The NEXT Hotel is frequently commended for its cleanliness and prime location near Funchal town, with sea views that guests love. While the rooms are clean and modern, some visitors have noted issues with lighting and storage. Many guests enjoy the amenities, like the variety of pools and the rooftop bar, but feel that the atmosphere falls short, describing it as dark with repetitive music. Service is generally good, though not without occasional hiccups, and while the hotel offers value, the cost of drinks and additional charges are a downside for some.

This was my first visit to Madeira and I was travelling alone. This hotel appealed due to its location close to restaurants, some shops and a short walk into Funchal.

Compared to its sister Savoy hotels, NEXT is definitely trying to cater to a younger crowd, and for me it was excellent in many ways. I liked the ability to self check in, although the staff were keen to offer help with this and explain the hotel.

The small gym has some good equipment, towels provided and a water machine. I didn’t use the pool as it was a bit cold in January, but I liked that you could get to the sea if you wanted too.

Breakfast is really good, excellent spread of options but retains something Portugese about it without completely going bland international (some days there were pastels de nata, and the hot options included things like quesadilla).

The bed is so comfortable and I had a room with ocean view which was magical, I could watch the sun rise each day and then see the sky be fantastic in the evening. I didn’t have a problem with hearing others and my room was right next to the stairwell. The decor is amazing, really stylish in dark wood. I really felt comfortable and liked it a lot.

The room is hyped up as being very tech ready but in reality, it let itself down. The TV wall mounting prevents you from using cables to connect, and the wireless option didn’t work. The desk has handy electric points, but the lighting isn’t great for working, although it’s fantastic for setting a relaxing and chilled mood. It’s quite hard to find online information about the room and amenities, and the QR codes on a block in the room don’t work.

It’s also a bit weird that this stylish hotel doesn’t have a hairdryer, and whilst you get a kettle, fridge and plastic mugs, there’s no tea or coffee provided (I bought some Nescafé sachets and little milk cartons from the shop, and borrowed tea and sugar from breakfast).
Equally, your room gets cleaned, but no one washes/changes your glasses or mugs, and your bed is only made without sheet changes during your stay (maybe you have to ask?). There are almost no toiletries, and the single shower gel/shampoo dispenser isn’t great.
These are little things and in a sense, I don’t mind, but I wish I’d known to bring my own stuff; although given the overall price, I think they should be provided, or at very least offered somewhere on site.

I found the staff fantastic during my stay at every interaction, they were great! Obrigado!

We have just returned after spending 2 nights at the NEXT hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were really impressed with the hotel, particularly the service and the relaxing atmosphere. All staff were super friendly and keen to help. We booked an ocean view room but got upgraded to a suite. Although this kind gesture was very much appreciated and the room was really lovely, the view wasn't the best as it was on a lower floor with a lift/air conditioning tower in the way, which made quite a bit of noise, adding to the noise from the street. This didn't spoil our stay and we loved the extra luxury of the suite, but I would definitely recommend asking for a room on a higher floor. We had a look at the standard rooms and they didn't have any view at all, so I would also definitely suggest paying the extra for the ocean view. We had dinner at the Recharge restaurant and it was delicious, serving local specialities at a very reasonable price, again with great service. I would particularly recommend trying a green wine and the limpets. Breakfast was also delicious with plenty of choice, hot and cold, all self service. We spent most of our time up at the adults only rooftop Cloud bar where there's a beautiful pool and chilled out vibe. There's also a large pool on the ground floor with beautiful ocean views where children are welcome and you can swim in the sea with steps going straight into the water. The location is very convenient with lots of restaurants, bars and shops close by, and an easy 10-15 minute walk along by the sea front into the city centre. We were very sad to leave at the end of our too-short stay and will definitely return to Madeira and to the NEXT hotel.

Band new hotel, everything is refitted and new and shines. Our sea view room was smart great views with large shower and large balcony. Highlights include a great rooftop pool and bar with DJ playing chill music Friday and Saturday. Second larger pool next to the sea with sea access steps. About a 20 minute walk to the old town along the front and a nice range of bars and restaurants nearby too. Lobby bar is open 24 hours which led to some very late nights. Great mix of people young and old . The only things that reduce my rating is some staff just did not have a clue while others were exceptional such as Sabina William who got us a breakfast 40 minutes after breakfast had finished. This was probably because the hotel had only been open two weeks and clearly more training is needed. Breakfast was an average continental Buffet. Lunches were nice with a Japanese twist like tuna or salmon poke bowel as well as. Classics like burger or club sandwich but not exceptional. We eat out in the evenings and this place is well positioned for some superb restaurants either walking or a short taxi ride. Would stay here again. Funchal is consider a city break kind of place and this hotel gives a modern feel for what is often thought as an older persons location. We would come back to this hotel. Just need to work on the staff training for service for some.

