We visit this hotel regularly being members but on this occasion my daughter and I decided we wanted a break and felt that because we know the hotel and its staff well we would like to revisit.
We were extremely happy with our room, it was classed as a T1 sleeping four. It had two bathrooms, one with both a shower and huge bath, the other a spacious shower room. A kitchen with everything we needed including a dishwasher and a huge balcony. It was room no 1701
Our house keeping was run by Maria C. Rodriguis and she was an absolute star. Making swans out of towels and so many artistic things that we loved coming back to our room just to see what she had done. Everything was charged to the room making it not necessary to carry money around the hotel and there was an app on the TV to see what you had spent. There was also a very useful safe in the room. Bathrobes and slippers plus beautiful Guerlain toiletries in the bathrooms. The Bar staff were lovely, Natercio looked after us mostly and is a great asset to his team, the hotel reception staff very quick, friendly and efficient. Marta was the first person to greet us and got us off to a great start. I would wholehearted recommend this gorgeous seafront hotel if you want a lovely 5 star holiday but with everything at a reasonable price.

On booking this hotel I thought it was a bit pricey but it did not disappoint. On arrival a Manager showed us around the hotel and we were greeted with complementary water, Madeira wine and a basket of fruit when showed to our room. We stayed in a studio with a kitchenette and I can honestly say that it was the best equipped kitchen we have had in over 20 years.

The breakfast was just amazing. We have been lucky enough to go to some top hotels but breakfast has very often been a bit messy with queue's and tables not been cleared however we did not experience this once at the Royal Savoy as everyday we sat outside with the table being cleared promptly. The choice and quality again was probably the best we have ever had. It was a pleasure to go to breakfast and a great start to the day.

The hotel provides shampoo, conditioner, shower gel & body lotion.

There is a mini bar in your room but we could not find a price list for this but you can get this from reception. In the evening a turn down service is provided where you can get top up's on toiletries, tea, coffee & water.
There is an iron & ironing board provided and pool towels that can be changed as often as you like. it was about a 10-15 minute walk to the centre of Funchal and about 6 euro's for a taxi

Personally I rarely go back to the same hotel however I will be going back to the Royal Savoy and definitely recommend it . A fabulous stay!

My husband and I spent a week in Nov. at the Royal Savoy Resort. We were so pleased with all aspects of this hotel/resort that we decided to write a review. We had a suite on the third floor with a fully equipped kitchenette and a balcony with a most spectacular view of the ocean and the picturesque pool area. The room was spacious, super clean, the bed and pillows very comfortable. I loved the lighting in the room and bathroom. Bright enough to apply my makeup and get dressed in front of a long wall mirror. We were provided slippers and a robe and lots of towels and chocolates on our bed. It felt very homey and comfortable. The housekeeping staff should be acknowledged for keeping the halls, lounge areas and rooms in top shape. The grounds were well maintained from early morning to late night. As a guest you have access to abundant lounge chairs around two pool areas with comfortable pads and large beach towels. The ladies at the pool restaurant made me custom drinks and brought them to me. What more can you want or expect. We cannot say enough about the front desk staff. They went beyond their job description for us by helping to download and print our boarding passes, translating with locals on the phone for us, to answering my husbands unending questions about Madeira, to providing extra room keys, and calling for transportation to the airport. We were very comfortable approaching these helpful front desk staff, which at other resorts we avoid doing because they are not as responsive to our needs. At the Royal Savoy, they could not do enough for you. Trust us, they will try their very best to make your visit a happy, positive one. When my husband told them it was our 40th anniversary, they provided us with chilled champagne in our lovely spacious room. A special thank you to the customer relations manager and staff. We also enjoyed the nightly happy hour in the piano bar and of course the lovely sounds of piano music. They even have a library on the first floor where you can find books to enjoy. We wanted to experience the culture and foods of Madeira since we had a rental car so we did not stay and enjoy the first class food offered at the hotel but I know that they offer fine dining in a lovely restaurant overlooking the ocean and pool area. We will have fond memories of our stay at the Royal Savoy for years to come and cannot say enough about our stay. Thank you to all, and especially to whoever assigned our room for us. Christine and Zandy

