We requested a room on the plaza side of hotel, probably costs a bit more, but there is so much activity. It is great to watch. Some rooms have small balconies. Location is great - right in the center of the city, easy access to metro and Bairro Alto. The hotel needs an upgrade. We were told by the very...

My wife and I stayed here 5 nights in March, and enjoyed staying at this hotel. We had a comfortable room overlooking the Square, but got a good nights sleep. If you want a bland featureless hotel that could be anywhere from Oslo to Madrid - go elsewhere. The location was first rate and the breakfast was excellent. The airport...

There were many things in my room that were broken and the room generally was dirty and damaged (e.g., the walls and doors). This was a supposedly up-market hotel that was quite expensive, more than I would normally pay. For the 4 nights, I paid between $200 and $300 per night for a total of $930. Insane. For example, in...

Friendly staff, pretty tiles in the bathroom, and a great location to everything, but that is where the good review stops. The rooms needs a serious upgrade. There are a few outstanding pieces of furniture that with some love, could be stunning. The rest of the room is just not good. The beds have like a plastic cover before the...

The hotel was close to transportation, restaurants, shopping, and historic area. The staff was very helpful. Rita was great, we took a tour to Porto with her husband and it was wonderful. The breakfast was very good. The room and bath are good size. We had a balcony to look out on the square which was neat. The negatives ,...

And virtually no wifi in the room, even though advertised with such. Good connection in the lobby but not very convenient. Stair carpeting in shreds; chairs in lobby lost their padding years ago so you basically sit on the frames. The hotel advertises complete remodel in 1993. I think that was the last time any money was spent. Having said...

This hotel is a gem. And it has a great position, being right in the action on Rossio square. We stayed in a castle view room overlooking the square, and the view is fabulous, but stay on the third floor or above or the trees spoil the view. Excellent breakfast, even scrambled egg provided, a rarity in Europe. All the...

It's great being right on the square near Rossio, couldn't fault it, however whilst I had a room on the square side, there is no double-glazing so its noisy 24 x 7. It strikes me as a hotel being run by someone who is tight on budget, and as long as it is functional does not think changes are required....

1. Reservation sites should check these hotels carefully regarding the star rating. It claims to be a 3 star but is a European 2.5 star and a US 2 star. 2. As expected in Europe, room and BR were tiny. No more than 2 can move in the room. 3. Mattresses were lumpy, quite bad. 4. We were in the...

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
