffet, and lots of savouries and sweet options from Portugal and around the world. Breakfast is served in the same restaurant and whilst it was a bit chaotic some mornings the food and service made up for it. Items are constantly being replenished and the staff are welcoming and helpful.

Poolside bar is open even in November and does a good selection of cocktails, as well as other alcohol, soft drinks and lunch / snacks. Very nice attentive staff here too. A word of warning, the outdoor pool with the sun loungers is not heated at all and I couldn't swim in it as it was freezing despite the weather being in the 20s with sunlight, I did hear lots of guests mention this but for me it wasn't a problem as the main indoor/outdoor pool is heated and adequate. Nice warm outdoor jacuzzi as well. If you want to book spa treatments, do it before you arrive as they are always very busy. Same goes for steam room and sauna. Plenty of room for swimming each day we were there though with no booking necessary. Pool towels provided in every room which you can exchange for new ones at anytime in the spa area. The pool team are very good at maintaining the grounds and cleaning without it disturbing you while you relax. There are a few cats that live on site that are also friendly, presumably employed as pest control.

For those who are interested in nature, there is an incredible number of different plants and flowers growing in the gardens and the grounds of the hotel. Free WiFi was strong throughout the hotel and didn't malfunction at all. There are a lot of older couples staying at this hotel and it is obvious that the entertainment caters for this, however we didn't mind at all as we were looking for a relaxing break without party animals shouting the place down and that is what we got. We did speak to a few younger couples and everyone seemed to be happy with the hotel as well. We will be back next year, thank you for everything!

This was our first trip abroad for some time due to Covid and we all enjoyed our stay. The hotel is situated in a great location with it being only a short walk into Funchal. Madeira is such a beautiful Island and it was great to be able to walk to the cable cars and other areas to see it.

The staff in the hotel are all friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The room was spacious and beds comfy which was nice. The room and hotel are starting to need a bit of work in places as others have mentioned, but we noticed that parts of the hotel whilst we were there were being painted and redone. The outside area is kept very clean and the flowers and gardens are lovely. We had a few days on the sunbeds and by the pool and the atmosphere was calm and peaceful. Possibly some new sunbeds are needed or cushions for them as they are not comfortable and you cannot stay lay on them for too long without having to move.

The food in the restaurant was lovely and hot and tasted nice. It made a wonderful change for them to not offer chips in the restaurant in the evening and instead have a variety of potato and rice options across the days. They had a good selection of hot food with items to suit every taste. The plates were hot which was great and paper napkins were provided to help you carry the plates when needed. The puddings had a nice selection and the ice cream tasted lovely. It would have been nice to have a selection of cut up fruit on plates like at breakfast during evening meal instead of just the fruit salad as a lighter pudding option. The breakfasts were good with plenty of options for hot and cold foods. I personally loved having the Madeira custard tarts for breakfast!!

The evening entertainment varied between being lovely to relax and listen to and not very good. We particularly enjoyed listening to the guitarist and singers, and the Bee Gees tribute act. The Elton John tribute act would have been good if they had turned the volume down. It was almost painful to listen to him it was that loud. Sadly many people left the entertainment that night in the middle including us as it was not a pleasant experience. The bar staff in the Portafino Bar however work incredibly hard every night to serve everyone and make sure nobody is sat without a drink.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in this lovely hotel in the beautiful Madeira. The staff all work incredibly hard, the food is lovely and the rooms spacious and comfortable. We would definitely recommend this hotel for others to stay at!!
