The hostel is in a central position (400 mt from Dam Square) and in the famous red light district. The place was cheap compared to the cleaning, the rooms and the position. The staff was friendly and the thing it really miss is a large common area (there is only the entrance hall, where they served the breakfast). I moved...

Stayed here for one night in March, only positive things to say. Clean room and bed, towel, and decent breakfast (free through booking at hostelbookers.com). Great location and friendly staff; building is a tad shabby. Recommended.

My partner and I stayed at Heart of Amsterdam for a total of four days in February of 2011. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay here, however it should be stressed that we were in no way seeking the highest of quality in our accommodation. Whilst the location can't be beaten for access to Amsterdam's infamous Red Light District,...

AVOID THIS HOSTEL. I've stayed in a lot of hostels, don't have tremendously high standards and am not a prude, but this was horrible. Heart of Amsterdam? I think they need an anatomy lesson. I reckon they might have meant Armpit. The first problem was the bathrooms - the showers have been squeezed in behind the toilets so you have...

Booked this hostel for 3 nights, wanted to stay here due to it being very central and within walking distance to most attractions, i.e. anne frank and van goghs museum. My friend and I (22 and 23yrs old both girls) were not sure what to expect of this hostel as there was mixed reviews on here. I myself have never...

Me and my two mates came to amsterdam to enjoy queensday, we we're all excited about the trip. that is until we got to our hotel, when we first walked in the only thing i coud think of was this place is somewhere you'd film a low budget scarface styled porno, everything was black, with some gold paint on it,...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