The hotel setting is lovely. Right by the seashore with fabulous outside facilities. The staff are very friendly in general but the feeling as a first time visitor is that you are invading the property which is for the repeat visitor. Certainly the male staff seek to please the regular whilst neglecting the incomers.
The rooms are nice and comfortable albeit a bit tired and dated
The piano bar in the evening is reminiscent of the longe of a retirement home with old world entertainment.
The breakfast buffet is often tired. The hot food tepid, scrambled eggs looking aged and the bacon dry and stuck together. Needs vast improvement

Dear valued guest, Warm greetings from all of us here at the Royal Savoy Hotel & Resort in beautiful sunny Funchal! Thank you for kindly taking the time to share your feedback with the TripAdvisor’s audience. taxi booked through hotel didn't arrive at airport. only one bed made up, although had asked for 2. Bathrobes thin, one with a hole. Slippers one pair male size, though our booking said clearly 2 females. Ms Gouveia at desk very offhand, querying whether we'd actually ordered taxi, said office was closed would have to sort out in morning. Next day she said there was no email specifying those details. Luckily the following day when we had a copy of the email another very helpful girl was apologetic and refunded our excess fare.

bathroom counter top was dirty throughout the stay and with no discernible extraction system. Room and kitchen well-equipped. The glass dome over the entertainment lounge was just outside the door, so noisy at night.

Poor Wifi.

Trip could only be paid by cash.

Very unpleasant smell outside entrance door.

There were no obvious signs for stairs - an obvious safety hazard in case of fire or other emergency. After searching on a couple of floors, I asked at the office and was shown a door along a corridor, which had no sign and did not look like a stairway for the public.
I hope this has now been remedied and that other improvements have been carried out since our visit, which was a little before the date stated, as I have only just discovered this site.

Stayed February 22 the location was about a mile from the centre of Funchal.,
half way up a hill, so not suitable for everyone. Apparently, there is a shuttle into town, but we were not informed of this until we were leaving !

We had a junior suite on the fourth floor. It had a small kitchenette and lounge area and nice balcony with table, chairs and sunbed. The rooms 1-15 to the right have the sun on the balconies in the morning and 16-30 sun in the afternoon/evening.
Its a well established hotel with lots of older residents who have been visiting for many years. Entertainment wise, It’s very quiet with just a couple of piano players in the evening. Not a lot to do during the day apart from sunbathe. The sea is quite rough for swimming, due to the wind. But the main pool is heated. There is an indoor pool and small gym.

We didn’t eat in the hotel due to the high prices ( buffet for 2 inc wine was over 100 euros ) and there was a huge selection of restaurants within a short walk.
Case da Penha was excellent, but you have to book.

Beware, the information kiosk outside the hotel advertises very cheap prices for all the excursions, you could only select one and they were subject to you and your spouse having a 90 minute Time Share meeting.
Overall, very overpriced and underwhelming.

Dear Valued Guest suetaylorfashion, Warm greetings from the Royal Savoy Hotel & Resort in sunny Funchal! Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay with us, which we greatly appreciate. We are sorry to hear that we did not fulfill your expectations as our guest's satisfaction is our main priority. Regarding your comments, just to clarify, the Royal Savoy does not provide a shuttle service as we are extremely near to the town centre. The special buffet evenings are on Sundays and Mondays at the Armada Restaurant however, as an alternative we also have the Neptunus Restaurant with an à la carte menu. In terms of entertainment, together with our pianists, we also have a varied selection of singers and musicians throughout the week. We thank you for your preference and we hope to welcome you back in the near future. Muito obrigada! Luisa Correia Hotel Manager

As a Vacation Club member, I have stayed here on many occasions since 2011. The facilities suit my needs, and the location near Funchal's seafront is very convenient. The staff are very friendly and efficient from doormen, through reception to housekeeping, poolside and catering. Refurbishment in public areas could have been carried through to the room as it was clean but looking tired. As I prefer to self cater, the kitchenette is very well equipped for up to 4 people. It is nice and peaceful with lovely pools and gardens to relax in.

I have seen reviews that claim all rooms have a great view but that is not my experience. Room 1511 and I expect the three or four rooms around it have a view skimming across the roof of the of the lower part of the hotel, partly obscured by the scenic lift that is right beside it and with a tiny balcony. This is clearly a sub standard room which doesn’t even have privacy as the next room has a long balcony where people can look straight into your room.
The hotel management felt no urgency to move us to the standard of room we were shown when selling us four weeks in a T1 suite but eventually moved us after four days of pushing. This is not what I would expect of a hotel claiming to be five star.