Let’s start with the good stuff. The location is good, it’s a 15-20 minute walk to town, or a €7 cab ride. Just up the hill there are a number of decent restaurants, bars, and a small supermarket. The hotel is modern, with a good rooftop bar and pool, plus a good, sea level pool / bar. This has a good restaurant, where we ate at one lunchtime. The food was very good, I had the club sandwich, my wife the prawn tacos. The staff at both bars were great. Attentive and very professional . Views from the rooms on the ocean side are fantastic. The negatives are as follows. On arrival we were invited to “self check in”. I don’t expect to self check in to a 4* hotel. After shrugging my shoulders the desk staff tried to check us in via the self check in system, which didn’t work properly. The times we were given for breakfast were incorrect, resulting in us arriving one morning while the breakfast was being cleared away, luckily we managed to “grab something”. The breakfast buffet was… sorry… woeful. More akin to 1 or 2 star accommodation… definitely no 4*. In addition, the piped music was like being in a “new age disco” circa 1989… not good or conducive. In the rooms there are cups saucers, kettles etc, but no tea, coffee, sugar, milk, etc. The cleaning staff do not wash any glasses or cups you use (once you have bought your own coffee to use). In all, I think management decisions are letting this hotel down. It could be so much better.

Good value being in the centre of Funchal and having a pool and sea access.

Things to improve:
1) the buffet breakfast experience. The room needs more natural light, it needs serving staff and it needs mellow background music, not club music, which have me a hangover unwell feeling even though I wasn't unwell. The a la carte breakfast experience is so much nicer by the pool. And can end up cheaper. The orange juice at the buffet is sickly sweet, not proper orange. You need staff to help with the buffet breakfast, there was no one to ask about things. It seemed very impersonal.
2) toilet paper nasty and thin in rooms. Please change brand of this.
3) the ground floor swimming cool was cold. Can you not put solar panels somewhere to heat it? A real shame.

We stayed in room 609 which was a standard room with a sea view which was lovely but be aware there is a busy sometimes noisy road between the hotel and sea especially when sitting on your balcony, the pool and sea are accessible via a bridge from level 1 as is the Recharge restaurant.
Our room was spacious, minimalist and modern, bed was comfortable but pillows too large and soft, we requested firm pillows which were delivered when we requested from reception.
No tea or coffee are supplied so we brought our own, there is a kettle 2 mugs and teaspoons.
Cleaning of our room was requested by using the switch by the bathroom, shower was lovely and we like to thank housekeeping for a brilliant job of keeping our room spotless.
Breakfast was okay, if you want water, fried eggs or an omelette you have to ask the waiting staff. Selection of bread and pastries lovely and fresh.
Rooftop pool area and clouds bar was nice but what a shame only evening entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights the rest of the week it closed at 9pm I think they could do so much more to use this space in the evening, we would have loved to have drinks up there after dinner perhaps we are the exception.
The main pool was fantastic, clean with plenty of sun beds and parasols. You can enter the sea from here.
We loved the food selection and the fantastic staff at the Recharge restaurant especially thanks to filomia, diago, Caroline, and roberto they made our holiday with their wonderful, funny happy personality’s
Thanks for making our anniversary so wonderful.
We found the bar by the reception area not very inviting, lacking in atmosphere. I would recommend this hotel as it’s in a superb location to Funchal but remember it’s up a hill.
Hopefully we will return next year

I stayed with my girlfriend, we are 43 and 34 respectively and live in West London and are well travelled.
The hotel seemed very good value considering it’s brand, location and accommodation (judging by the photos)

Nice easy walk into central Funchal or a cheap taxi. Lots to do on the doorstep

The first day we arrived had a real “wow” factor as we were given a self catering 1 bed apt upgrade (I think because we arrived way early) so we were located away from the main building next to the lower pool and by the shore.

Generally we were very happy with all but a few small gripes:

1: I always check air con functionality, and was immediately concerned that ours was hardly blowing - even when on full, and 16 degrees (it was 26 outside) and after some fiddling we called reception and they said they’d send someone whilst we were out.
We never heard any more and the aircon stayed the same. No follow up.

