Yes, the location was great, but being that close to the Red Light district also means that it can be pretty loud at night. The hostel was quite cheap and comes with free breakfast. The facility was ok and I do like the garden.

I would definitely recommend you this hostel if you're travelling alone. I took the 2 bed female room, the room is basic but clean and quiet and the bed was comfy. The common bathroom is very clean. Actually, the whole hostel is very well kept! The staff is very nice and helpful if you have any questions, and I enjoyed...

It turned out that my worries were totally unnecessary. Shelter city is perfectly safe for anyone and the staffs were really helpful. Breakfast is good too especially...

I was there with a friend, and as we are christians we loved and appreciated this hostel very much! Furthermore it's not that expensive, it's near to the central station and the center of the city. The staff is very friendly and open-hearted! :)

I really enjoyed my stay at shelter city. We were a group of four and managed to get a four bunk ensuite room to ourselves! The hotel was excellent value, came with breakfast as well as lockers. The rooms were clean and functional, but no more. Would recommend to anyone looking for cheap accommodation. However, it's worth noting this is...

Hostels are meant to be special, and this one opened my eyes yet again. It is founded with the mission of being a "shelter" in the red light district, run by Christians from all over the world. I met great people here and not only had the usual backpacker chats, but also lots of chatting on spiritual and faith matters....

This was my first time staying in a hostel and as I was traveling alone, I was quite worried. However it was a great experience. The hostel staff were all friendly and I was in a room with some great people. I stayed in a room with 4 beds however only 3 were used. The room was clean and had...

I was aware that this hostel was Christian orientated, which made me slightly apprehensive. I decided to go anyway and was pleasantly surprised. Upon arrival Holly checked me in and was very friendly and welcoming, sharing a little about the staff of Shelter City and their beliefs. One is kindly invited to join the Christian activities if you so wish,...

Due to a booking error we only could stay there for a night although we would have loved to stay for longer. The staff was super friendly and helped us out whenever they could. The free dinner and city tour were also absolutely great. Other than that the building was really big and spacey (which you probably won't find anywhere...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
