Pensao Royal was exactly what we were looking for - a value for money, central, clean place to rest our heads after busy days in Lisbon. However, it is so much more than that! With Paula, it was like staying with a friend - she made us feel very much at home and gave great advice on restaurants, things to...

Arrived before the scheduled check in time but that was no problem. This is a very centrally located place to stay. The host Paula is a workaholic devoted to her guests. There is an interesting mix of people staying here because she has rooms with private facilities and also share bathroom. The start of every day she prepares a great...

We stayed at Royal for 2 nights and enjoyed the owners excellent hospitality and help. They helped us with car rental, gave excellent tips on Lisboa (restaurants, trams, beach...) On our last night they did not have room for us, but were really helpful still when we were staying at the Galicia on floor up from Royal.

This hostel is on the same street as Baixa/Chiado metro stop, few metres walk. 5mins walk up the hill is Barrio Alto. Easy wander home! Also easy to wander into Alfama to the east. Tram 28 stop is at bottom of road. Rooms are good. As would expect for hostel. Breakfast excellent. Huge number of portugeuse cakes and pastries. Very...

Excellent breakfast, fresh fruit salad, fresh juice, fresh coffee, meats, cheese, eggs, and a huge array of HOME MADE cakes! The chocolate one is a must. 100 metres to nearest metro for easy transfer...

Delighted with our selection of Pensao Royal for 3 days in Lisbon. Location is perfect as it is near metro station and bus/tram stops and within walking distance of all key areas. It is on 3rd floor and entrance is a bit difficult to spot but rooms are comfortable, very clean and have loads of character. Breakfast is by far...

Having read the TrAd reviews, my wife and I booked online for the first 3 nights of our Valentine's celebration, on our first visit to Lisbon. When we arrived, Paula (the lively and friendly owner) had decorated the breakfast room in a romantic style for the occasion - as I believe she does for all seasonal events, judging by the...

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights on Pensão Royal and enjoyed it. Our room was small but functional, with window, good ventilation and lighting. The bed was good and the bathroom was very clean. Paula was very friendly and gave us great tips on how to make up Lisbon! The breakfast was wonderful! Returning to Lisbon, we will...

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
