What a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city. Staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. View from our balcony was over the secluded courtyard and the castle grounds. Breakfast was varied for all tastes. An honesty bar in the lounge. Decor modern and traditional at the same time. Easy access to everything in the city....

Nestled in the castle walls, Solar Do Castelo was an ideal base for a city break in Lisbon - you are sight seeing from the moment you wake up! All the staff were extremely helpful (24 hour room service), and those on reception spoke fluent French, Spanish and English as well as Portugese. There is a nicely furnished, spacious communal...

A wonderful location, next to the castle and the surrounding community. It appeared to be located in one of the better areas of Lisbon and the hotel itself was wonderful, small and personal, rather corporate. A beautiful courtyard, lounge and very comfortable bedrooms, all contributed to a relaxing stay.

The hotel is deceptive and sits quietly in one of the narrow streets behind the castle. Once you open the blue door a small courtyard and friendly welcome awaits. The reception staff were excellent and did everything possible to ensure we had a great stay. In the lounge coffee is always available along with fruit and other nibbles. Our room...

our taxi driver was frustrated because he couldn't find the hotel and had to ask for help several times! Once found never forgotten, however. Perched right up beside the castle it's luxuries are hidden away behind an unpretentious wooden door. The room itself was comfortably furnished and looked right over the castle wall, a wall which was home to some...

Great location, fantastic staff who spoke near fluent english and a really cool hotel. The breakfast was wonderful and the staff tips on site-seeing and getting around were spot-on. They even complimented us with wine for our 25th wedding anniversary.

The shared living spaces were nice, and our room was comfortable, but the room was nothing special or romantic about it. It was very plain, and not as nice as the pictures led me to expect. The location is neat, but it can be difficult to get to the hotel, as many taxis refuse to drive up in the castle...

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback. We are disappointed to read that your expectations were not fully met. Our rooms are all individually decorated with custom-made furniture. There are variations in furniture, layout, patterns, colors among the rooms but all of them were specially decorated with the medieval atmosphere in mind. The Solar Do...

We have just stayed here for 3 nights. We wished it had been longer. This was not our first visit to Lisbon but our first to this hotel, and it will be our choice when we return. All the people who looked after us made us feel so welcome. Our room overlooked the courtyard with a small balcony, it had...

Stopped off in Lisbon for a brief visit at the start of our holiday. Solar was an oasis of calm nestled in the walls of the Castelo at end of narrow winding cobbled streets. Excellent staff and service with nothing to much trouble. Restaurants nearby for meals in the evening and centre of Lisbon pleasant walk or bus ride down....

Our first day in Portugal we were welcomed at this beautiful hotel high above the city by friendly staff and told there is free tea and coffee and a pastry available at any time. This was the only hotel that offered this, also bathrobe and slippers provided without asking. Visit to the castle next door made ideal half day before...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

“Our room overlooked the courtyard and the peacocks from the castle often flew in and at night a fire pit was lit which was great to sit beside. We were on a 'Romantic Lisbon' package with Expedia and that included in our room. The bed was very big and the bathroom toiletries were Molton Brown which I think says it all about the quality of the hotel.”
