Fantastic hotel, great location in the old town of Funchal. Staff were welcoming and courteous. Breakfast buffet good selection. Hotel is near to plenty of restaurants, cafes and bar. Two minutes from the cable car and buses/taxis.
We have stayed at other Porto Bay Hotels in Portugal and when we decided to go to Madeira our first decision was Porto Santa Maria. We stayed in a sea view suite and had half board. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The meals in the buffet restaurant were excellent and changed regularly. All staff were excellent and very helpful.
From the moment of arrival, to the last wave goodbye, this hotel is excellent. Not only in terms of the facilities, staff and cleanliness, but also in it's location. Our sea-view room was spacious, clean and offered the perfect view of the ocean and the marina / port allowing us to watch the cruise ships come and go. The hotel is right in the heart of the Old Town with restaurants and shops literally on the doorstep. The cable car is within a 5 minute walk and the marina within a 15-20 minute walk. Possibly not the cheapest hotel out there, but worth every penny and more based on our visit. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and ready to help arrange any trips. The pools were clean and well maintained and the restaurants well staffed offering a range of snacks and meals throughout the day. We will certainly be back!…
We booked a Jet2 holiday having chosen this hotel for it's location and it did not disappoint. It was quiet. The staff are friendly, the location for walking along the front perfect, it's handy for the cable car and buses and perfect for all the nearby restaurants. Evening entertainment that we saw was excellent. We booked B&B and the breakfast was great. We travelled as a couple with a friend and my brother and we had a wonderful time. The hotel could not have been better. Terrace and pools great. We didn't get up to the roof terrace - next time.
The location of the hotel was very good. first class service at all levels. Especially at the breakfast reception Mrs. Lina was absolutely super. She received everyone with a sunny smile and knew how to talk to customers in the right way. Her title should be Manager of the First Impression. You rarely get service like this anywhere. Breakfast and other restaurants offered good options. I am happy to recommend the hotel
Lovely stay Relaxing, easy, friendly Wonderful location for visiting Funchal. Heart of the old town. Near local bus terminals, cable car, boat trips and lots of restaurants, shopping… everything walkable Would go again
Overall we had an excellent stay, but felt very disappointed and annoyed when on arrival, we were refused food at 22.30, late due to a flight delay. We were told that if we were quick, we may find a shop open to get some food in the street. When I discussed this with a manager the next day, she suggested that I should have rung ahead to say I was going to be delayed. Something that is very difficult from an airport tarmac or at 35,000ft above sea level. I wrongly assumed a hotel of this reputation would have provided for such circumstances. It is clearly not company policy to accommodate exceptional eventualities.
Lovely Hotel, great location, near the Old Town with its host of places to eat and the bottom of the Funicular . The staff are great and the rooms delightful and well equipped. Our second visit, but it won't be the last. We cannot fault it!
Brilliant location - handy for cable car, buses, taxis and the huge selection of eateries in the old town. Hotel has a mature demographic of customer any provides for them beautifully. Immaculate grounds, good pool areas etc. A brilliant cost effective base for any Madeira visit.
This has to be one of the friendliest hotels going. We are used to the kind of service expected in the US and this tops even that. Whilst the hotel is four star, the facilities are very good and well maintained. The restaurant is managed well with an excellent breakfast. Special Gourmet evenings enliven the dinner offer during the week. Every evening there is music in the bar and an area for dancing. On occasions the musicians are exceptional, a feature of Madeira from the Island's investment in school's musicianship and the highly regarded conservatoire. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at the Portobay Santa Maria …. if you are lucky enough to get a room or suite at this very popular hotel situated adjacent to the many old town restaurants.
