I liked the location...it was great to be further away from St. Marco, which on a previous visit I stayed near. It wasn't so far away by water boat. Romantic boat arrival at sunset. Fabulous garden outside to have breakfast. Complimentary proseco and fruit basket. Historic building with charm. Very kind staff. We wanted to visit the Jewish ghetto and...

If you want to avoid the crowds and the over-priced hotels around San Marco, if you appreciate an excellent breakfast in a quiet garden, if you love Venice but prefer to avoid the always overcrowded touristic highways, this is just a perfect location. It's our 'home' in Venice. Beautiful little gem, with the grandeur of the old Venetian palazzo's, combined...

Upon arrival at the Marco Polo airport, we collected our pre-booked 72 hours travel ticket outside the arrivals hall (look for a blue/pink machine). From the Arrivals Hall, then turn left and saw a trolley point with the sign to the docks. Walked about 5-7 minutes under shelter to find the Alilaguna ticket booth, then collect our pre-booked Blu line...

chose Palazzo Abadessa based in trip advisor reviews. Surprisingly, I do not agree and was disappointed. For first timers to Venice, I advise finding a hotel near Piazza de san marco or the rialto. This hotel is near ca d'oro, which is a bit of a walk to the sites in venice. Getting lost in Venice may be a charm,...

We are a couple in our twenties currently travelling around Europe. We could not be more happy about our stay at Palazzo Abadessa. To start, getting there is so easy. We understand many people arrive at the door opening onto the canal by water taxi, but we simply followed the clear directions that the hotel had provided to get us...

Stayed for 3 nights, room and front desk service was excellent, location is ideal, quiet and gorgeous garden, near to the grand canal. It would be nice to have had access to free tea and coffee making facilities other than at breakfast, especially at the price we were paying, though the free prosecco was a nice touch on arrival .

We spent two nights here recently and found it to be the nicest hotel that we stayed in during a two week Italian and Greek vacation. The place is the former embassy of the Austria-Hungarian empire. The second floor is really spectacular as the rooms all fan out from a former receiving hall with spectacular paintings, period furniture, wall and...

We traveled to Venice for a 2 night stopover as part of our honeymoon. This hotel was everything we wanted. It's in a fabulous location (close walking distance to main sights but away from the main drag and close to some absolute gems of restaurants and bars). It was very venetian in style and we had a view onto a...

We traveled to Venice in early June. The weather was fantastic and this hotel exceeded our expectations. It was right on the canal in a very quiet and peaceful neighborhood. There were four of us, including our two daughters, ages 12 and 13. We had a quad room and it was very large and looked out on the beautiful garden....

We wanted to stay in Venice and feel the historical sense of it so we decided to stay at Palazzo Abadessa and we wasn't disappointed. It's location is really good as it is within a walkable distance form Piazza di San Marcos, the train station and the Rialto Market, but what is more interesting is walking toward the norther streets...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
