Our room was the size of my walk in closet. I know that hotel rooms in Europe can be small, but this one was ridiculous. The bed was pushed up right against the wall, otherwise you would not have been able to get in the door. I can handle old world ambience, but when they have a folded up piece of...

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Hotel Castello. To be brutally honest apart from it's location there is very little to commend it. We had paid a total of £414.28 for our 2 night stay and our expectations of accommodation of a quality commensurate with cost of the room. However the reality...

Our experience at this hotel was positive in all aspects. The rooms were very small for two of us with bags but they were clean, as were the bathrooms. Breakfast in the AM every morning was minimal but service was good and we got off to a great start each of the four days we stayed here. Best part was...

Very good location but poor hotel. Avoid Room 105 if you can. It is small and very dark and badly in need of decoration to update it. The breakfast choice is not very good with processed meat and rubbery cheese slices with no taste. Tea and coffee not good either. The only saving grace is it's situated close to St...

We were so happy with the location of this hotel! 5 mins from St.Marks Basilica and San Marcos Piazza. The hotel is hidden and if you ask for a map, the hotel or the street name is not on the map. We had a store clerk near the shops help us. It looks like a scary area to be at...

Friendly and reliable service. Great staff. We felt like home. The breakfast is served in quiet and lovely atmosphere. Room cleaning is on daily basis. And don't forget there's a terrace upstairs if you want to relax or smoke.

We stayed here for two nights. It is two minutes walk away from San Marco square and about 5 minutes from the grand canal water bus stop at San Zacharia. The room was small, really clean and had a balcony to enjoy the quiet ambience. Breakfast was nice and the staff could not be more friendly. Great few days spent...

Just left this hotel after a 2 night stay with husband. The hotel is in a central location surrounded by bars and shops. Roughly 10 minute walk from water bus stop. The staff were pleasant and friendly. Had fridge in room with mini bar which was quite reasonably priced and was nice to take a drink out onto the roof...

Our room was small, but very quaint. The interior was a bit dated but everything worked as it should. The bathroom was very small but also very clean and had plenty of soap etc. Wi-Fi worked well. The location in old Venice was of course very good, but be aware that Castello is a 30-40 minutes walk from the train...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
