A hotel with soul, just like a good wine. The Vine is sophisticated and luxurious. With a touch of simplicity and discretion, just the way you like it. A dip in the panoramic pool, a vino-therapy session in the spa or a gourmet dinner with a view over the city: these are just a few of the pleasures awaiting you at The Vine.

We were a bit unsure at first regarding The Vine and it being above a shopping centre but don’t let any of that put you off. We arrived outside by airport transfer and were shown inside by our driver. At reception you’re met by very friendly staff who after checking you in give you the card for your room. We had a suite on the 4th floor with a view over the town of Funchal. Each room has a different layout and ours was a large room with all the usual things you would expect with this level of hotel. My wife’s only criticism of the room was there were not enough hangers or closet space, yet I found plenty !!! The rooms have mood lighting or again my wife’s view was it was a bit dark. Electric window blinds made it much darker which prompted the every day question on waking “what time is it ?”. Bear in mind that you are in a city, it’s like a city break so yes there is some night time noise to contend with but that said is anywhere quiet these days ? Remember you’re not in a Yurt in the Lake District or in the rain Forrest which by now is possibly only half the size it was when I first started this review.
Breakfast is served either in your room or in the courtyard area and covers all the bases from full English to sawdust bird food for those wishing to not be on holiday and go to the gym every day which apparently is hidden in the basement area of the hotel so I’m led to believe. The roof bar and pool area is a great place to spend much of the day, the pool being heated and if that’s not enough there is an oversized full length (long and narrow) jacuzzi which you can spend some time in whilst looking at the hills behind the hotel. They have a wonderful invention called a cable car for that if you want to go and visit the botanical gardens after your continental cheese, ham and yoghurt breakfast. If you have opted for the half board basis then you will get to eat in The Uva restaurant which is also on the terrace roof. You will need a mobile phone to read the menu as it on a QR code although on a few nights they do have a specials menu which is presented to you before you order. HINT, you can mix and match the menus so a starter off the specials, a main off the QR and a desert of the specials, and any other variation you want, I’ll leave that up to you. The staff are well versed in what wines they have, where they are from (the wine not the staff) and what grape was used to make the wine. I suppose if pushed they could even get you the name of the person who trampled the grapes or grape to get the juice to make the wine etc. It is a nice place to sit and watch the sun go down before retiring to the roof bar area before you retire to bed.
The location of the hotel is just on the edge of the old town which means it’s not to much of a walk if you have had a substantial breakfast to go and visit the flower market or the fish market next door. It’s also well placed for the restaurants in the old town.
So the big question is, would we stay here again ? Yes of course we would, great price, great location, wonderfully attentive staff and they do a decent breakfast and dinner (tea).

My husband and I stayed at the hotel in August. Our check in was quick and room available early. The room itself was lovely and specious.

The hotel is located at the top of the shopping centre, close to the local restaurants and tourist spots. It makes it easy to just pop outside for a coffee or dessert.

Breakfast was lovely with a well organised buffet (masks were enforced and single use gloves were provided). It had a good selection of cooked breakfast, bread, hams, cheeses and fruit. Tables were available inside and outside and the service was prompt.

The hotel has a most wonderful roof top terrace with stunning views of the city, it is definitely a highlight of your stay.

The only reason why I gave the hotel 4 stars was because of a awkward arrangement for pool towels. You pick up your towel (one for the whole stay) from the reception (not roof top) and you have to pay a cash deposit of €5 per towel. Card payments are not accepted and you are not informed of this at check in. The second reason is the shower, each time we had a shower, water leaked into the bathroom area and made a pool in front of the sink and the bath.

Despite that, we had a lovely stay and would recommend the hotel to other travellers