Dear Valued Guest, World traveller796 Warm greetings from all of us at the Royal Savoy Hotel & Resort. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us via the TripAdvisor review channel. We regret to learn that the accommodation that you had booked via the Royal Seasons Winter Package was not to your liking. As you are well aware, the accommodation of this particular package is for a T1 suite - comprised of a one-bedroom apartment which includes also a separate living/dining area, two complete bathrooms plus a full kitchen – these criteria meet the contract specifications. As you know the location of the accommodation is not guaranteed. As soon we became aware of your dissatisfaction with the location of your suite, our front desk team did their utmost to accommodate your preference, which was only possible on the Friday after your arrival as we were in the process of renewing the carpets of the suite accommodation. Perhaps for a future visit, you could contact us directly, we are always happy to advise all inquiries of options and location of the accommodation to suit the preference and likes of our guests. We are aware that it is difficult to satisfy everyone’s preferences, nevertheless, the full team here, staff members and management alike, are totally committed to providing the highest level of service and facilities to meet the expectations of each and every guest, which in turn create positive long-lasting holiday memories for all who visit us. On behalf of the entire team, we wish you a continued enjoyable rest for the remaining days of your stay with us. Best regards and Muito Obrigada Luisa Correia Hotel Manager

We stay at the Royal Savoy as often as we can and I am disappointment to read the review listed before mine as a home for elderly people. We are not old and certainly do not like to be judged like this. There are many return guests as this is predominately a timeshare hotel and those that visit often take great comfort in the warmth and hospitality shown by the staff mainly, because they recognise us and we recognise them. It’s simply like returning home after an absence.
We enjoyed great service and super hospitality from the waiters to the reception staff, from the owners relations to the managers. Nothing is too much trouble and although sometimes things take a little time to happen, if there are things troubling the guests, they will try their best to help solve them.
Anyway the reason for my review.
We tried the buffet breakfast for the first time today and were very pleasantly surprised by the array of choices. We then added an afternoon tea to the many experiences we have not had here. My biggest regret was not taking photographs as this afternoon tea was epic. I cannot believe I haven’t done this before and more surprisingly I’m amazed more residents haven’t tried it. The food was hands down so much better than Reid’s at a fraction of the price and the only draw back was perhaps the setting wasn’t so opulent. There was a lady playing a harp and the most delightful waitress looking after us. I’m sure if this were advertised and opened to the guests in the other hotels or passing trade, this could be a real hit. We for certain will repeat both the breakfast service and the afternoon tea again.
In summary the hotel is for everyone and this week it has been wonderful to see young families and children in the pools on what has been the hottest two weeks we’ve ever had in Madeira. We cannot wait to return.

I knew it was a timeshare/vacation club before we booked with TUI, but that makes for regular and prompt attention from the excellent staff. Our Junior suite - large en-suite with seating area and small well equipped kitchen (including real teapot pot and kettle) was very clean and comfortable, kept that way through the day by the very professional cleaning staff. Evening entertainment was very good, suitable for older travellers, and importantly prices even at the Pool side bars were very reasonable, a change from the usual rip-off hotel prices. Loved being able to dive into the sea from the platforms provided, and the 2 outside salt swimming pools were both large and a decent depth.
Will certainly return, as do many others we spoke to. A little gem of a hotel, a short walk to the Port and town of Funchal.

We buy a bottle of gin, wine, or beer and have pre dinner drink on the room balcony. So I don’t know a lot about prices of alcohol. Two cafe lattes after eating out at a nearby restaurant back at the Savoy was about 8 Euros, A walk into Funchal is fine for me at 81. Not so sure in the heat of the day so go in the morning as this week it has been up to 30. There are numerous taxis in Funchal eg near the old market and along the sea front. Cost 6 euros this June plus small tip. The sofa bed so far has been fine and it’s double size. Don’t expect a Sandy beech, but the hotel has two outside pools and an indoor one. Walk into Funchal and there are boat trips, fishing trips. My son and grandchildren went scuba diving and kayaking. Not sure where but reception at Savoy will help. They will also get a taxi for you should you want one. Several good restaurants within 5-10 minutes walk, or go into the old town for plenty. There are island tours and levada walks of differing difficulty. Or just relax on the hotel loungers. Small supermarket just up the hill for most things Hope this helps.

Any bus (For example: Buses 1, 3 or 4) that leaves the town centre towards the west part of Funchal will stop in front of the Savoy Palace. Then a 5 minute walk down to the Royal Savoy.
