The room and the rest of the hotel were spotless and regular disinfection of surfaces took place. My only small gripe was having to have my first bath in 20 years. I've become used to a walk-in shower but my wife loved having the large cast iron bath with shower attachment! We chose the hotel for its location just 2 miles from Pembroke Castle and on the bus route from Tenby to Pembroke and heyond.
Pub/restaurant was packed on our arrival but managed to get some dinner at the end. Food was lovely.
Breakfast itself was good but service was lacking. The acute shortage of experienced staff was too obvious. Table was laid for one person when 2 people sat there. Had to ask more than once for all the right cutleries and for cups. The other couple just helped themselves by taking cutlery sets from other table at the end.
Would try somewhere else to stay next time.

Avoid at all costs:
The photos do not resemble the reality!!
Well, where do I start, this has been one of the worst experiences of staying in hotels, we only booked the day before our stay through booking .com unfortunately.
After arriving all seemed ok, until we were told we could not leave via any of the roads surrounding the hotel the following day until 1.30pm and also the Sunday All roads were close due to a 100 mile bike race apparently There was nothing mentioned anywhere online about the Tenby bike race.
We were told we must book breakfast with Josh, cooked £10.50 and cold breakfast was £5.50 this was attempted 4/5 times before we could find anyone, and the Josh did nothing but make ridiculous comments! We booked breakfast which was served from 8.- 10.30
The room was on the ground floor and very dowdy, but the worst was to come!!
The blinds did not cover the side bay windows completely- no curtains.. The bed kept us awake most of the night every time one of us moved it was like a thunderstorm, god knows what was under the mattress. Also you had to flush the toilet 2-3 times because the flush had no substance to clear anything. We had to put the kettle on the floor to plug it in, as there was no plug near it. Then we spotted the thick dust on the bottom of the chair it was awful. The tv was put on the back of a desk that could not have been seen from the chairs or the bed! There was no extra blankets and it was quite cold for June.
We decided to go for breakfast at 9.30am. The dining room had one other couple in there. The so called owner/manager Josh from reception went into the kitchen to cook an egg the girl cleaning then came in to serve us, no hand washing!! while Josh was cooking the egg we overheard, we were the last two!
After the most disgusting breakfast it must have been cooked since he got up at 5am as he told us as we passed through reception. It was so dried up and cold, we should have sent it back but no one was in the dining room, all cups had been cleared away from the machine, so we had to ask Josh who was sat at the other end of the room for cups to have a drink, so after all that, we complained and also under the circumstances we asked for a refund for the second night as it was clear this was not going well. Anyway he refused saying it would have to be 48 hours notice. He just said” had you booked by phone, then would have told you about the race and road closures” Getting nowhere with his obnoxious attitude. We just decided to walk round the village and head for Manorbier for something to do. We asked a lovely lady walking her dog the best route, it was clear that wasn’t an option as no foot path and thousands of bikes at high speed on the roads and she suggested we took the train to Tenby, so we did and made the best of a bad situation. And we had to leave before 5.30am on Sunday before the roads were closed again.
I was in room 2 for a special two night treat, I couldnt be more disappointed after paying £140 for each night. I have not had response from my email to the manager.
I could see all the registration details of the previous guest when I went to log in, and mine were still visible when I went back to get towels 30 mins later!
I had to ask for towels. • There were a lot of hairs on the bathroom floor. The bathroom fan wasn’t working. There was a lot of mould in the shower, on the tiles on the sealant at the bottom, and on the ceiling above the shower. The shower hose was filthy. I would be appalled if my shower at home was in this state. There’s nowhere to put your soap etc in the shower. There’s a sticker on the shower that should have come off after installation – just shoddy. The toilet needs to be flushed twice to get a full flush. The hand towel holder came off when I put my towel in it.
There was no hairdryer as promised on the website.
The room is very dark and needs updating. It looks onto the front of the hotel where people can eat and drink. If you pull up the blinds you are very exposed. I couldnt close the window it was stuck. You have to put the kettle on the floor to plug it in. TheTV remote is melted and has been gaffa taped together.
Dinner for vegetarian- mediocre, curry or risotto, good job I like rice. Breakfast was ok but serving lemon wedge with scrambled eggs was hilarious.
As it has been taken over by new people, the decor has been changed. Everywhere looks cheap and tacky. To be honest, the whole place looks very run down. It was sad to see it in this state.
We paid extra for breakfast which didn’t look appetising at all. There was a help yourself to cereal etc section which was mostly all covered with cling film apart from the one thing that should have been. I fancied yoghurt but since it was just sitting there unchilled and uncovered in a large bowl I gave it a miss. We ordered toast which came out cold and dry. It had obviously been made hours earlier. The waitress was dressed in a tracksuit and kept wiping her nose on the collar of her jacket!
All in all, it was a very disappointing stay. Felt sad as it used to be a beautiful place to stay with character and always a warm welcome from the previous owner. Now it’s lost everything it used to have and is run by kids who haven’t got a clue! What a shame!
Firstly the pros:
At ~£65 per night including breakfast, Lamphey Hall overall offered good value for money when looking at some of the other nearby options. The breakfast was very pleasant with a nice choice of cooked to order dishes, nice coffee, choice of cereals and juices etc. The sliced ham was not from your usual ‘value’ pack but appeared to be freshly sliced and was not what I expected at this price.
The breakfast staff were also very pleasant and welcoming.
The bistro area / bar was nice and we had an evening meal for a largish group and it was pleasant. The decor in this area looks like it had recently been updated and the furniture, seating etc was clean and modern. The evening meal was overall nice as mentioned, but note the following suggestion about starters.
Reasonable on site parking.
Other observations:
We had a slight blip at checkin having been shown to a largish room at the front of the hotel, but there was a rather unpleasant smell in the room. We then found a ready meal in one of the cupboard draw’s dated from January that was rotting. Oops. Tye staff were apologetic and fortunately the hotel was not busy, so we were shown several other options and changed room.
As some other reviewers have commented, the bedrooms and bathrooms are in general need of a bit of a makeover and look tired around the edges, with our mattress pretty much past its best. The hot water in the shower also ran hot, then cold a bit, then hot etc.
We appreciate that this is an old building and it takes a lot of money to refurbish rooms and bathrooms etc and that at £65 a night, that is not likely to happen quickly due to the payback.
Just a further minor comment for consideration, when guests are sitting for breakfast, perhaps consider just holding off the drilling work in the kitchen at 830 am until guests are finished. Like many people, we do not like to be confrontational and be put in a position where we have to ask for work to be-stopped, but its these minor points that make the difference to a stay.
Several of us had the salt and pepper squid for starter at our evening meal and the price was the same as several of our local restaurants nearer to London. However the portion was rather lacklustre in comparison and we all thought overpriced. Perhaps reduce the price or increase the portion size a bit. The steaks were nice and cooked as ordered though.
The price was higher than we might have expected £185 reduced from £240
The room was fine, the shower room tiny , really tiny and shower cabinet inaccessible, and a trickle of a shower.
Unloved prepac breakfast.
Hard to recommend for accommodation but popular with diners.
We eat in the Hotel when we stay, each of our meals have been superb and plentiful, this is a real gem if you are in the area or wish to visit Pembrokeshire.
Our room was huge! with an excellent en-suite bathroom and a lovely view over the gardens. Bedding was of good quality and there were fluffy towels to use along with tea and coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits for us to enjoy.
We've family locally to Pembroke so visit often, usually staying in different places, but this is somewhere we have returned back to and will continue to do so.