2: Regarding the above comms, the hotel markets itself as a digital hotel with access to various things via an app. This was more hassle that it was worth as we needed an “access code” from reception to activate much of it, and when we called about the aircon it took us about 10 mins to even get an answer

3: wifi was good in the room (26mb up / down) but patchy at the pool outside. Surely there would be good signal in a hotel with the digital nomads theme

4: Rooftop pool and bar should be adults only.
It’s a small intimate space and a small pool, dominated by a bar
We only had the chance to visit for a few hours and it was a little spoiled by some splashy noisy young teens. It’s clearly an adult environment, so should be enforced

Despite this, accommodation was fab, bathroom as g free at with an amazing shower.

Honourable mention to 2 of the bar staff, at different bars:
Claudio on the ground floor pool was amazing and made us feel super welcome, bringing quality cocktails and great fresh food to us on our first afternoon

Nelson on the rooftop bar, was super warm
And helpful!!!

All in all, a great hotel with an amazing location!!!

Great hotel when it comes towards the location, you can walk in 10 minutes towards the centre altough its located in a hotel neighbhood. The rooms are more spacious then on the picture and i liked the fact that they have a couple of nice tech ways to deal with your room, i also loved the rain shower and the balcony. The 40eur/night we paid was really cheap for the season, but i concider this hotel much more worth like 100/eur night. The rooftop hotel bar is quite nice, altough its mainly about the bar and not much about the pool, then the downstairs pool is quite small to be honest (does fit like 10 people orsomething) but then open-sea acces is really good. The price quality for the 40/eur night was high, but the quality of goes down when the price goes to expensive. Something to improve is the music the hotel plays in the corrdidors till around 23h00 a clock, would be better to give earplugs if you have a room next to the corridor like us or improve this as hotel. Also, the training of the staff can be higher.

Stayed for a week, a couple in our early 50’s so this review is largely based on personal opinion.
The hotel is trying to attract the younger guest, that said, there were plenty of older guests. Our sea view room was large with a huge balcony however the many reviews regarding the dim lighting are true. We didn’t think this would bother us but it is annoying. Beds are huge and comfy but again as per other reviews the pillows are awful! Limited storage space, another couple of drawers would have been handy.
Bathroom is a little ‘tired’ and no where to hang anything or even put your shampoo in the shower just a small towel rail. We also noticed they don’t refill the shower gel.
Communal areas: the landings do resemble a prison like balcony and whilst this is just an area to walk to your room it’s just not aesthetically appealing.
The bar, restaurants were lovely clean comfortable and modern, although the breakfast area is again very dimly lit, coupled with the dark ceiling it made for a slightly oppressive atmosphere.
Pool area: plenty of loungers, never a problem to get one even if later in the day although this might have been helped by the weather not being great. The flooring around the pool is tired and broken in some areas.
The staff are always helpful and friendly.
Prices are the usual hotel inflated prices but that’s what we expected
Rooftop pool has a DJ at the weekend and definitely appeals to the very young.
No complaints with the food (we were half board) dine around was also an option with plenty of choice. Prawns were amazing.
We found the location perfect for us, despite the steep hill. Someone gave a top tip about the access behind the hotel which was great. Turn right out of reception then right again after about 40 meters. Walkway at the back of the hotel make the steep hill much less of an incline
It also leads to Casal da Penha restaurant which was well worth a visit.
Walk to the cable car takes about 20 minutes.
Despite the few negatives about this hotel, the food and location would probably attract us back.

New property with small limited facilities shoehorned in between larger properties. Very modern security on the lifts which wasn’t explained by the staff caused problems. Generally poor communication from Reception staff especially on arrival. Room wasn’t ready and we were given an alternative. While we waited for our room (some two hours), We were billed for our lunch despite being on full board because we couldn’t give a room number! The inexperienced staff were unable to deal with such issues, a theme that continued throughout our stay. Very limited menu in the restaurant and the constant jazz funk music throughout the hotel was like water torture.

We stayed in 701 which is and end suite with 2 small balconies facing the ocean and a sun terrace with sun loungers and a sofa and table. The terrace can't have sun umbrellas due to the danger of them being blown over the edge if it gets windy, so if you want some shade the pool is your best option. The pool has some great "beds" with comfy matresses - first come, first served, plus loads of loungers...and a good bar and restaurant!
