Quintinha Sao Joao is conveniently located a bit uphill from central Funchal but with the city center still in walking distance. As mentioned by fellow travellers, the main road V1 out of the city center is very near but if you have a room to the other side (nordwards), it's not really a disturbance. The historic building is very nice and in a lovely garden. It's thoughtfully decorated with lots of antiques and some of the communal spaces like the lobby or bar remend you more at a museum rather than a hotel. Rooms are spacious and come either without or for a small surcharge with balcony including a nice city view (from most of the rooms). The hotel opened in 1998 and is more or less unchanged since then with just soft renovations, so will be time for a more profound renovation especially of the rooms in a couple years. But if you are a fan of antiques you will certainly appreciate the overall ambiente and style. Very comfortable bed with egyptian cotton linen. Outstandingly friendly and helpful personnel - especially at the reception and in the restaurant - you really make a difference! Excellent restaurant which is especially great for dinner. Half board is of excellent value. I've eaten there on both nights of my stay and was always highly satisfied. If you like a classic restaurant with classic style and service, you will be a fan of it. There are in times of cost optimized travel and hotels not that many other places like this (especially since Hotel Hessischer Hof in Frankfurt went into bankruptcy due to the Covid situation). Many thanks - I really enjoyed my stay and will be very happy to return!…
Quintinha São João is a family run charming and classical hotel in Funchal. The rooms are surprisingly big, bedding is extremely comfortable. Balconies are surrounded by the tropical garden of the property. We did not use the outside pool nor the spa, but both looked very relaxing. Kids enjoyed the rooftop panoramic indoor pool and the games room. Gym was well equipped. Breakfast is full of local fresh products and there is a wide choice of à la carte eggs, pancakes and waffles. Ingredients were very good. Try the tropical fresh juice! We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, “A Morgadinha”. Definitely a hidden treasure with food from Goa, India (the founder of the hotel has as Indian ascendancy) but also local food. Extremely tasty, wonderful fish, excellent Portuguese mainland wines. Service is spotless. Staff is outstanding both at the restaurant, bar, cleaning and front desk. All very helpful and attentive. They helped us several times with programming our activities on the ground. Regarding covid: we felt quite safe. Don’t miss the flowers of Madeira. The garden and the common areas of the hotel are tastefully decorated with exquisite local flowers. “Quintinha” provides a true local experience, full of lovely details and an extremely comfortable stay. Hope to be back soon! Advices: 1. Rent a car: Quintinha is in Funchal, 10/15 minutes easy walk from the major attractions. But you will need a car to move around Funchal and the whole island. 2. bring some repellent (Previpic Tropics spray works well) :-).…
We have been to the Quinthina on many occasions and always find it along with the staff to be an oasis of calm, good service and friendliness. Yes there is a main road close by but with a pelican crossing into quiet streets and 6/7 minute walk downhill to the Casino & gardens which overlook the port. The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. Breakfast is table service because of the Covid 19 virus but is overwhelming with choice. I witnessed the dreadful & intimidating behaviour of who I presume was 408laurence in reception, shouting at the staff to see the manager. Neither he nor his partner wore face coverings in total disregard for the law, the staff & other guests. It is a shame that sites such as this and other social media allow personal rants. There are barking dogs in all European towns & cities, the hotel has no control over them. If you want to hear minor road noise then sit in the farthest part of the garden away from the pool !!!!!!!!!! We were rather unsure this year about travelling because of the virus, however the Quinthina made us very relaxed and we stayed on for another week. We just hope we will be able to return next year.…
The hotel was beautiful, rooms charming, staff incredibly attentive and served everything with a smile. The cocktails also are beautiful. The fact they have a games room too is super unique too, I had a lot of fun losing at table tennis and chess every night lol... The breakfast was better than an English breakfast. I was so surprised to know we have been doing it wrong. Restaurant and service was also flawless. So so impressed, and will absolutely be returning!
We booked a one week package with Jet2 holidays at this charming, family run hotel. We loved it so much, that we extended by one week. Quintinha Sao Joao (small farm house of St.John) is a boutique hotel which is an escape from the outside world. This piece of paradise is surrounded by lush gardens, an outdoor pool and a beautiful heated indoor pool. There are many secluded areas to lose yourself in quiet contemplation. The staff are warm, friendly and very helpful. The manager, Andre, takes an active interest in the hospitality offered to his guests. We will be returning here as soon as we are able to, as our stay here exceeded our expectations!
