We arrived at the airport on a delayed flight from Sicily at midnight and found that there were no water taxis waiting and so caught the ferry and vaporetto to San toma. It was quite a stressful journey as my plan was to step into a water taxi and step off at the hotel door we had no clue as...

We had very high expectations of Oltre Il Giardino, having read the positive reviews left by others, and we weren't disappointed. We had a junior suite (the 'blue room') on the top floor and throughly enjoyed the space and the delightful view over the garden. The staff could not have been more helpful and the breakfasts, served outside under a...

You couldn't ask for a better base for your Venice trip. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, clean and modern; the hosts are very friendly and helpful; the breakfasts -- which are served outside in fine weather -- are modest but satisfying (i.e., lots of fruit and breads/pastries); the location is convenient; and it's really quiet.

A brilliant place to stay. This was our third trip to Venice but our first staying at Oltre Il Giardino and we would now not stay anywhere else in the future. Great room, with a lovely bathroom. Breakfast in the garden was a real treat and the choice and quality of food was excellent. All the staff were incredibly helpful...

Located on a quiet canal, near Frari, you will find an inconspicuous door, behind which lies a secret walled garden. This three-storey family-run hotel has only six rooms. They provide cheerful personalized hospitality service. The water taxi can take you directly to the front door of the hotel, or this is an easy five-minute walk from the San Toma vaporetto...

There are many places to stay in Venice from opulent 5 star hotels decked out in traditional Venetian to weird B&B’s. Oltre Il Giardino is thankfully none of these and is more akin to your own little villa. We felt at home the moment we stepped through the door. It’s small, which is what we like, with only a handful...

We stayed here for our honeymoon for ten days in September and we would recommend it whole-heartedly; staying here really made our honeymoon for us. Located away from the oppressively busy parts of Venice, with it's own walled garden and eight spacious, stylish rooms, il giardino is quiet and luxurious without being showy. The staff want you to get the...

What a perfect hideaway in Venice. We absolutely loved the hotel. There are only 8 rooms and the place feels so welcoming. We had a suite on the ground floor which overlooked the garden. The staff were simply fantastic, they were so helpful and always went out of their way to help. It rained the entire time we were in...

My husband and I stayed at this B&B in Sept 2007. We immediately loved the hotel as soon as we entered the front gate. You go through their garden and walk into the beautiful first level, where they have are couches and books (including area guide books) that you can borrow during your stay. We stayed in the grey room...

Staying in San Polo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The house, which once belonged to Alma Mahler, the composer's widow who lived there in the 1920's, lies next to a small canal just a stone’s throw from the Church of the Frari, has now been turned into an exclusive but homely retreat. This enchanting place in the hearth of Venice offers something unique to those visiting the city. Our guests will feel that they have really found a home away from home. ... more   less
