We chose the Schiavoni after much research, and we were very pleased with our choice. The room was immaculate; the bed comfortable; ample closet space; a mini-bar refrigerator that we used for our own soft drinks and wine (although it barely kept our wine cool-ish, certainly not chilled.) ; the bathroom also immaculate and well stocked with the soap, etc.,...

Our first trip to Venice. Was guided by TA to this little gem and not disappointed. We'd heard and read tales of cramped small hotels in Venice at expensive prices, which is perhaps to be expected. This was not one of those hotels. We had a second floor superior room overlooking the front and the canal. Very nicely decorated. Right...

Our party of 6 including 3 children aged 8, 8 and 5 stayed in one of the hotel's two bedroom apartments with kitchen and sitting room. This family run hotel is charming and overlooks one of the canals. The apartment was clean and spacious and extremely good value for Venice. It was within easy walking distance of St Mark's square....

We had the most difficult time finding Palazzo Schiavoni. More specific directions to the hotel would have been helpful, espcially if you are traipsing through bridges and numerous steps all over Venice lugging large pieces of luggage. Then again, we were in Venice, and getting lost is the best way to encounter it right? Once we found P Schiavoni, however,...

The hotel has a good location that is east of San Marco Plaza which is in a quiet part of Venice. However, with just 5 minutes walk you're back in the middle of everything. My room was on the ground floor beside lobby entry so there was some transit noise from those entering and leaving, however, not intolerably so. The...

From the moment we arrived and were warmly greeted and shown to our room, to the moment we left after they let us use the reception computer to check in for our flight, and looked after our luggage for the day, this was a definite first class hotel. We had an attic room with a panoramic view over venice towards...

The owner Nichola was very friendly and charming . Meeting us at the door and after formalities carrying our cases back down to show us to our room which was gorgeous -big dark old furniture with a desk and a sofa which we spent our first night in . Only to find the next morning that there was no hot...

We stayed in one of the apartments, which had two bedrooms and a pull-out couch. The place was immaculate, had a great kitchen, stocked with coffee, tea, milk, orange juice, butter, jam. Rolls were delivered every morning. Just to be clear, the breakfast that is provided to the normal hotel guests does not apply if you rent the apartment. We...

We treated ourselves to a private boat transfer from the airport to the hotel, but I would imagine first time visitors arriving by other means would find this little gem hard to find. However it's location tucked away in the quiet Castello district is half of it's appeal. Once we got our bearings & got lost a couple of times...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
