One of the highlights of our recent trip to Amsterdam was staying at the "Happy Sleeper" and the evening dinner and conversation with the Xaviera Hollander and her husband Philip.

The accommodations were superb! We stayed in the newly renovated "Luxury Loft" on the second floor. This is an old, grand house, so the stairs were kind of steep going up to the loft, so you should take that into consideration. However, once in the Loft, the beautiful sleek bathroom with its walk-in shower for 2 was especially romantic. We also loved the fully equipped kitchen and fridge (done up in Xaviera's trademark red), which was useful for preparing small meals when we didn't want to go out. The view from the loft overlooking the garden was very peaceful, and the skylights not only gave us extra ventilation, but made the loft very bright and sunny. The huge queen sized bed was really comfortable and made us want to stay in bed rather than going out sightseeing.

In the morning, the cooked breakfasts were delicious and very well presented. From warm whole grain breads, eggs any style, ham, local preserves, juices and good coffee, it was always a great nutritious and filling way to start your day.

The location of the "Happy Sleeper" is excellent – just a couple of tram/train stops from Schiphol Airport, and a longish-walk (long-ish for us Americans unused to walking) to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum (make sure to get the Museumkaart for unlimited museum admissions), and the great shopping along Beethovenstraat. Also, a couple of blocks away there are 2 major tram lines that take you past the museums and to Central Station in a matter of 10-15 minutes. Very convenient. (We opted to buy the unlimited travel GVB chip cards, and took the trams & buses all over Amsterdam.)

On the second night we had a delicious dinner at their place. Our compliments to Philip for being such a great chef! The after-dinner conversation and stories Ms. Hollander told were absolutely delightful – it was like having our own personal "One Woman Show" right there in their living room. Ms. Hollander is a wonderful and amazing woman, and we're so glad to have met her and spent a little time with her. She is a true historical treasure. She has lived such a full, exciting and adventurous life, and it's all due to her intelligence and quick wit. Again, this was the highlight of our visit.

Staying here was more for the experience rather than just mundane accommodations. Overall, a little pricey, but definitely worth it. Instead, we could have stayd at a cold impersonal hotel/motel or other B&B and not have experienced the richness and warmth that we enjoyed at the Happy Sleeper. We hope to come back again and again in the future!

Five of us stayed in the 5 beds-room for three nights. This b&b is easy to find and the living environment is generally good. Xaviera & Philip are very nice hosts and we had a warm stay in their house.

Staying in Xaviera and Phillip's was very pleasant.
I felt very welcomed and looked after while staying there.
In contrast to the busy streets of Amsterdam center, this place is located at Amsterdam south and it's very quiet and it's only a short walk to the Museumplein.

I highly recommend Xaviera and Phillip's B&B.

Me and my friend paid 285 euros for 2 nights to stay at this apartment. When we turned up there we were sent to stay with her friend who is about 80 years old. Technically we rented a room from a 3 bedroom apartment. We paid for breakfast and was given 1 slice of ham and 1 slice of cheese and then said hurry up and butter your bread. Me and my friend was so disappointed but thank fully Amsterdam was still the bollocks as usual. I'm so lucky I didnt take my wife there cause I would be divorced by now. Beware be very aware but would be a good prank for Aprils fools day. Rip xavier Hollander u robbing scumbag.

We booked and paid for a 2 bedroom smoking apartment via another website (Wimdu) and what Xaveria (the lady who took the booking) neglected to tell us was that she was giving us ONE ROOM IN SOMEONE'S NONE SMOKING SHARED APARTMENT. The apartment owner lives in the apartment and confirmed she acts as an overflow for Xaveria! She was mortified when we explained what we had paid for and understood how disappointed we were, When we said we wouldn't sleep in the same bed, a mattress was put on a floor for one of us to sleep on and Xaviera thinks it appropriate to keep the £150 she charged me for this ridiculous situation (for one night)!! The apartment owner looked at the information on the Internet for her apartment and contacted Xaveria to remove her details immediately. Needless to say we had to source alternative suitable accomodation and I would NEVER EVER use this lady again!!!

Seemed ok on arrival but soon descended into the night from hell! We had the chalet in the garden which seemed nice at first, arrived in evening so didnt get to see much of outside.
We put our bags down in the room and had a cuppa before going out, when we arrived back in the middle of the night the chalet was on fire!!! No staff could be found or contacted, there were no fire extinguishers or fire alarms. Whilst trying to get help or find a fire extinguisher we saw cats on the worktops in the kitchen! Very unhygenic, in the morning when we went to see the damage it was quite apparent that the cause was a seriously overloaded extension, 6 plugs in 1 socket! Not only this but we also saw dog mess in the garden and the house was generally a mess. Unless your a fan of Xaviera's and/or you dont value your life then I'd stay well away.

My newly wed wife and I stayed at Xaviera's and discovered an extremely disorganized utterly repulsive home. The filth of the home was an outcry to any persons standards. I walked to the bathroom in the morning and discovered dog feces on the way to the bathroom. She would not let us cancel our last two nights, so we booked another hotel in the city center and our experience of the wonderful city changed for the better. I recommend this to no one!!

I booked two nights at this B&B mainly because tripadvisor tags it as free parking.
Well- IT IS NOT !!! They charge 30 Euro per day !
More important- When I arrived they informed me that they accept only cash. I did not have any, and they instructed me to the nearest cash machine. Quote from their email following correspondence with them later
"Jews and italians almost always carry kessef or real mesomme (cash) in their pockets with the difference that Jews always want reductions and Italians never bargain"
Watch out for that trick !!
(Later they claimed that if I insisted they would allow Visa, but this is not true)

Hi
I spent the night of 5.7.2013 in their house with my girlfriend
Was a terrible experience:
- we got a room where there was even no space to put a suitcase. So we would take turns on the bed to open and close suitcases while the other one would step out in the corridor.
For Eur 100!
- pics of bathroom shared with 1 other family enclosed. Smallest sink I have ever seen
- room is,quite rundown

And the best.... after me complaining, and after Mrs Xaviera and her husband had tried many times to ask personal questions about our couple which I eluded ( wasnt their business)...
Xaviera told my girlfriend the next morning she should leave me due to my age!!
I know unbelievable but true ( she answered they better mind their business)

Nonono!

The photos of the B n B shown in advertising are completely misleading. We had booked for 8 nights, but left after one night. The house is completely disheveled, run down and untidy. There is no en suite, only a shared bathroom and the owner's clutter is everywhere throughout the house . There were used towels on the back of the door of our room, from the previous occupants one must presume. The house smelt of dogs, cobwebs were everywhere and the place badly needed painting. There was a very ancient television in a wardrobe in our room. There was no clear surface in our room to place any of our belongings. The owner was away when we arrived and the people who greeted us were very welcoming but we were astonished that anyone would expect international visitors to pay for such a low standard of accommodation. The room had not been vacuumed. There was no room to open our bags unless we did so inside the wardrobe. A dreadful experience. Stay away,