Just came back from Madeira after spending 8 days at Hotel the vine.
As mentioned on different reviews, the hotel is located on top of “La Vie” shopping mall. Very easy access from the street and perfect location for city centre or discover the rest of the island. When you get to the lobby you feel a cosy and relaxing atmosphere. We were staying in a deluxe prestige room facing the city. The room was very spacious and very well arranged. Very big bathroom with separate areas for bath, shower & toilets. Desk with 2 chairs and a big bed surrounded by windows. All facilities are there from toiletries, sleepers, dressing gown.... to mini bar, safe etc... turn down service late afternoon. On the top of the building you will find the bar (happy hours), pool, jacuzzi & restaurant with a very beautiful panoramic view. You do have a spa which was not open du to Covid 19. Madeira is a beautiful place but you could easily stay at the Hotel the Vine and have a great time. Due to the pandemic things are working a different way. Breakfast (buffet) is really nice and the chef will serve you (social distancing) and everything else is available to order from your table (including hot) outdoor or indoor. Very nice indeed. Dinner at the restaurant UVA should not be missed. Michelin recommended place with excellent value for money. If you like a gourmet dinner this is the place to go. A full dinner with amuse bouche, 3 course meal & mignardises all beautifully presented is excellent value for money at €30/pers. All the staff there is very knowledgeable. The sommelier Leonel is on top of his game and knows everything about the 200 Portuguese wines on the wine list. The service is extremely attentive and Carmo & Martin (maitre D) were the icing on the cake. All staff from reception (Elsa, Laura), to bar, restaurant etc... were extremely polite and friendly. All together, Hotel the Vine is a first class place which I would recommend to anyone. Excellent value for money with a personal touch and a bit of luxury. Thanks for making our stay a memorable and definitely enjoyable one. Top place to stay if in Madeira!

Pros:
Location (centrally located in Funchal, but on top of a shopping centre)
Friendly staff
Good views from the roof top bar

Cons:
Does not give a comfortable and luxurious 5 star hotel feel; located on top of a shopping centre which can be handy for some things, but felt like a business/work serviced/concierged apartment rather than a nice fun family holiday hotel, doesn’t have a hotel lobby or a garden.

Only one outdoor pool and that too unheated; Impossible to swim after 4pm and this was June.

Very uncomfortable rooms, no bedside table, only one electric port at desk. The big wardrobe door on side of our bed kept opening and injured my son’s toes multiple times as he tried getting out of the bed, as it had sharp edges.

In 5 days stay, not a single day the bedsheets or towels were changed; same bedsheet was just nicely spread back on the bed and used towels were nicely folded back.

Breakfast quite limited for a 5-star, but I could get the eggs made as I wanted like I said Staff are generally very helpful.

Firstly let me say that the staff at the Vine are more than 5*, the facilities are probably when open also 5*
However Covid 19 has changed matters, which one has to accept. But Voyage Prive still advertise that it’s 5* A la Carte dining, when in reality you are offered 3 choices from a set menu for dinner. Breakfast is a “served” buffet which is limited and not 5*. The gym and Spa are both closed. There is building work right next door. Be aware Voyage Prive answer to complaints is that you should ring the Hotel 2 days before arrival to check what’s available. If you do so, will they let you cancel? And offer a refund, don’t think so. So my advice is this is a nice hotel, with great staff, but it is not in the presence times able to offer 5* facilities etc, so don’t pay Voyage Prive’ 5 * prices unless of course you wish be your own agent and ring the Hotel yourself to find out which facilities are available.

We have just returned from a fabulous week at The Vine. Our first holiday abroad since 2019 and the perfect opportunity to relax having got married last month.

On arrival, check in was very quick and we were delighted to receive a room upgrade and a bottle of fizz when we went up to our room. The room was perfect, the in room bath fabulous and the black out blinds perfect for those wanting a lazy morning after travelling.

We ate at the hotel restaurant in the evening twice during our stay (I recommend booking for the nights you wish to eat at the hotel on arrival as they get booked up quickly). The food was fantastic and the service equally as good, despite some staff telling us they were new to the restaurant, they couldn’t do enough for us. Breakfast was great too, with plenty of options (hot and cold), with options to have eggs (and other things) cooked to order, as well as a buffet style breakfast (with covid safety measures in place). The fresh fruit was also lovely.

The pool area is small but we were never without a sun bed and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The pool bar is great, and you can have drinks and food brought to you at your sun bed, or sit around the bar at the tables with umbrellas for shade.

We had spa treatments too, the facial and massage were lovely and the spa staff very attentive too.

Overall we cannot fault our stay at the vine, one of the best hotels we have stayed in and it really made our first experience of Madeira. I would recommend to anybody looking for a relaxing week away in the sunshine.

