Location is fantastic with great views over Funchal, travel to Funchal has numerous options, cable car which is right next door. They run a shuttle bus to Funchal every day, and buses which run every few minutes just a short walk away. The gardens are lovely as are the tropical gardens right next door. The hotel is beautifully furnished colonial style with a nice cool swimming pool with a very basic gym. Having said that I was very disappointed with the break fasts. Not much variety if you wanted continental, if you wanted a cooked breakfast it was a buffet which was not nice at all invariably too cold, the chafing dishes were just not up to the job. Just kept the breakfast Luke warm, which just wasn't good enough. The evening meals we enjoyed but if you wanted a change there is a nice restaurant just around the corner called Babosas.…
The Pavilion Cafe in the gardens of the hotel has a lovely location but just admire the view and move on! We had the misfortune to decide on a lunchtime snack there. The salads were overpriced and unimaginative to say the least. Our supposedly litre bottle of still water which turned out to be 75cl arrived opened and when a query was put to the waiter he said that every bottle of water in the establishment had been opened to avoid difficulties! This is no way to run a 5 star hotel!
We returned from Madeira on 10th February. This hotel was peaceful, comfortable and welcoming. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The furnishing in the rooms were a little tired,in particular the carpet could do with replacing although most of the flooring in the public areas was wood and looked beautiful. The hotel is easily accessible by taxi,a very good local bus service or by cable car which is virtually in the garden. The gardens are also lovely and the pool is great
Stumbled on this hotel whilst wandering round trying to find somewhere to rest. It looked Colonial and a little upmarket and very pleasant surroundings, very peaceful. Even though the staff at the outside Tea Room had finished their shift they still insisted on serving us (10 of us) ! We sat, drank tea, beer, pop and ate ham and cheese toasties for a very reasonable price for such a palatial setting. Made our day to have found it, such pleasant friendly staff, would definitely recommend 👍
The worse afternoon tea we have ever had. We were going to go for afternoon tea at The Ritz in Funchal but after deciding to use our cable car tickets this afternoon we decided to have the advertised afternoon tea at the pavilion cafe in the grounds of the Quinta de Monte hotel. Oh how we wish we hadn't. You have the option of simple at 12.50 or full at 16.50 so we opted for full. Fair enough it was served on three tier cake stands but that was the only good bit. Three large sandwiches with the crust partially cut off (thank goodness) fillings ham and cheese, lettuce and cucumber and salmon. The white bread was hard, dry and seemed to be decidedly stale. You needed the very weak tea to soften it. Please tell your pastry chef that hard over baked cannon ball bread type things are not scones. These you could have played cricket with and would have broken the bat. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!! Two off cuts of plain and two offcuts of chocolate Madeira loaf cake should never have been on an afternoon tea. Another dry stale offering. Also it doesn't matter how much aerosol spray cream you give someone it is still horrible shaving foam that disappears on touch. PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY!! We have afternoon tea regularly at a well known Yorkshire establishment called Betty's which is silver service and top quality. If I could score '0' I would.…
