My husband and I are staying here now. It is absolutely not true that you can easily walk to Assisi from here. If you tried in the current temperature which is 40 degrees it would take you AGES and you would be severely dehydrated.
By car the drive is about 15 minutes .
It may take an hour or two to walk to the base of the hill where Assisi starts but then you are still nowhere near the centre which is a long way up hill .
Sorry to put a dampener on your holiday but in August I do not recommend walking. The castello is kind of in the middle of nowhere which is why it is so called... it was a fortress in medieval times to look out for enemies invading Assisi. You can see Assisi from the castello but it is a long way and no pedestrian paths.
Hire a car.

"The higher floor is quieter. The tiramisu is the best I have ever tasted. Remember castles don;t have lifts!"