The Vine hotel is situated only minutes away from the harbour , the best restaurants and the main shopping area, so it’s well placed for a city break. The hotel is beautifully designed as are the room, we stopped in a junior suite, which was a large room, with a huge 2 person bath in the bedroom area, with a separate shower and toilet area. The staff are polite, professional, efficient and friendly. The breakfasts buffets ( cold and hot) contained everything we wanted, we also frequently ordered omelettes, which were perfectly cooked. We were on the second floor, the only downside and this was a very minor one for us, was the noise from the street, which started about 7am and went on to about 11pm. If you are sensitive to noises, I would pack some earplugs. Don’t let that put you off as this is an amazing hotel.

The hotel is in a mall so you can not drive all the way to the hotel where the reception is on the first floor.
Very noisy outside the hotel, both a lot of traffic early in the morning and a green stall with iron bars which are set up every morning by loud staff

Agreed price with 2 at the reception on arrival and got it in writing but at check out the hotel demanded 240 Euro more discussed with the manager for 15 - 20 minutes with a waiting airport transfer outside.

Very simple breakfast without variations and only back off bread that you usually buy at petrol stations and similar places, even if there was a fantastic bakery on the ground floor.

Very soft mattresses and a thin duvet in plastic.

Inadequate cleaning (same waste in the shower for a whole week)

The hotel lacks trained managers in both the reception and the restaurant as well as housekeeping

I decided too take a long weekend break to Madeira and chose the Vine (5*) Hotel for my stay

From start to finish my experience was second to none! It was simply outstanding

On arrival, I was gratefully upgraded to a Grand Deluxe room which was stunning

The attention to detail is simply awesome and its very apparent that the House-Keeping Team do a remarkable job in preparing rooms and keeping them updated during your stay

My meals were incredible and the in my view, given both the quality & presentation, not overly expensive either. I pass along my sincere thanks to the Chefs, so often the "unsung hero's" of a restaurant, for the amazing food that they produced

A huge call out to Victor on reception for kindly upgrading my room, for being so kind & friendly during my stay. Notwithstanding, his wonderful sense of humour. Many thanks Victor

Another call out for Marina (a member of the Waiting Team in the Restaurant). Marina has not been working at the Hotel very long, however given her attention to detail & kindness, you would have thought she has been there for your years!

Marina, thank you so much for making my meals with you such a lovely experience & please keep up your good work! You are a credit to the Restaurant Team there!

So would I return to this Vine Hotel? ........Absolutely I will, most likely with my wife next time so she too can experience a wonderful stay at this wonderful hotel

Please kindly pass along my sincere thanks to ALL the team there at the Hotel for making my stay so very special!

With my best wishes & thanks to you all

Kevin (Room 210)

To be absolutely honest I couldn’t say it’s a 5* hotel. For me It’s always the little things which you notice and they can add up. No refills of tea and sugar, light bulbs in need of replacing in the spa, layers of dust on a main decorative feature in the breakfast room. Just these little touches that are easy fixes could make it superb. The Hotel to me appears a little dated and in places tired. Let’s not detract from the fact though it’s staff are friendly helpful and can not do enough for you. They work tirelessly to ensure you are well catered for during your stay and are well informed.
The location. This is the big one. Funchal is a small town really but spread wide along the coast. The Hotel is smack bang in the centre of everything within easy 10-20 min stroll time of the old town, 5 min to the promenade/harbour and local parks.
We spent the majority of our time heading to the harbour and old town. It’s got vibe, street music, character, some great eats and this is where you find the cable car up to the hills - do this. €16 return of €11 one way to walk back down.
It’s been written before that the Hotel is atop a 3 tier shopping centre which has a supermarket and on the bottom level which is very handy set among various shops. There is a couple of restaurants literally on your doorstep. An Italian which was ok and a great little place called Coachella just down the cobbled street opposite the main entrance.
We had a room facing the interior of the hotel and could not really see much, that said we didn’t spend much time there but if you want a room with a view I believe it was only the pricey top suit which offered this.
We didn’t use the rooftop more than once. The lattes were €4, although there is a happy hour 17.30-18.30.
The pool is warm, not heated and ok for a dip and a couple of lengths. The view is superb though over the city and harbour and you can see parts of the old Funchal merged with the new.
Breakfast always had decent variety but overcooked fried eggs. Free use of steam room, jacuzzi and has treatments available at above average spa prices.
All in it’s a great place to stay and I highly recommend it but 5* I thought not.
