My husband and I absolutely loved this beautiful hotel. Our room was comfortable and lovely. The common areas of the hotel were very special, including an outdoor courtyard, a beautifully furnished and decorated living room complete with a fully stocked bar, and a small museum! The hotel is located in the Alfama district, which is a great area to explore....

Delightful small hotel attached to the castle itself and accessed by extremely narrow cobbled streets that even fool the taxis at times. Would have preferred double bed instead of two put together and the bedroom was a little tight but very quaint and good en-suite. Excellent breakfast buffet and all day coffee and tea in lovely courtyard or lounge area....

Just returned from five nights here in Room 18, which was lovely and overlooking the courtyard. The hotel itself is really nice and the lounge area is the perfect place to unwind between the end of the day and dinner. The location is a bit of a pain in the neck. Cab drivers just don't know how to get here,...

Right next door to castle a really nicely modernised hotel, We Cannot fault anything. The staff were very nice and friendly. Very good breakfast. What more could you want from a hotel in a lovely city.

We loved our stay here. The room was lovely with a beautiful view of the river and had some nice amenities (robes, slippers and a bottle of Port wine), and we especially loved the patio/courtyard (complete with peacocks!). Not only did enjoy all of our breakfasts there, but we looked forward to retreating there in the afternoons for wine and...

Perfect choice for a place to stay in Lisbon. Excellent location, very helpful staff who went out of their way to provide help on places to eat, etc. atmospheric, being so close to the castle and very comfortable room. The breakfast was terrific.

It was a pleasant surprise. Driving up to the hotel, we had some reservations but once entering the large double doors it was a paradise in disguise. The service was awesome and the room was great. A beautiful place to stay. Away from the hustle and bustle of the main city. Wish all hotels were like this.

This is a beautiful hotel in a brilliant location. Looking at the reviews and the hotel website, the last thing you'd expect would be a very dark, rather damp-smelling basement room (Room 4). That, sadly, was what we were given when we arrived and the only alternative offered was an identical room next door. Or we could have moved the...

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for sharing your comments about your stay with us. We are pleased to know that you enjoyed our location inside the Castle outer walls. The room 4 is not in the basement but at street level - above ground level. Like other houses in the same street (Rua do Espirito Santo), many locals live...

Stayed in Solar do Castelo for a week with my sister and very much enjoyed our stay. We had a great room overlooking the courtyard on the 1st floor. The hotel is located inside the Sao Jorge castle on top of a hill in the Alfama district, the streets were cobbled and very narrow, so our trip included a lot...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
